You're welcome. I personally prefer the old "Steam Gauge" cockpits but I know a lot of people like Glass Cockpit aircraft. Plus anyone who's interested in jumping up and flying bigger jets will need to learn about Glass Cockpits.

I'm kinda lost, my local airport has a VOR/DME and when I tune in the frequency it does recognize the VOR but I can't have a DME display. Same with the wind components display in the G1000. I'm back from FS2020 to FSX, am I missing something?

OBS stands for Obstructed. The OBS key is used to suspend and enable automatic sequencing of waypoints in a flight plan. Pressing the OBS key suspends waypoint sequencing, holds your currently active To waypoint as your navigation reference, and prevents the GPS from sequencing to the next waypoint. In other words, Before you get into a holding pattern, you press OBS so it doesn't go to the next phase. You press again when you are ready for the approach after the holding pattern, so it directs you the next step from there. Other than that, great video.

Samantha Lee, you rock. Most G1000 tutorials just say it does nothing and others might say its supposed to be for the OBS knob to adjust the CDI course outer ring (like conventional guage), but you nailed it. Nice work and very informative.

@@brianO175 respectfully Brian, Samantha Lee got it right. When you use it, it stays on your currently active and it won't sequence to your next way-point. Maybe they shouldn't have called it OBS as that certainly can be confusing.

The OBS button works like the G500.. It is used to suspend and allow aircraft to descend in hold pattern to get to assigned altitude.

you don't have to use knobs. You can use your own keyboard to type anything on the flight computers once the cursor is enabled

I think the OBS button puts your airplane at a hold-pattern around a waypoint at a certain distance around the waypoint or beacon, I have to confirm that though.

Anyone ever notice how beneath the indicated airspeed strip on the PFD, the TAS value is always the same as the groundspeed? I've figured out how to fix it though so that it shows true airspeed rather than ground speed. Any takers? It's actually quite easy.

The AP panel, did you add it to the virtual cockpit using shift + 2 or did you permanently put it there? If you put it there permanently can you tell us how did you do it?

It should be there by default. Shift + 2 will bring up a 2D version of the panel.

That's very strange, I have FSX: Steam Edition and to my knowledge, that is the same as FSX: Acceleration. I didn't have to make any changes to game files to get the panel there. If you do a google search, there may be a mod available which installs it.

I think this is the default Cessna 172. There are a couple of aircraft which come with a G1000 in FSX Steam Edition.

Have you set the airport as your final waypoint? I think that once you've done that, then you'll be able to select procedures for it.

Hi Doofer, thanks again for another very informative video, I am attempting to adapt your GPS tutorial, EGPD to EGPE, to the Garmin G1000, but keep coming up against a couple of problems? firstly the Cyan line indicating the GPS route disappears when I have set up the approach, and I seem to be flying past INS? also, ILS 05 Rwy comes up in the approach information on the MFD as ILS I05?, I wonder, if you ever get the time, if perhaps, you could prepare a video of this operation, I should perhaps mention I am flying the Carenado C172. but I'm sure the FSX glass cockpit would have the same MO. Hey Jim... I'll need to look into it. As far as I know, the G1000 should behave like the GPS500 once it's been programmed so I can't think off the top of my head why the flight path would be disappearing. I believe the Carenado G1000 system is programmed differently from the FSX version so that might be a reason but I don't have any Carenado products so I can't say for certain. I can answer why "ILS I05" is showing though. Normally that represents a way point on the ILS approach. So you're setup for an ILS Approach on runway 05, but what does that extra I mean? Well that represents the distance from the runway that the way point is placed. Instead of writing the distance with a number, a letter is used. In that example, I is the 9th letter of the alphabet so the way point will be placed 9 miles away from the runway. "ILS F05" would have a way point at 6nm away from the runway. "ILS D05" would be a way point 4nm from the runway... hope that makes sense :)

Hi Doofer, Having a bad day! the line, first of all is magenta not Cyan, secondly I think I activated the approach too early? I flew it again and and activated over the wpt and it followed the track perfectly, but, when I pressed the APR key on the A/P the plan veered off, so I need to work on that, but thanks for your reply? I'll try coming from the other way i.e using NAV radio.should I be canging to NAV 1as I approach?

Yep, I'm not sure about the Carenado planes but with the FSX default planes, the GPS doesn't give you any vertical guidance when flying on Autopilot. So you have to manually climb and descend along the flight path. So you can use the GPS to get to an airport but you'd have to switch over to NAV if you wanted to perform an ILS landing.

I can't remember if it's possible I'm afraid. I don't think so because I don't remember there being anywhere to enter the NDB frequencies, only VORs.

Move the mouse pointer to the button, tell what it is, then move the pointer to where the change occurs. Whipping the pointer in circles and running from one area to another with constant pointer makes it impossible for the viewer to concentrate on points you are making. If that is uncomfortable for you I am sorry. I was a teacher and used computer graphics for MANY years. Hope this helps. You give a lot of GOOD information.

In the regular C172SP you can switch to GPS Mode and the aircraft will follow the "pink line" Just like regular IFR Default flight. How you do it in G1000?

I can't quite remember because I'm actually not a fan of the G1000 system so I haven't flown any G1000 plane since making this video. I can't quite remember but I don't think there is a NAV/GPS Switch in this aircraft to switch between radio and GPS navigation. I'm almost certain that if that feature was available, I would have mentioned it in this video. I do know that if you setup a flight plan before starting a flight in this aircraft then just by enabling "Nav" on the Autopilot, then it'll follow the plan programmed which could either be GPS or VOR, but I don't remember there being a Master Switch I'm afraid.

I think you'd need to turn the plane off manually then save the flight with the plane powered off, then load that flight. If the plane is powered off, you can then go to the menu and move to a different airport and the plane will still be off.

It comes as standard with FSX Steam. I believe there were two DVD versions of FSX as well and this plane would have come as part of the more expensive version.

I have found your straightforward method of teaching to be a feature of your videos and have learned a lot from you. However, in learning about modern navigation methods this video is very important and needed to be properly researched and presented to show how the G100 works and how it can be used with a flight plan to depart, fly to and arrive both manually and automatically. In this video I expected better from you and suggest your admitted lack of preparation to be the problem. Sorry to carp but you can do a lot better than this.

+interdave999 Hi Dave, I can only apologise if this video didn't go into the level of depth you were expecting. I've had a lot going on away from KZbin which has taken time away from video preparation. That said, if people would like a detailed tutorial on working with a flight plan in the G1000 I can certainly look into it. My understanding is that the functionality of the MFD is very similar to the G500 GPS Unit which is why I reccommended that people watch that video as well to see what can and can't be done. Then have this video to demonstrate where to find various navigation options and show the difference in appearance between the G1000 v G500 GPS.
