Now we know how to control a plane, we begin looking at how to navigate using a very basic skill that most people will already have. We look at VFR Navigation and Pilotage, using what you can see outside of the plane to navigate.

Reaaly well done, watching these vfr videos makes me realise what i have missing out on.

One of my 1st flying jobs was flying a pipeline patrol route over a 3 state area. Avg alt was 300 agl and lower, 6-8 hr days. I use to land in fields and dirt roads to relieve myself or have lunch. Oddly my last job I flew 206 Jet Rangers doing same thing when I had a major disc failure I blame on all the sitting. In FSX and now P3d in over 20+ yrs of simming I rarely if ever use IFR charts, airways, approaches other than the occasional ATC guided ILS. My advice is to get rid of that gps, get you a local sectional, get your head out of the pit and out the window. Enjoy that $500+ scenery.

Go to Orbyx, get the Global base textures, $100, Vector, $80 then the landclass, $55. Thats the minimum required. Then start with say Pacific North West region $ forget. Then there are 20+ specific highly detailed airports at $20-$25 each. Oh yeah trees= $$$. I easy burned up $500. Thats just ONE region. If someone bought ALL their products and I have read many have, it is easily over $1500 if not more. Not including Active Sky, REX... Still have not added in the dozen payware planes. When I walked away from FSXyears ago it was well over 150 gigs and I guestimate I had thousands in addons accumulated from over the years. 3 pages worth just at simmarket.

Or you could buy X-Plane 11. The default scenery is way better than what P3D has to offer. Then you download W2XP - accurately placed autogen, VFR landmarks, UHD Mesh v3 and you have the exact same thing you get with Orbx´s Global, Vector and let´s say NA, except for you don´t spend around $220. And it´s actually way more accurate since that W2XP autogen can be used with photo scenery (which you can build for free, too). And guess what happens when you want to fly in South America or Europe ? You buy another regional scenery product from Orbx. Or you just load the sim and go flying since the X-Plane setup works pretty much anywhere in the world. I don´t even want to go into how bad the flight model is in P3D but you mentioned flying a helicopter. That´s a no-brainer. Alternatively, you can fly over default FSX/P3D terrain and lie to yourself it´s fun :)

@@davidtsw I disagree. The default XP 11 scenery is still the worst. Maybe better than FSX but worse than P3D. Even XP 10's default scenery is better.

dumb question but when you are using dead reconing would that not also be using IFR not VFR at that point

when I was an FSX noob, I set up a vfr flight plan from Manila to Los Angeles (across the Pacific) for the default 747. is vfr only necessary for short-to-medium distances?

Mio Akiyama 秋山澪 We've all been there! I remember flying a 737 manually for hours, not realising there was an Autopilot! VFR is more for recreational flying, so you're flying at lower altitudes, in good weather. You're flying for the fun of it, not because you're trying to get from A to B.

BOMBER CREWS IN WORLD WAR 2 USD VFR NAVIGATION, AND AS A CONSEQUENCE WERE EXTREMELY INACCURATE WHEN THEY DROPPED THEIR BOMBS. ACCURACY IMPROVED A LOT WHEN RADIO NAVIGATION INTRODUCED
