This is so incredibly helpful even for the mom of a 9 yr old T1D. His endo has recommended control IQ for us, however, I've been nervous allowing his pump to deliver a correction on its own. You have helped me to gain clarity and comfort with it. My son is incredibly active and I'm hoping as he matures that he will desire to care for his diabetes in a similar way that you do. Keep it up! Thanks for the review. I'm due to get my TSlim in a couple of weeks having had a pump since 2000 and that changing my life. I'm glad to hear someone has experimented with running in sleep mode as I'm 93% in range with a hba1c of 5.9-6.2% on average with my Dexcom G6 and Roche Spirit pump. That was my plan but didn't know how crazy that was.

Can't wait to try the t-slim. I've had type2 for 20 years and have never been in control. My Dr's just gave me a set number of units to give myself every day no matter what I ate. A1c has been 8-12. "I" suggested getting a pump to my Dr after seeing this video. Thank you.

I just ordered the t:slim X2 insulin pump about 2 hours ago and I'm pumped!!!! I've been using the 670g Medtronic system for about 2 years now and it's definitely not the answer. Quick note, in sleep mode it doesn't give correction bolus, but it will increase/decrease basal as usual. I recently started the tandemX2 with Control IQ, was doing manual injections before, and it has increased my time in range from about 60% to 84%! I love this device.

Hello Matt, This video was really informative. It sounds like you were on a pump then temporarily switched to MDI mode and then back to a pump. You might want to make sure your subscribers like myself are clear about this because after watching previous videos about your use of the MDI method of treatment you decided to switch again. That was kind of confusing. I just started on the Control IQ and agree with your comments about some of the less desirable features of it, but overall like you I really like the Control IQ. I look forward to viewing more videos from you about this system. You are a great communicator and I greatly appreciate your interest to help and support those of us who have been experiencing this condition for a while. I am 67 years old, was diagnosed almost 50 years ago and have no complications. The progress with treatment over the years has been amazing. Keep up the good work!

Good point about not getting complacent. That is the one good thing about having diabetes for 36 years. I know how to adjust my insulin and make decisions about that type of thing. Lots of people who haven’t had to do that may have a more difficult time if they are to reliant on it

Thank you. Was waiting for someone to review this new technology. I got distracted a couple times so I need to listen again but I don't thimk you mentioned once you get it on your pump you can not revert back to just basal so if you hate it you are stuck. Con number one is the reason I'm not getting it. Dexcom needs to send me sensors that work properly for the whole 10 days, transmitters too. They mess up. Absolutely love the G6 WHEN it works. Also, is Control IQ free just for this year. Got different answers when I called Tandem. Thanks again. I appreciate people who are willing to jump in first. I think I will wait a while.

I would assume taking small liquid glucose doses at various times. I keep my range in between 75 to 95 and all you need is to know your body and how much both glucose and exercise affects you. For me every 30 mins I will take 4ml of glucose and at the end I will take BG not SG to see where I am at. Rarely I drop below 65 or above 100. Also a low carb diet is the way to go. I don't show postpartdial spikes after meals.

From what I understand it doesn't do microboluses when you are in sleep mode, it just adjusts the basal. But if you are steady then I guess that shouldn't matter. So, it might be nice to be in regular mode around meal time. But after everything has settled down to be back in sleep mode.

I hate that alarms have the same sound. Medtronic had the beeps going up or down based on what is going on. I do love my watch, being able to glance at my watch instead of us clipping my pump.

Thank you for posting! I have noticed that Control IQ does not not give correction bolus if there is insulin on board. My day usually always has insulin on board. So Control IQ has not been very helpful for me, I have to do all of the correcting.

I have had Medtronic 670g and I just ordered the 770g. My A1C is 6.9 which is ok but I want get to a 6.5 or lower. I feel I take care of my diabetes pretty well but want a lower A1C. Do you recommend me keeping my 770g or should I try the Tslim 2x?

Any idea if I can change the blood sugar level at which my control IQ will release more insulin? I am not sure when the control IQ believes my blood sugar is high and then will release more insulin, but on occasion it has released more insulin/changed my basal rate and caused me to have a low blood sugar soon after.

How does this handle super long hikes or something like golf? I usually need to get my BS to 220+ as I crash like an hour or 2 in to that hike or golf. Does this help with that? Are there any hacks to help with these longer BS burning activities?

I’m on the MM 770 and that kind of control after 43 years I can’t imagine. You have it in sleep mode all the time whereas I think I’d be in exercise mode all the time for at least that buffer. You’re young; in time, lows become extremely unpleasant, less predictable, and dangerous.

I'm going to have to disagree on that one. Lows (when they happen) are definitely unpleasant for me, however, I've got many older clients that have had diabetes for 40, 50, even 60 years and they've been able to achieve the same stability through our program. Unfortunately, very few doctors exist that will show you how to do what we do though, so it's not your fault.. they just never taught you the right way (most likely). I can see where you're coming from though for sure

@@FTFWARRIOR your videos are very good, when I got diabetes was told I would live to about 35, just turned 81 with only minor retinopathy which treated with eyelea injections about 2 years ago other Than that no problems, my age is causing me more problems than my diabetes. 70 years , been type 1 since 1951 when the only testing was thrust a drs office and getting results 2-3 days later. Also boing needles and syringes to sterilize and sharping them with a sharpening stone. Especially when they get a hook on them. She is doing pens now and is thinking of getting t-slim X2 or Omnipod. Do you trust it enough to sleep through the whole night?

At the end of 2019 I had to choose, Omnipod or T:Slim, the no tubing feature of the pods won me over.... biggest mistake I ever made! I've been fighting with the insurance company to waive the 4 year wait for a new pump and finally, after a year, they've agreed and have shipped me out a new T:Slim. Why do I hate the pod so much that the word omni itself makes me cringe? Lend me your ear... or rather, your eyes in this case... I've had multiple instances of failed pods, the damn transmitter would beep for every little thing all the time, no way to know how much insulin is still in the pod until you hit 50 units, nor how much of a dose you have "on board", the adhesive leaves insane rash, the angle of the cannula along with the bulk of the pod makes it incredibly easy for the cannula to come out if you roll onto it in your sleep (many many occurrences of this happening to me, waking up with 400mg/dl glucose is not fun), you cant refill the pod if you find yourself in an emergency situation where you don't have any extra pods but you have a swimming pools worth of insulin, you're out of luck. Let me elaborate on this last one for a moment.... Not long ago I went in for an outpatient surgery, should have been in and out in a couple hours. Some small issues caused my doctor to hold me overnight for observation, during this hospital stay I had multiple spikes due to a number of reasons and had to correct with additional boluses. Around 1 am I had a spike with very little insulin left in the pod but enough to cover my basal rate until discharge from the hospital in the morning, having been T1 diabetic for the last 30 years of my life, I happen to know exactly how much insulin I need for a correction bolus, but the hospital wouldn't give me the proper correction bolus injection that I needed for whatever bullshit reason they have, arguing until almost 2am with them they finally agreed to give me a bottle of insulin so I can refill my pump and administer the correction bolus myself... if only life were so simple, unfortunately I had the omnipod which you cant remove to refill. So there I am, at 2 am pacing back and forth only hours after surgery, finally around 4 am I get my blood sugar to drop below 200 so I could go to sleep. If I had any other pump, I would have been able to refill the cartridge or reservoir and everything would have been fine. Oh, did I mention that they constantly fail and leak from the insertion site? Also, the pod ALWAYS has air bubbles in it, its annoying to fill, constant bruised and bloody insertion sites after removal, and to top off this short list of why Id rather get punched in the face than use an omnipod ever again, they don't work in tandem with the G6. Its garbage and its only claim to fame is that its tubeless.

Hi Matt, I started the tandem pump yesterday. With my Medtronic 530G i typically sat at the 90-110 range throughout the day, unless it was after a meal, which are typically low carb. Is there any way to jury rig this pump so that it allows me to run at that range, or will I have to live with the 112.5-160 range? Sleep mode? Increase basal? I am 5 years into diabetes, and am still considered in honeymoon. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Personally I use the sleep mode function to keep it in a tighter range, however it will not deliver correction boluses in sleep mode, only temp basals. I hope this helps!

Also, 2 questions. 1) as a type 1 diabetic that’s mostly low carb, should I be supplementing with vitamins and minerals? I don’t take any now. 2) I remember you made a video of changing your site and during that video you showed a bottle of electrolyte water that you said you would do a review on, but I can’t find it. Can you expand on that type of water? I’ve completely changed my approach on managing my diabetes and now I seem to be retaining a lot of water in my legs. Could you comment on Control IQ sleep mode function and how that might compare too or be used as replacement for BASIL IQ. I like the predictive suspend on low function and I would think that Control IQ sleep mode function would provide a better low BG control function and performance. Thoughts?

From my experience, sleep vs normal mode hasn't shown much of a difference when protecting from lows... however sleep mode is more aggressive with basal adjustments to keep you from going high

My 11-year-old son is selecting his first pump and thought he wanted the Omnipod because it has no tubing. He plays baseball and basketball year round and we like the features this offers - how would he use it during games? Unplug? Does that make it less effective in stopping his lows? That is what he struggles with the most in sports so far. Still just 5 months into this gig...also, he isn't thrilled about tubing aspect in middle school environment - will he still be able to play pick up games and appear "normal" to his peers?

"normal" is something that I struggled with A LOT in the beginning, but once I was able to accept that others opinions of me didn't matter, life got a lot easier. Now.. I know.. try telling that to a teenager. As far as the tubing, it's not too hard to tuck the tubing into shorts, I lead a pretty active life and 99% of the time its no big deal

@@jeffh4776 Glad to hear it. I'm using the Tandem VariSoft infusion set which is almost identical to the Medtronic Minimed Silhouette infusion set. If so, if you remove the two tooth-like "prongs" on the Minimed inserter, you can use it to insert the VariSoft infusion set. Made me feel "more like home" for me. FYI

My 13 year old son is currently on the Libre and MDI, and we’re waiting for him to get the tandem with control iq. His TIR is always above 90% and his A1C is always below 6. The reason he wants to go on the pump is to take a little bit of the pressure off, since such tight control (especially during puberty) takes a lot of work. Would you suggest this pump for someone who already has good numbers? My son’s endo already predicted that after switching to the pump his A1C will probably increase at first.

Control IQ will only basal in sleep mode, it will not give you a bolus, right?

That's what I thought and so I checked. It does NOT auto-correct in sleep mode. That is why I have not yet tried to stay in sleep mode all day. But I'm super frustrated that with the 5 hour active insulin time I feel like I stay high longer than I otherwise would because Control IQ doesn't want to give me more correction.

It's what I coach on for stable and predictable blood sugars. Essentially we learn how things in life (nutrition, exercise, etc) can affect our blood sugars, then we follow a framework to experiment and see how true they are, then we use that formula to cruise through life with blood sugars on easy mode.

It’s not identical, but I find if your loop targets were comparable to sleep mode targets, running control IQ in sleep mode 24/7 is comparable to loop if you adjust your settings to be on the aggressive side. The benefits are obviously that you can do it using an in-warranty pump (or not use pods of that was your hang up) and you don’t need to deal with the connection issues and other challenges that come with the additional loop hardware. I’m really happy with the switch so far.

Mathew Parrick depends on your insurance coverage and what you already have. I used the Dexcom G6 with both and reservoirs and infusion sets are required for both, so I’ll call those a wash. I was android before loop so I needed an iPhone ($900), a developer license to build the app ($100/year), a Rileylink (can’t remember... $60?), and a compatible Medtronic pump (~$600 through the under the table market). Totaling near $1700 to start with no available insurance coverage for those costs. New pump costs for tandem will be based on your coverage and when you’re eligible for upgrade, as would the Omnipod (if you chose to Loop with pods. YMMV

What's the highest have you seen your BS while CIQ is trying to correct..and how did that go?

Maybe mid 200's? (like 250ish). I ended up giving a manual correction to speed it up, and it eventually came down
