Congrats on your first barbershop experience. The result looks good. I usually ask for a #3 or 4 back and sides... which is a little longer but you have to go back more often. I usually chat a bit with my barbers... but not as much as if I'm in a hairdresser salon. I've never had the razor cut thing. You were honoured!! :-)

Did you see Ivan E. Coyote's telling of a barber shop experience? Good stuff. He always gets right to my heart.

Supposedly women just multitask better than men (said by people who say masculine = man, feminine = woman, I'm trying to be as politically correct as possible when saying this). I know when I'm really focused on what I'm doing, talking takes away from whatever it is and hurts the quality. I think the current feminist thought is that "men and women are the same" (and I've heard "there is no such thing as a male/female brain") -- but I really think there might actually be a more masculine/feminine way of getting to an end product, neither of which is better. It'd be interesting to know if male barbers generally prefer the silence.

Since I made that barber video a long time ago, I've been to many more barbers, and I've met some highly talkative ones! I think it may just depend on the individual! :)
@andyhobbz67997 жыл бұрын
right on! Do you get chatted up by old men a lot? I've noticed that older guys seem to be chatty with younger men. Before I began HRT, I got chatted up by two older guys on different instances about how they HATED getting uhhhh..."feminine products" for their moms when they were younger. Now they chat with me even more (now that more folks see me as male)...I kind of like it!
@TheSLOfox7 жыл бұрын
haha, that's funny. Yeah, I do find that older guys can be very chatty, more so than I experienced before I transitioned.

Barbershops can really differ from neighborhood to neighborhood. Some have old timers that will just cut and shave and keep the conversation to a minimum and others are spots to go catch up on the neighborhood gossip (ref Coming to America barber shop scene). Mind you, if you don't know the gossip, they'll just blab amongst themselves and other patrons while you're sitting there. The good ones usually give you the hot shave on your neck at the end. You can tell them what size clipper to use (the bit that slides over the clippers to keep them a certain distance off your scalp). That way you walk in and say, "I'd like a number 3 on top and 2 on the side" and they will use that to keep you from getting a high and tight hair cut. As far as what they thought of you, probably not as much as you'd think. They've probably cut several thousand heads of hair and seen just about everything. Unless you came in with a Frankenstein flat head, there is no reason to suspect they even took notice. They probably talked about baseball after you left.

It's interesting to learn about barbershops from a person named Allison! (a girl) :) I like it. (I remember that you're trans.)

Haircut looks good on you will you go back to the barbers?
@TheSLOfox10 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, I will go back... I might try out other barbershops in the area, just to get a sense of what my options are, plus I enjoy soaking up various manly/barber experiences! haha.

Barbershops are such a foreign thing to me. We don't have them in Sweden what I know of. Nice to hear your experience.

I wanted to go to a barber when I first got my haircut but ended up going to this lady in a hairdresser place. She kept asking "are you sure you want to cut it all off?" Like yes. I know what i want lmao!! My haircut is like short on the sides and about 6 inches on the top, that flows to the right. My hair is kinda wavy .-. But i like it. Thinking of getting it cut shorted next time, and going to a barber shop.

I liked this video, very informative. I actually learned how to cut my own hair to avoid these situations lol

I'm glad you liked the video. I actually cut my own hair the last two times, and have here and there in the past, but it takes me a very long time, and I can never get it totally even or smooth.

TheGuomboe thank you for the tips! I do have a shaver with a cord, rather than a battery. I'll look into the blending scissors and see if they could help me with my self-haircut problems... :)

I'm moving to America... So I am curious about how much the haircut cost, and how did you cut your hair before?
@TheSLOfox10 жыл бұрын
Cool! Welcome. It cost $17 and I gave him a $3 tip. Before, I usually went to this one stylist who I first met at a cheap salon for men and women. He charged $35 and I gave him a $5 tip. Also, a few times now and then I'd cut my own hair, mostly using an electric clipper, which I did the last two times before going to the barbershop.

I see - haircuts in the US are certainly much more expensive than in China! Thanks for the information - I guess I will have to learn to cut it myself too... By the way, I'm going to college at UC Berkeley, so kind of close to where you live! Maybe later on I can bother you more with questions about trans resources in the SF area XD

We had haircuts on the same day! Excellent. I actually have very thick, coarse hair and it's near impossible to get the styles I want. I'd have loved the neck shave, though. I've hair that grows very far down my neck in two long stripes. . . it makes me look slightly primal.
@TheSLOfox10 жыл бұрын
What a coincidence! :) I wish I had thick hair...

Hey, have you been back to the barber since this trip? (I'm catching up on some older videos...) My trips to the barber have never been silent! Most of the time the guys are talking constantly, which is hilarious. Also, I remember being surprised by the porn at the barber. Now, I just cut my hair at home because I'm cheap. Lol
@TheSLOfox10 жыл бұрын
yeah, i went back and wasn't happy with the haircut. Actually today I went to Supercuts and got a better cut! :) Porn? Whoa! crazy! Maybe I should try more barbershops just for the experience... sounds like you never know what you'll find! The one I went to had pictures of old cars, and puppies!
@hcomtois10 жыл бұрын
Puppies, eh? That's stranger than porn, I think.

I think taking T should be considered as a rejuvenating therapy for all women as well. You do indeed look and sound much younger than you are. 😄 (And as a gay man I don't mind having double as much guys around. XD)
