Buddy nice video. Personally I get the impression from this video, the e90 was running to closely behind the e46 hence the drag helped the e90 drive more efficiently. Just a thought.

Although there is a 320i badge on the E90, I can tell by the instrument cluster it's the N43 318i (2.0 143 PS), cause I have exactly the same car, but LCI version from 2009. 320i LCI has 170 PS and has tacho till 7500 rpm. Or maybe there was a bit weaker version of 320i N43 for South African market, not sure. If this is indeed the N43, then I am surprised why it hasn't beaten the E46 more. The direct injection allows the engine to run lean, which helps to get a good fuel economy. Also, you should switch after half the distance: the E90 was always driving behind the E46, the aerodynamics could have been slightly better for E90. And finally, judging the score should be done after refueling, the on-board computer might not tell you the truth. Still, great comparison test, where two cars drive together, that's the only way to compare them, good job! :)

Was this a E90-320i vs E46-318i? They have relatively the same engine. N42/N46 in both. So the result is not completely surprising. Yes there are other factors, but the result show what we should have known by just looking at the tech in both cars. The E46 facelift got the newer engine. Now if you tested the pre-facelift E46 318i, result would be very different with the M43 engine.

Yes the E90 is 320i (N43) E46 is 318i facelift (N42) The N46 is in the 2004/2005 318i E46( We have that car also) Will feature in a future video soon. I think the PreFacelift would do worse😄

Ah I see its the LCI E90-320i, so it has the N43. The pre-LCI E90-320i has the N46, similar to the latest E46 facelift 318i.

@@MrTinuvaThe earlier E46 got the M43 engine with 8 valves (not 16) and has lower consumption on eco driving because offers torque at lower rpm, simply you dont need to rev it. 316i e46 has lower consumption even that 116i e87.

Great effort, there are too many variables to say the test is accurate. Some of the variables not considered, actual speed vs speedometer reading, obc correction factor, size of wheels. If I wanted to do a similar test, I would fill up to the brim, measure distance using GPS and then fill up to brim again, then calculate consumption using distance and litres.

You should check out the vid with two guys economy testing a prius and a 6.0 v8 corvette: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6WzqKGprqyHrtk The prius won, but on a brim to brim tank test the 6.0 petrol corvette got 30.4mpg us or 36.5mpg uk. How is it possible your diesels are doing only 12% better?
