I noticed that too. If there wasn't a severe crosswind, he either was too close to the runway on the downwind or he just didn't pull the plane around for final very well. It's always easier and cheaper to learn from other people's mistakes. :D

Agree 100% with your analysis on getting instrument rated. I've been on flights with my brother who flies 747's for a living where we got into IMC. I was flying the VORs and thought I was flying straight and level (by the seat of my pants) and I was in a slight turn that would have caused us to break bravo airspace. Suffice to say - having the ability to transition from VFR to IFR conditions safely can't be understated. More accidents occur due to situational awareness issues making that transition than mechanical failures or many other causes combined.

Couple of thoughts: don’t rush your instrument training. There’s much more to it than just flying IFR. First, you must know both FAR Part 91 and the AIM like the back of your hand. Secondly, ask around to get the experience in a spatial disorientation chair. It will induce vertigo in two axis and will give you an experience you’ll never forget. Very important to understand vertigo and its effect. Thirdly, once you get your IFR certification, don’t attempt single pilot IFR until you build up a significant hour experience level IFR and in IMC. There are so many general aviation accidents resulting from inexperienced pilots becoming overloaded that it is shocking. Don’t become a NTSB statistic.
@mojogrip3 жыл бұрын
I’m a year in. Trust me it’s not being rushed
@RealRickCox3 жыл бұрын
Amen! I've experienced spacial disorientation... it's SCARY when you realize that when you THINK you are feeling is totally wrong and you have to trust the instruments 100%. I heard someone tell me recently that more accidents occur as a result of spacial disorientation than all other causes combined. My tendency is to rely on autopilot to fly headings and making turns. But if there was an electronics failure, I'd need to have the basic stick and rudder skills to fly with the analog instruments.
