Quick tip for some newer mechanics. You are working with a gas tank. There will be fumes that are bad for you ESPECIALLY if they catch fire. Work on this outside or somewhere with good air flow and don’t wack it with a hammer. It will spark

I know this is an old video but my fingers are crossed that I can still get help. I have a 2017 Infiniti and I was pumping gas today and it started to pour out at the bottom of my car around about half a tank I’m guessing because that’s where I ended up when I had to stop .
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. No matter how old the video is, we will always be here to help!!! 😁 It’s likely that your hose has begun to leak. However, first we recommend taking a look at the fuel filler neck which is the part that the gas nozzle goes into at the gas station when you are filling your tank with fuel. Follow the fuel filler neck down underneath the vehicle and see if it’s leaking. It’s easier to check this soon after fueling the vehicle as the leak-point will be wet and very noticeable. A few things can cause your fuel filler neck to begin to leak. Years of rust causing whole/leak or a rock hitting it while driving on a dirt road. If your fuel filler neck looks good and has no leaks, the next part is the rubber hose. The hose itself can dry-rot and warp over the years leading to leaks Let’s start there, please keep us posted. Us DIYers need to stick together!!! 😎👍

Hey Michael, I'm planning on doing this with my 01 Chevy S10 soon. I have one question that might have an obvious answer. Is it necessary to drain all the fuel from the vehicle before doing this? Or does the tank just need to not be pressurized? Thanks in advance. Amazing video.
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders Жыл бұрын
We appreciate that, thank you. Great question and we recommend having no more than a 1/4 tank when performing this project. Having a 1/4 tank or less will ensure a good amount of separation between the top of tank where fuel hose secures into and the level of fuel inside…ultimately lowering the risk of fuel spill.

Thanks for checking out the video. Have you ordered new hoses? It is very common for an old hose to stiffen/harden and cause gas fumes to leak. With that said, your hose might not even be leaking actual fuel...It might just be letting out a fuel scent due to the leaky hoses. Keep me posted. @DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 6 жыл бұрын
L- Kane Oxnard 805 Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your experience! Let’s get this figured out! The FillPipe restrictor is installed on top of Fuel Filler neck & provides a circular hole for the nozzle to go into. The part only allows unleaded size fuel nozzles to enter into & fill tank...the restrictor won’t allow leaded fuel nozzle ( which is larger in diameter ) to enter. Hope this helps! Went to do this last night on my 2000 Ranger and it didn't work out good for me... When I went to pop the filler neck off, it was so rusted that it broke off. The hose clamps are so rusted out, I couldn't even get them to turn. That was after soaking them in PB Blaster for 30 minutes. Now I'm stuck with about 1.5 inches of rusted fuel neck still stuck in the line... Going to try cutting the hose clamps off and breaking apart the remaining fuel neck inside the tube. Hopefully I can get it all out, or I'll be stuck replacing the entire hose. That's a job all in itself. Been searching all over KZbin to see if anyone else has had this happen to them.

I recommend waiting until your fuel tank is below 1/2 tank before changing part...this will allow fuel to be lowered and alleviated from the filler neck as well as rubber hoses connecting to tank...decreasing any chance of a fuel spill. Good morning & we appreciate you watching. Welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. As long as the fuel level is below the opening hole that the hose connects to, you won’t need to drain tank. If the fuel level is above the hole, once you remove the hose, it will leak fuel until the fuel level is below the hole. It’s important to plan accordingly & have a container ready to catch fuel that leaks. 😎👍🔧🔩

Hi Borders. My car is the 2003 ES300 Lexus and it has the GAS TANK NECK SHIELD (right at the filler neck, it is a piece of thin metal that used to cover the hose at the filler's neck. When you push the gas dispenser in, it opens. When you pull the gas dispenser out, it closes) It is disappeared and I believe it might have dropped down to somewhere inside the filler neck and blocking the fuel flow from the neck to the gas tank. I am now having the false shut-off when I try to fill my gas tank. Do you have any idea how to remove it? And why all the cars have that shield, what is its function? Thanks! N. Le

Guy inSJ Thanks for checking out the video. This is an uncommon situation although I have heard of this in the past. A couple options 1. Taking a magnetic tipped extension tool that is bendable and adjustable to guide into the filler neck to see if you can grab the loose piece with with the magnetic tip. You can purchase tool at AutoZone 2. Take some time and carefully remove filler neck and then try to shake the part out. Then reinstall filler neck "Depending on if the filler neck is in a good enough condition to be worthy of being reinstalled" 3. You may just want to purchase a new filler neck. Let me know if you have any questions. Subscribe to the channel if you're up to it thanks again 😀👍

patrick lynch Thanks for the update. This is exactly what will happen when your hoses are leaking. Once tank is full of fuel, there is a portion of fuel that fills the filler neck & then automatically triggers the handle shut off mechanism. That small portion of fuel then leaks out onto the floor...not good. We recommend taking a look & trying to locate any signs of leaks on these hoses. Keep us posted. patrick lynch Thanks for watching & sharing your question. It’s very possible that you have a warped hose tip which leads to a loose connection point. When do you smell fuel? Is it more noticeable at high speeds? Keep us posted. Please subscribe to the channel and turn on your KZbin notification Bell 🛎 that would be awesome thanks again! 😎👍🔧🔩

patrick lynch Thanks for watching & we appreciate you sharing your comment. The most efficient way to tackle this is to go below vehicle & inspect all fuel hoses & or lines feeding out of your fuel tank. Focus on the fuel filler neck & in most cases, the leak will be toward the lower portion where the filler neck makes a turn toward the sub system hose. Keep us posted. Thats sounds like a fun job. I have heard of people using different kinds of bond solutions however Im not sure if I can recommend that due to not ever seeing the results. Is there a piece of plastic on your design that houses the filler neck top or was it all rusted away metal?

Typical symptoms: U get check engine light for EVAP, the kids at oreallys or autozone will try to scan you into buying a gas cap. You gotta take the retainer that holds the old one in place and accumulates salt and rust. Better yet take it off before u get this shit

Hi there. Btw, great video! I have a question. You know, removing a radiator hose can sometimes be a challenge... you have to twisted, etc. Now, what about the fuel filler neck hose? Is it harder or easier to remove than a radiator hose? Or as hard?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 7 жыл бұрын
3dplanet100 Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your comment 3dplanet100! As I worked through this project and got to removing the hose, I found that just by carefully rotating it...this allowed the hose to slightly loosen and I then slowly worked it off. As you know, the hose connects to the tank...and in most cases, it’s very rusty...you want to be extra careful as you remove the hose. Aggressive tugging might harm the tank...may cause future leaks...don’t want that. Let me know if you have any additional questions my friend. Please subscribe to the channel and turn on your KZbin notifications that would be awesome thanks again! Definitely keep me posted on your repair! 😎👍🔩🔧

You can purchase a tool that slips under the hose and the metal part to freeze a stuck hose. The cost varies from $5 and up, just depending on where you go. The one from Harbor Freight ran me $5 after tax and works great

Hey nice video. I have a 2000 Corolla which looks like it has the same set up as your Toyota. My fuel filler neck is extremely rusted. It finally decided to start leaking. Upon inspection I think it must have a small crack . My question is do you think it is safe and easy to replace? I have done alot of repairs to my own car over the years. I am mostly just scared of working with Gasoline. Thanks.

Thanks for checking out the video. This is a pretty friendly repair. It is imperative that you use caution while working around the gas for reasons that you're aware of. Gas is always crappy to work with as it can get all over you throughout the project haha. Let me know if you have any questions. Subscribe to the channel if you're up to it. Thanks Again!
