Good info. I found that eating real food earlier works better. I only use gels for caffeine now.

There's something to be said for real food. It's certainly more enjoyable to eat than a gel.

*Unprofessional driver with no special training. 🤣 😂 I never thought about the difference between whole foods vs straight sugars. I'm such a slow runner (working on it) that I can literally house a bowl of Mac n cheese and bacon and a donut and be on my way with a smile. #EVERYTHINGNewOnRaceDay 😆 I found in my first trail marathon, when I decided to fuel "properly" with gels every 45 minutes, that I had my first case of stomach pain. I need to find that balance between quesadillas and Quest! That last shot of you running was breathtaking!

I am the same way with my food. My competitive racing days are long over, so I just pack a big tupperware dish of leftovers for my ultras. Mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, bacon, beef jerkey, etc are all perfect foods for me on the trail - and the kids loose it when when they see the old man eating spaghetti and meatballs while they are sucking down gels LOLOL

I have been loviong Maurten gels too!! Have you tried? And also curious, how do you feel about caffeine in gels?

I've tried Maurten but have a hard time swallowing the texture. I don't use caffeine gels but I know many people who do. If I were racing a 100 miler I'd certainly use them to my advantage but I've not done anything long enough where I've felt the need for them. I don't really caffeine ever.

I'll be making a DNF video about that one. It was basically the same race I had in 2021 but instead of ruining myself for a year, I tapped out around Mike 30.

which vermin do you recommend as backup on long runs? i'm sure you've gotten so hungry during a run that you chased and devoured vermin in the bush, we all have. Well, maybe not vegans.

I don't have a lot of options in the desert so I'd say the desert hare. That's about all I see on my runs. Whether or not I'd successfully catch one for back up fuel is a different story entirely!
