Fuerte avocado tree: a profile

I have a Fuerte that is huge as it’s over 50 years old. I’ve only been in this house for 20 years and it’s too tall but has been a terrific tree. I had great success with using honey water this year. It flowered in January but kept flowering until March. The baby avocados started appearing from where it started blooming first. I have a huge crop. I’m giving it lots of fertilizer to help it keep its crop. I do think it’s the best tasting avocado. My backyard is just mulch to protect the roots and keep it watered.

My grandfather has a Fuerte avocado tree in his backyard, and I climbed it all the time. It was so refreshing to see your son climbing on one. They are truly the best get away spot that gives you a snack :-D I’m trying to learn how to graft so I can always have this tree.

Great helper! Before I learned about avos, from you mainly, I planted a Furete, both the second and third year it had fruit! But since i planted it too deep and fertilized it wrong (steer manuer) it suffered from chlorosis. Unable to correct I removed this productive tree. So now have two baby multi grafted ones, planed correctly. Thx again for the great videos.

Beautiful tree and it’s huge for 6 years old! Have you tried spraying the flowers with honey water to increase pollination?

Thanks! I did try the honey water spray a couple times last year and the year before on that Fuerte but with no pollination increase. Bummer.

Hi Greg. Thank you far all the fantastic videos In this video you say the tree is only 6 years old. Is that the trees actual age or how long it has been planted in your garden? What size container was it in before you planned it? Thank you!

Good question! That tree was six years old from planting, and it was planted from a five-gallon container.

I planted a Costco Fuerte avocado tree in our side yard, about 1 feet away from the neighbor’s fence and 4-5 feet away our garage wall. I’m concerned that its roots might eventually damage the fence or the garage. Do you think I should remove the tree?

Hi mate I have a feurte and I want to plant in the ground. It’s still in a pot due to all the gum trees I have. I was told by someone at a nursery that planting them near the gum tree will not be a good idea. How far away do you think I should plant it away from the gum trees? I am getting removed soon but I want to get it in ground ASAP while the weather is warmer. I live in a cool temperate zone in Australia so I’m just trying to get it in ground before cold weather is back.

Oh no I hope it fruits for me then since I don’t live in a hot climate. I want to move to a warm temperate climate so I can grow avocados and other fruits etc. I hate the climate I am in atm, it’s cold in winter here and even still cold in spring too. What temperatures does it have to be to set flowers in spring?

You could plant it now but the gum tree will soon start sucking water from your avocado so be sure to give it extra water as necessary.

@@gregalderdotcom so the gum trees wont kill it then? They will just steal all the water? Would that be a good thing then to prevent wet feet? I live in an area that does get a fair bit of rain except in summer of course we don’t get as much. We do have droughts in aus every so many years and then we have good rainfall again for so many years. I will eventually get them removed but my worry was will they kill the avocado trees. Someone else told me they will kill it but I don’t see how unless I don’t water the avocados. I have a bacon I also want to put in ground too. I live on a steep hill but we do have some clay under the top soil so I was going to mound it up a few feet with sand and more top soil. But due to the hill we don’t have any pooling of water in the yard so I think the clay shouldn’t be an issue as long as I mound it up. What do you think about the clay issue? How high would mound it up and will it be okay and will the avo trees be ok if I plant them a couple of meters away from the gum trees as long as I water them? Cheers

Do you have a video any videos on what the flowers look like on Feurte? I have just got one recently and wanted to know what the flowers look like. I have a bacon too and I think it’s flowering which is awesome since I only bought it this winter(I’m in Australia down bottom in Victoria in cooler climate btw) I want to see what the start of the flower buds look like. Also does your feurte flower every year? I read they don’t always produce fruit but I think if you take care of it good it shouldn’t have any issues producing fruit. Just curious what the flowers look like when they first start.

I noticed your tree the leaves have a burned tip and sides. Same thing is happening to my young tree plant. Why this happens? Surely appreciate your comment.

How temperature low you have on winter? Sometimes 20f will be?

Only gets to mid-20s. In past eight years, I had 26 once and 25 once.

Is the fuerte good for Fresno county ? Or will it try to flower too early when still cold in the spring and not set fruit well ?

I would try it. I know a grower in Lemon Cove who gets good production from Fuerte. Even if it does flower early, it will usually continue flowering for a long time, into the warmer spring weather when pollination conditions are better. (Still, an A type is always likely to be a better producer over the span of numerous years.)
