Fuji X-T1 vs Nikon D7200 I've tested both and I never owned a DSLR or Mirrorless Camera. I always rented when shooting for specific assignments. I travel a lot and enjoy landscape & street photography and need low-light. I enjoy the lightness of Fuji, but one part of me thinks the Nikon will be a better option for what I want. Ideally I need only 2 lenses. The Nikon comes with a 18 - 300 mm zoom lens and the FUji with 18 - 135 mm. Though I've heard the Fuji lens is much sharper. Price wise I can get some good deals here in Japan. Any suggestions?

thanks for the nice review Toby, do you feel its worth paying that extra bit for the X-T1 over the X-E2, a large viewfinder is a very important feature for me.....is the X-E2 viewfinder too small...?
@kazcnepj10 жыл бұрын
The VF on the XE2 is pretty big and easy to look at. It also has the VF in the left side of the camera compared to the XT1 which is in the middle like a dslr. If a bigger VF is the most important thing than go with the XT1. It also has more features like an intervalometer, remote control wifi and more external controls including faster AF.

Great review Toby, happy you like the autofocus in normal light, the only sticky point for me was the autofocus! I am still waiting for mine, and did order it with a 23/1.4! I am thinking cutting rubber in the same shape as the controller buttons on the back and stick them with glue to just bring them up a bit but I'll wait and see if I need to! Oh did Christina play with X-T1? Any thoughts?
@photorectoby10 жыл бұрын
That 23mm is going to be sweet on there - wonderful walk around lens. Christina really liked it, she will share some more thoughts on the podcast tomorrow. The back buttons could use a little help and I think you plan might work well. Steady hands to get this little bits stuck on cleanly!

A very nice review. I'm currently in the process of selling som of my Pentax gear to get the X-T1 (selling my K-5, keeping the K-01 for video purposes, even if video IQ isn't that good on it, it's fully manual). I'm also keeping some lenses for Pentax to use on the X-T1 both with a normal lens mount adapter and a speed booster (not Metabones as they don't have one for K to X yet). I'm very excited about the X-T1 and the adapters as I'm a big fan of manual focusing.. Your video gave some more input about it, so thanks for that :)

I am a Canon 7D user and 7D starts to be a little outdated by modern standard, so i was thinking of upgrade. The only mirrorless body i can think of is this one, mainly because of it's weather sealing and this wonderful EVF. However, i'm still tempted to get 7D mark II at the same time. It is also good with low light, much more weather sealed (i live in Finland so it's important for me), the battery can hold way more shots, and after all i do some action shots sometimes, and 7D's focus tracking and burst rate are amazing. So it's a huge dilemma, 'cause if i'd have money, i'd just simply buy both, but in my financial situation i have to make a choice: smaller, cooler vintage-styled and quality mirrorless body or stay loyal to bulky Canon which is technically still better in many ways?..

Great review! Couple questions: 1. Image quality is better than the Canon 70D? 16MP vs 20MP? Why do you think it's better? 2. IYHO, do you think that in-body IS is better than in-lens? 3. I used to own a Fujica film camera. As far as I can tell, FujiFilm owns the Fujica name, right? Is there any reason why they started naming their cameras FujiFilm instead of Fujica, especially in this digital age? Thanks in advance.
@photorectoby10 жыл бұрын
1. We talk about this some in our podcast out tomorrow - But remember that the MP number does not tell the whole story and the X-T1 just has a newer better sensor that produces cleaner files. 2. usually lens IS is better but I think honestly that it is often a toss up - some lenses are better than some body IS and vice versa. 3. I think this is(was) an effort to connect their very good film line in the public's mind with their new digital camera line. They stopped using the Fujica name with the last of their film cameras.

At the ten minute point, you still didn't mention anything about the outstanding image quality of the Fuji. IQ is why photographers buy camera. Who cares about body built IS? Sony and Canon and Nikon don't have that. You can turn up to 7 different buttons into any function you want because they are customizable. The Fuji has phase detection. Remember that Fujifilm updates their firmware for their camera, even ones that are out of production. This is a 2+ year old and very outdated review of this camera.Many things have been enhanced with firmware updates.

toby I read it does have phase detection pixels ... , but I guess 70d has the dual I think that's the difference of getting the lowlight shots .... I was amazed at the iso performance on your blog iso 6400 and 12800 looked usable it helps that this camera has no low pass filter ... about the grip . I see that they sell a small grip for extra grip not a battery grip and I agree why buy a battery grip for bulk it up.. great review ..

Good video. You never did address whether the XT1 allows for live view exposure simulation like the canon does. The Nikons do not do that, so when changing a setting on the Nikon you have to guess at what the final picture will look like..
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
Fuji does. Pretty much everyone does except Nikon.
@kimberlynorton9 жыл бұрын
Yea, for that reason Nikon might not be a good starter camera for someone who eventually wants to progress in photography. Canon on the other hand does not offer a date stamp on entry level dslr, so there is the trade off.

I'd add that one of the reason bring me to the X-E2 is firmware updates. Fuji nailed it when it comes to firmware updates (today they released 2.0 software for my X-E2 with lots of goodies). The X-T1 is very nice, my impression is that it's still unripe for what it aims for though. Sure it's a very good start. Fuji lenses has very high IQ. I see the X-E2 as the only mature X-camera at the moment. If someone's searching for a pro-mirrorless body and want 1) smaller body 2) APS-C sensor 3) great lenses..then Fuji is probably a serious take. In fact I ended up to consider Fuji as the most-balanced-solution in the mirrorless market. I mean: - OM-D: incredible camera (not cheap) with an incredible amount of lenses (and this is probably its major selling point), incredible IS, but is lacking in point 1 (very big for a mirrorless) and 2 (smaller sensor = less DOF). - Sony A7: great FF sensor = great DOF, small body considering that it's a FF camera, but it's lacking in no. 3 (lenses). - Fuji instead is very good in no.1, 2 and 3. Obiuvsly nothing is perfect, neither Fuji. So it's up to our preferences. After all there will always be compromises to deal with. That's my view :) Great review Toby. I see your interest for mirrorless has growing lately. Very good ;)
@photorectoby10 жыл бұрын
You summed that up really nicely. I agree that Fuji and how much they seem to listen to the wants of the photo community AND provide those nice firmware upgrades is a big plus. I add about the Sony - not only is it lack of lenses but a fear of Sony changing something up again and leaving those with alpha mounts without a future. And "very big" maybe a bit of a reach for the Olympus but they are bigger - that's true. Would you mind taking this comment (or I could) and adding it on the review page? digital.photorecommendations.com/recs/2014/04/fuji-x-t1-review/ I think it is an overall excellent summary.

Thanks Toby. Really enjoyed this review as I am seriously considering this camera. Is there no way around the EVF/LCD trying to 'gain up' and creating noise? My big concern is night photography - shooting cityscapes and the like. I'm seeing demos of the Sony cameras at night, for example, focusing on the distant shoreline, and the LCD doesn't seem to have the noise issue you demonstrate this review. Yet the EVFs in these cameras are of similar resolution. Any additional tips or comments on this?

Hi I enjoyed your review and I recently bought the the Fuji X-T1. However, when I try to use my Nikon SB-800 strobe, the Fuji, if I am lucky, will only fire the flash once every four or five shutter cick attempts! I find this very annoying and had I known beforehand I probably would not have bought this camera. I know in your review you fired the Canon strobe without any issues and I am wondering if the Canon strobe has different contacts over the Nikon strobe. Please advise. Thanks

Thanks for the great vid. I've been a dslr shooter for many years now, but the xt1 just blows me away with the great image quality it produces, and the compact package. And so i'm about ready to jump into the mirrorless world of the xt1. But the transition would be much easier if there was an adapter system that would allow me to use my Nikon lenses! Would you recommend a particular brand? What are the disadvantages of using other brand lenses vs the dedicated fuji lenses? Thanks!
@photorectoby10 жыл бұрын
Rico, Take a look at the Metabones - they are pricey but good quality with reliable camera/lens communication. No real disadvantage of using Nikon on Fuji except carrying around bigger/heavier lenses than necessary - but if you already have them go for it.

Hey Toby, thanks for the great review as eel as the interview with Nathan. You mentioned in passing that the Fuji Xt-1 fired off canon flashes, obviously without the proprietary TTL or other auto features. I was wondering if it would fire canon flashes via the canon radio st-e3-rt radio remote. All that is needed is the triggering since the remote can control the intensities of the flash. Thanks!

Nice review - and nice camera - my big issues are - no Touch LCD or Touch To Focus - no IS on the Primes - IQ is very nice and lens quality overall is very good - so putting together a kit with few primes and some zooms is not cheap with each lens close to $1000 - Sony with their A6000 or E-mount APS-C seems to make lighter lenses - but then again not quite the same quality and no F1.4 or F1.2 or no 70-200mm F2.8 or a 24-70mm F2.8 either - Although I have the Fuji and NEX7 I still prefer my M43 cameras - the OMD-Em1 and most of all my Panasonic GX7's - just a joy to use - I am glad the T1 has a Mode Dial - something my X100 and X100s do not have - so yes the M43 does not quite offer the same shallow DOF although the 45mm F1.8 Oly and 20mm F1.7 Pani do quite well - just wish I had the Panasonic 42.5 F1.2 with IS - so there are few compromises but overall a more enjoyable system - I hope Fuji will work on making their X series a bit more user friendly - I guess the X100T coming soon can still be for the Purists that like and love everything manual - no auto focus - no Touch LCD - no Fn buttons etc - I just happened to like AF and Mode Dial and Touch LCD and Fn buttons etc :)

for me, i have to say the manual controls don't slow me down compared to a dslr. to switch modes i actually see me being faster. because aperture is always manual and in most cases ISO is set to Auto.. .. so when the scene changes i just turn the shutter dial a half circle and i'm in.. (I own the X-T10, so i dont need to press a top button) the exposure is always correct because of the Auto Iso.. compared to a dslr where i actually had to switch the mode dial and then the select the shutter speed was i step more.

@Kprawl2919869 жыл бұрын
A7 II you won't be disappointed.
@kaibe52419 жыл бұрын
+David Marte depends what you're doing. The lenses avilable to the X series are far superior to the ones available to the A7s. Also, depending on the model and your use-case, the A7 may be better, particularly in low-light situatiosn. The XT1 has amazing low-light performance, but the A7s are something else entirely - setting new bars for low light performance. Then there's the full frame vs crop sensor, again depends on your use case and what you're doing.
@kaibe52419 жыл бұрын
+David Marte also, the A7 is substantially more expensive (by double) of the X-T1

Features such as silent shutter mode (awesome for weddings/private events), better flash control, amateur on the lenses and more - all adds up to a really, really nice camera.

I love the fuji image quality, and fast primes, but I would rather have traditional control dials like on a Nikon or Canon or A7, front and back control wheels, and the ability to change focus points with one touch, so even though I love allot about the fuji, I have been reluctant to buy it, but the A7 doesn't have the glass, and has a noisy shutter, and everything else seems to be less image quality, so I am frustrated, I wish Nikon would make a D800e or d7100 mirrorless, or Canon 70D or 5D mirrorless, but they don't, I already have a 5Dlll, but want something smaller, and eventually would love to have a smaller lighter full frame mirrorless system, and get rid of my heavy Canon gear, but as of now i'm not sure weather to go for the fuji, it's important to me to have image quality, but it is also important to have a camera that is easy to navigate, so what do you think, any advice

atyl1972 Thank you atyl1972. I was all ready to buy this camera until the Nikon D750 was announced. I am glad I demo'd the XT-1 yesterday and, unbelievably, the camera in store (Jessops in the UK) had not much battery power, no SD card and the screen was flickering like crazy. Great demo! The viewfinder is amazing - huge, but those 4-way buttons are so deep and there is no 'give' on them. I am so used to Nikon but something about this camera draws me to it - if only it was full-frame as I do like shallow DoF's. I'll have to keep thinking until I make my decision.

Natu "Altermax" Myers there's no comparison. X-T1 is a far better camera than an A6000.

Natu "Altermax" Myers that's not to say the A6000 is bad - not by any means. It's an amazing point-and-shoot.

Kirk Bushell I know but I need to do some video stuff too and I heard fuji sucks for that
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
Sony if you want to do video too. Fuji X-T1 if you care just about pics and want a better manual experience
