The AF System in the XF56mm 1.2 is one of the slowest in the XF Line. With the 50mm 2.0 for example you will have a much better experience (or any other of the newer lenses). Great examples how the film simulations are working. Thanks, very informative!

I'm also a Fuji user and I love how you grade the footage 6:40. I still use dslr for my videos (and FCPX for edits), because most of the times either the shadow or the highlight are crushed or overblown respectively, very tricky to grade. How do you grade your Fuji videos? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for going so in-depth with your reviews and showing us the negative aspects too! Subscribed 😀 I recently got the Zhiyun Crane. Pretty amazing! I couldn't find any info about connecting Fujifilm cameras for using the shutter button from the gimbal. Do you use the Panasonic or Sony compatible cable? I got the Rhode Videomic Pro, because I thought the X-T2 didn't support unpowered mics... Now I see that everyone is using the Videomicro. Is the extra weight of the Pro going to be an issue with the gimbal? What's your take on the two mics? 🙂 Do you use an external monitor when recording yourself? BTW, the links to the Slider and Tripod Head point to an Amazon item which are "Currently unavailable".

Great video mate..I have an XT2 that I use for stills.. I have been looking for a decent 4k setup, and after this video I think I'm just gonna stick with the camera I have.. On an unrelated note, I'm born an bred in Brissy, and I've been living in California for the last 2 years.. this video also served to make me very homesick =P Thanks for the video, mate. Keep it up!

I agree with many of our points. That battery issue drives me insane haha. I had mine since launch pretty much and has been pretty good for photo and video. I would like to see an improvement in video profiles. I feel like they could improve the highlight retention the most. Pro Neg STD offers the most dynamic range in my tests but I do notice a green cast in this profile.

Thanks for posting this Mitch; great info, very helpful. At 12:10, when you say the camera stops recording, can you restart recording again right away, or do you have to replace the one dead battery in the grip before you can start recording again?

Fantastic review, mate. Clear, precise, honest. I own a Fuji X-T20, and I'm very happy with it. I'd love a X-T2 but it was still a lot of money for me. However, the X-T20 still keeps most of its "mother" advantages and is a great alternative (and has a touchscreen for AF). In the end, it comes to Fuji being excellent for stills and works pretty well in video. Yes, there might be better cameras for video, but the experience of a Fuji camera is the best for most people - like me. I have the 35mm F2. It's very good, specially in how fast it is for AF. Great job, Mitch.
@MitchLally
@MitchLally 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you José! Yeah I've only heard good things about the X-T20. Great choice. I think when you say 'better cameras for video' its all SO subjective. I hear a lot about Sony cameras being 'the best for video' - to me the image is not very nice looking. Specs aren't everything at the end of the day I guess.
@JoseOchoita

Mitch Lally yes, you are right. I was not clear enough. What I meant is that, for some, a camera must have Ibis, or to be full frame. But the truth is that Fuji is great and for some of us is the best. I love it. Now I'm just saving for a 56mm, even when is more expensive than my X-T20 haha. Thanks for the response.

Thank you. You've been helpful!! Just a question : I read that it's possible to record video with the grip plugged in the power and therefore resolve the batteries switch problem during recording. Do you know if there is a way to power up the grip 9V DC via an external battery like a VLock (with ou without DC 12 to 9V adapter). I'm thinking of making a setup for documentaries with an XT2 but I need to find a proper alimentation system. What was your setup loading batteries on the go you show in this video? Thank you again.

great review! thanks so much. i have an xt 2 that i primarily use for stills and love the quality of the pictures. i am looking into getting another camera for video (when i want to shoot video and photo simultaneously-like at my kid's bday party). i was considering canon 80d or panasonic gh5....but after watching your video i may stick with fujifilm....i hope that fuji would make a camera more suitable for video in a small size like the xt2....that would be awesome. No other camera comes close to fujicolors straight out of the camera....and that means a lot to me since i have 2 small kids and dont have time for post processing.

Hi Mitch! thanks for this review. I'm planning to pickup a system for 60% stills and 40% video work. I'm only starting to get into video but am having fun so far. My question is whether you prefer the look of the 5d3 with ML, especially given the extra bokeh you get vs the footage from the XT2. I would choose the 5d3 over the XT2 for stills given my personal tastes, but I'm curious as to what you think about video given that you've been using both?

Hey Mitch. Really good video. You make a lot of great points about the camera and your narrative is quite articulate. The only criticism I will make, which will stay with you until you work on it, is how often you punctuate your thinking time with “um”s. It’s not a huge thing, but even a small quiet pause is better than your ums. You start most sentences with it, and use ums after all your pauses. It may take some time and concentration to change this, but your video was so good in all other ways, that if you sort this one thing out, your presentations will be perfect. The fact that you can think on your feet and run through a lot of areas in one take, make it worthwhile. Well done. James

As for Battery drain If you use the fuji batteries and use boost mode on the grip I think they drain from the two in the grip at the same time and a little from the one in the camera. Third party batteries and boost mode not great.

Just considering switching to Fuji from my Panasonic GX8 before I invest a lot of money in MFT glass. Sure, the XT2 is more expensive and if I sold all my Panasonic gear I could only afford (and I'd have to add some savings) one lens, but - it's an investment. I really like what Fuji is doing and I think they are the winners in price-quality-size ratios. I believe it's the best system for BOTH photo and video, and in a relatively compact size, but I would love to hear someone else's opinion before I jump ship. Especially since the XT2 got 120 fps... I believe the new XH2 (once it comes out) might have 4k 60p, along with IBIS, and I think that's really more than I'd need for a few years. (I plan on plunging in a freelance photo-videography journey.)

What do you think of X-E3? Good for filmmaking too? Will Fuji or third party add a grip to it to add more battery, record time and headphone jack? Does it has 5K to 4K downsampling record or just record at native 4K resolution?

hey there, your video kinda convinced me to buy the camera for filming. now that i have the camera i'm struggling with the focus :-/ i'm used to the canon video mode.... with canon i used 1-single-point focus to auto focus (single focus) and then you could easily adjust the focus manually... while still being in auto focus... how can i focus on one precise point with hitting the shutter button? so far i only found out that AF-C keeps following the subjects (you can't choose the focus point), and manual focus makes it really hard to notice on the screen if the object is in focus... because with the kit-lens 18-55 i don't have a lot of bokeh to see the difference... i loving using the camera to film people in crowds... so with face detection it get messy if there are more than 1 person. that's why a single-point-focus would help me alot thanks for helping !

the f2 trinity (23mm f2, 35mm f2, 50mm f2), the 80mm macro and the 90mm f2 are fuji's superfast primes in terms of Autofocus. 16-55 f2.8 and 55-140 f2.8 and 100-400 are the fast autofocus zooms. the 56 f1.2 is not a very good lens for video in the Fujifilm system. good video!

I'd love to hear and see more about your settings with focus and everything for the x-t2 are setup when shooting video. I've only been using mine for stills but I'd love to try out some video and I have a hard time setting things up etc. I'm sure I'm not alone. I've never done video before so guidance would be nice and I can't find much on KZbin about it. Also, do you have to setup everything for video and have the same settings on your photos if you want to swap between video and photos often? Seems like a lot of setup. Changing the simulations and everything when I don't want any of that for my photos since I shoot raw, or maybe the Raws are unaffected by the film simulations anyways? Thanks a lot, you earned a sub.

Thanks for the awesome review Mitch! Could you, please, clarify, is it possible to charge the xt2 via usb while recording? The second question, did you update the firmware to the latest version? if so, do you experience any problems after that? like camera freezing or something. And the last one, what about overheating in 4k?
@MitchLally
@MitchLally 6 жыл бұрын
No you can't charge it via usb and still record like you can with the Sonys. I would just buy the battery grip if you plan to shoot for long periods of time. I did update. No issues with freezing. No overheating so far. I did experience an overheat warning once but it was sitting in the sun for 1+ hours shooting 4K.

No I haven't. How do you do that?
@Tochka_Starta
@Tochka_Starta 6 жыл бұрын
well, you need the cable d-tap to 9 volt, I have one (bought it for the gh5 for really long timelapses), but when I plug it in the xt2's grip the camera screen shows nothing indicating that it is charging, the grip battery icons disappear, only the body battery icon remains. The same thing goes when I try to plug the wall charger to the grip. When the camera is off everything works just fine, but while recording there is no way to know is it charging or not. So, I am confused a little

Great video man! I do own a Fuji Xt-2 with the 16-55, great lense, but the no stabilizer is kind of hell in close shots handheld. Do you have any recommendations on good monopods and tripods for use in video with this camera, that reach at least 1,80 cm in height and be light? Thank you for your time.

I use the manfrotto video monopod. I also use manfrotto tripods. If you check out any of my wedding videos I list the exact products in the descriptions. Thanks for the comment!

Interesting option. Why would you move to Fujifilm's X-T2 in stead of, for example, Panasonic's GH5?
@GregWallis
@GregWallis 6 жыл бұрын
Fabian de Vries Because the stills image quality is far superior, and I know this because I also own a GX8 which uses the same sensor. Plus, for the professional work that I do, the SOOC 4K footage is far better for general purpose filming because the Fuji "film" presets are extremely good which means far less grading and work in post. Time is money etc.

@MitchLally
@MitchLally 6 жыл бұрын
Yep. Unless I need to match it perfectly with my XH1 Eterna profile in which case I will shoot Log and use the Eterna Lut. I still prefer getting the look I want straight from camera rather than using log for the VERY negligable dynamic range improvement it gives you (and that goes for sony, canon and panasonic too).

Hi Mitch, thanks for the great review, i make low cost Real Estate Video Walkthrough and we currently use the Lumix G5 that is an old camera. And now in 2017 we want to use a better camera to improve the image quality of our Real Estate Videos and I am undecided between the Panasonic GH5 and the Fujifilm X-T2. Which camera do you think that is better between the new GH5 and the Fuji XT-2 for the type of videos that we do. One important factor to me is that i need to spend the less amount of time possible doing Color Correction, Is true that the video footage from the XT-2 require less time in the computer doing color correction than the GH5 video footage ? Sorry for my english I'm using google translator. Regards,
@MitchLally
@MitchLally 7 жыл бұрын
It depends on how well you expose the shots when you're shooting. Real Estate is difficult because you usually have a large dynamic range to capture. GH5 has the v-log profile which is great - but I would probably recommend the X-T2 since you mentioned you're not wanting to do much post production work. The 12mm f2 lens that I have linked in the description would be a great lens choice for real estate too. I think you'd need to try both camera systems first before you actually make a decision. Hope that helps.

I was really really tempted by the xt2, LOVED the colors right out of the camera. I wanted a camera for stills and video for product shots and footage for my business. I ended up going for the sony a6500. Yeah, the colors aren’t as nice and need some processing... but you can’t have it all. The xt2 had the disadvantage of not offering IBIS (which is a major downside), not having slow motion and though fuji has a very nice ecosystem of lenses... they can get really expensive (even more so if you want OIS). With sony you get a decent selection of native lenses and the option to use amazing third party glass with adapters. The sigma 18-35 f1.8 works great with the mc-11 lens adapter. The xt2 is a great buy though, just not for my needs.

It makes sense what you say man. I was (and still am) shooting for others with Sony pro cameras for weddings etc. Sony is great for video, but when the time came for me to choose a camera I wanted a camera to be happy with working and actually feel good using it for all around purposes not only professional... Do not get me wrong Fuji is not perfect, especially on the video side, but it is so damn beautiful that you just want to hold and create with it, may it be stills video whatever... Sony is great on video with almost every mirrorless, but I trully find it disrespectful for customers when they realease a new camera on the same "line" after some months, like what they did with 6300 and 6500. Yea I get it that technology moves fast but come on. I would honestly feel cheated if I had invested on 6300. About 2 to 3 years it seems a reasonable time to introduce the next incarnation of a model. I honeslty believe that Fuji is much better on this side... About the lenses yes it is a great ecosystem that hopefully will grow with more third party lenses (since the success of the Xt-2) with cheaper price on these lenses. But what they say is true "the best camera is the one you have" so be creative and have fun with your camera.

. Hi Juan, do you have overheat problems with sony when recording in 4K ? I have it, and two more friends have the same headache. (That's why I give up and sold mine quickly)
@electrichimp
@electrichimp 6 жыл бұрын
Actually I don't. Though I'm not a wedding videographer or something like that, I use it to record videos for promotional purposes... maybe if I shot nonstop I would have that problem. It's really a matter of the kind of use you need to get from the camera. For continuos video the gh5 or the g85 might be better options, though not so much if you also want to use it for stills. in that case it's tricky... maybe the xt2. I went for the a6500 because I really really wanted the IBIS and the slow motion.
@TomOhle1
@TomOhle1 6 жыл бұрын
I moved from the A7s and haven't really regretted it. I tried the A6500 which was pretty good for rolling shutter but I never gelled with the colours or the heat coming off of the camera. The XT2 had the best rolling shutter of any hybrid camera I tried and the color was great. Personally I think for video , IBIS is overrated. Even with my Sony I'd always disable IBIS and go with a gimbal - there is simply no replacement for a dedicated gimbal on a job. For stills it's definitely an advantage of the Sony eco system for some subject matter. My biggest complaints of the XT2 for video though is I'd like them to offer a larger battery capacity for the boost grip for longer recording and stills shooting. In other words I'd love Fuji to provide a single large battery that plugs in to the boost grip. I also agree with the lack of punch to zoom - really wish they would include that.

Tom Ohle, unfortunately I could not afford a gimbal when I invested on the Xt-2, I still owe money for it, but I honestly adore this camera. Could you please tell me if the footage you get is really smooth (compared with sony or other cameras) and which is the gimbal you are using the Xt-2 with? To be honest I have shot weddings with the Xt-2, my real complaint - and it is annoying- is when you use the grip and one of the batteries dries out, your recording stops and you have to be careful to push the record button again, something that might not seem that important, but if the moment is crucial, it is annoying to be on the edge... so as not to lose any shot... there is a way around it (replace a battery, but come on Fuji!!!). About a big battery I do not thing it is that big of a deal, but you have to buy a lot (I bought extra 5!) Also it would be great and I believe not that difficult for them to include 120fps in the 1080p. To pay so much money and not have real slow motion it is really a pity for me, hopefully they might have it on a firmware or they keep it for the video version of the Xt-2 as some call the next incarnation of the model. Who knows... There also was 3 or 4 times, when I used to photograph using the small flash that was included with the camera, that the camera "froze" and I had to remove the battery..., hopefully they have addressed that on the firmwares, othe people had some issues with that. About IS, I honestly do not know what to say, it is the first photographic camera that I shoot video with, up to now I was shooting with dedicated to video cameras mainly by sony (and for other professionals), the camera it is wonderful to use it, I really love it... even there are shortcomings especially for video, but shortcomings makes you creative, right?
