I did some extensive testing and the upshot is that the only difference between RAW files with and without HDR applied (I used the 800% + HDR like you did) was that the ones with HDR were actually darker (and of course slightly cropped) due to a lower ISO (1000 with HDR vs. 2000 without HDR in my samples and I used Auto ISO with identical shutter speed and aperture and converted with the latest version of Capture One 21). The highlight recovery had about the same limitations in both RAW files and was not nearly as good as the JPEGs with HDR, so it looks like HDR is definitely a JPEG only feature, but as such useful in some high contrast situations. The three images taken don't seem to be baked into the RAW file at all (not matter what size), so no joy there!:)

@@martinbelusa1482 what i thought too... except one is auto, one is you got to do it yourself with a bunch of masking.

So luminosity masking is not the only option for processing HDR files you create yourself with exposure bracketing. Lightroom and Photoshop both have built-in tools for doing this. There are also a number of third-party options. Unless we figure out how to get at the embedded RAW files, exposure bracketing is still the better road if you want control.

Great tutorial! I like the fact that Fuji’s HDR function doesn’t mess with shadows because I can pull out any shadow detail in post. I love Fuji’s JPEGs (and HEIF). I never shoot Raw. Until now I’ve not used FR or HDR settings - I’ve always set the highlights settings a bit lower. If I play around with highlight AND shadow settings I get messy results. So I might use HDR having seen your excellent tutorial.

i'm always excited to see a notification from this channel (: 9:30 does fujifilm hdr raf file have more flexibility when editing? if we can recover more detail in lightroom with shadow and highlight sliders from hdr raf than a normal raf like we can do with a merge hdr file, i think that's the point and it's enough for me. i don't get the advantage of converting it to dng. (i own a x-t3 by the way, it's not relevent to me right now, but i'm curious)

I can't confirm this because I'm shooting with X-Trans III cameras, but check the maximum values for exposure in LR for the converted DNG file. Knowing that you are actually very busy with all that Fuji stuff, I have to admit, that you are my „source of truth“ when it comes to Fuji stuff. Thanks for all your efforts - especially when it comes to HDR in the Fuji space. I came to the conclusion, that Fuji somehow lose track, how to deal with HDR. To my knowlege there are a least 4 options. I don‘t mind and stick to AE bracketing. 😊
@LeicaCat2 жыл бұрын
Even though the DNG file "looks” the same, did you happen to compare the amount of shadow and highlight recovery you can do on it versus the RAF or JPEG file? I suspect that may lead you to the answer. When I do this process manually by taking three bracketed exposures and convert them into an HDR file in Lightroom, the resulting image looks the same as the 0EV exposure, but the amount of detail I can recover from the upper and lower ranges of the histogram without added noise is dramatically improved.
@alexcaruso8858 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing... the whole time I was watching and waiting for him to push the highlights and shadows in lightroom to see the difference from a regular file... I am, without looking, almost certain that you will have a lot more room to edit the HDR Raf file... This would be really cool to apply in a real estate photography sitiation or intense landscape.

I often set my X-T30 to bracket three different ISOs. When I go into Darktable and merge the raf files into an HDR file, it always seems to make the colours change a lot - often more yellowy. No idea why it does it, but heyho! Puts me off using it. As usual, it reminds that it's better just to try to get the light and composition right when I take the photo.
@storyinpictures60913 жыл бұрын
I don’t use darktable and I am not looking at your merged image results, but there are probably simple adjustments which will probably resolve the color issue. I would start with the white balance setting. If possible, you will want to set this before the merge occurs. It may look “wrong” at that stage, but if it gives you the right final result, it could still be good. Try lowering the temperature setting and see if that helps. Option 2: if you are doing images with artificial light (such as under streetlights at night) or with mixed light(different light sources) it is possible actual light color is being exaggerated. For this, try dialing back saturation and see if it helps.
@GabrielAlves-lp1qr3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't make sense to bracket ISO. You are not getting more light into the sensor. It's the same as lifting the shadows slider on a single picture. Bracketing aperture is not the smartest move too since your depth of field would change between photos. It only makes sense to bracket shutter speed.

To split the file you'd need to know how big the header is, and thus where to find the actual pixel data. Can any open source image editors (gimp, maybe?) open HDR RAF files? If so them browsing their source code might reveal at least which bits are header and which are pixel data. Looking at this info in conjunction with the same for a normal raw file might enable you to write a splitter. Speculatively it would be interesting to see if the total byte count is exactly divisible by 3 and if so it would be very quick to see if they are literally just concatenated - even if they RAWs themselves have headers, so e.g. it could be | RawHeader1 RawData1 RawHeader2 RawData2 RawHeader3 RawData3 |. If so you could literally just chop it. But I suspect it's more likely be | HdrHeader RawHeader1 RawData1 RawHeader2 RawData2 RawHeader3 RawData3 | or maybe | HdrHeader RawData1 RawData2 RawData3 |

If you convert the RAF to DNG in lightroom and embed the original raw, Adobe is NOT converting all three originals to create a new DNG, it still only converts the first RAF but the resulting file will contain in addition the 3 original raws like a backup.
@RichardSilvius3 жыл бұрын
Great explanation of HDR on the X-T4! It leaves me wondering though... is it not better to simply bracket and use the HDR photomerge option in Lightroom? I guess it could be handy if you’re a JPG only shooter, or use another RAW editing program that maybe doesn’t offer easy HDR merging.
@DaveJulianUTube2 жыл бұрын
Most definitely YES for many reasons. The Adobe software-created HDR merge from 3,5 or 7 auto-bracketed Fujifilm RAWs will be far better (and more user-controllable) than what the X-T4 can produce internally, and for several reasons. In my 2021 tests, Photoshop did a far better 5-RAF frames HDR merge than Lightroom, as Lightroom is more of less an 'auto' merge. Photoshop lets you control several parameters. DXO makes the HDR Efex Pro 2 app which exceeds what I can create in Photoshop. Beyond that there are other HDR-dedicated apps well worth doing same-frames demos of to compare. Hope that helps.

Great effort to make any videos of this channel. What camera used in your videos? I think it is x-t4, right?

Is it still the same average HDR quality on the newer X-T5 ?

Now I'm curious...is the HDR+ setting in the X100V the same as the HDR-800+ setting in the XT4? Or is it yet another set of parameters? Hmmm... BTW...your videos are great!

Hello. Need some help. I'm struggling with getting an extension tube for my new X-T30. Unlike other brands I'm unable to fine third party brands like Nikon, canon have. Further the Fujifilm's extension tubes are way more expensive with only one 11mm or 16mm tubes. Whereas, with other brands for similar price or less you get a complete set of three tubes. I'm from India. Can you give any suggestions??

Third party extension tubes for Fuji X system have been around for many years. I’m not from India, so not familiar with your local options. I think Vello May have been one of the early ones, but now there are many. Try amazon, eBay and general google searches. Perhaps also search in FujiXforum.

This is just a total guess, as I have an X-T2 so can't test it, but I wonder if you get the ability to edit those three hidden raw files inside the HDR raw file if you edit using In-Camera raw processing, or using X-Raw Studio?

My X-S10 also has the same HDR mode but it is strange in so occasions and in bright light sets the shutter speed at 1/500 which results in overexposed jpegs. This is when shooting in Aperture priority. Anyone has a guess how I can go around this?
