I heard of another option for manual focus. Use optical viewfinder with small digital display and set it to highlight peaking and zoomed into 100%. So now when you are focusing when you see color you can press the shutter because the image is focused. And so you don´t need to look at the the digital square with your full atention, you can just look from the corner of your eye. I hope I explained well. Thanks for the video

@@Tudor_Mateescu please let us know if it works!! Another option for analog exprience is with dslr. Change focus screen to prism focus screen ( sold on eBay) and use manual lenses. It will be the same experience as old film camera but with advantages of digital.

I've tried it just now with it works like charm! On streets with f4/f5.6/f8 it will work great! Very cool trick.

I can't believe the coincidence watching this video in that I recently, only this month, purchased an Fuji xPro3 Camera plus Voigtlander Nokton SE 40/1.4 m-mount manual focus lens with adapter purposely to try and replicate, if possible, the Leica analogue style of photography. The settings I have made on my xPro3 are very similar to what you are recommending, I'm using the Optical VF with B&W Split screen in the pop-up ERF. A good manual focus lens and I have also assigned the ISO to front command dial so I have full manual control of all three exposure perameters. It is a learning curve but am finding the experience really enjoyable. I'm also finding you start to pre-focus the lens while bring the camera to your eye, also getting a feel for what ISO is best for lighting conditions. I didn't consider colour profiles but will have a look. Thanks for the very intresting video.

Also try magnification with or without peeking in the ERF. Long press the rear dial in manual mode and then focusing aids will change.

Thanks for a great video. In my film only days, I shot black & white images with the following: Leica M6 rangefinder with 21/35/90mm lenses Fuji 6x7cm medium format rangefinder fixed 90mm lens In the digital era, I tried using adapted 14/24/55mm manual focus lenses on a Fuji X-Pro1 for digital black & white. Custom film simulations allowed me to obtain the "film look" that I was after. However, I found manual focusing too difficult, too inaccurate, and too slow. I purchased 16/23/56mm Fuji autofocus lenses and a Fuji X-Pro2 to solve my focus problems.

I feel like depth scale accuracy is more important than the focus tab. It's often possible to add a focus tab but there's no fix for an inaccurate focus scale. This is a pretty good solution. I've definitely flirted with a similar switch using the x-pro system (with a wider lens, though). Ultimately, I don't feel the aps-c sensor can keep up for my needs. I think the other alternative here is the Leica Q. Used prices on the mark 1 have came down quite a lot, while XPro bodies go ever further up. With the Q you get a true Leica zone focus experience coupled with autofocus. Pretty brilliant and tough to match with any other combo.

i have a leica mp film camera with Summicron 28 & 50 and also x pro2. x pro2’s optical viewfinder with fujifilm leica m adapter to use my summicron 28 & 50 gives me 42 & 75 focal length. its zone focusing is perfect and easy. it is way better and cheaper than leica md. period.

This approach is what I have also been thinking of doing. But the lens not being able to scale accurately (for zone focusing) is the only thing that is making me hesitant to pull the trigger. And I love my Nikon full frame look. Maybe I will just save up and get the Q2…ouch :).

Super useful video. Thank you for putting the effort in and sharing your findings. I shot FM2n and Mamiya 7ii for around 15 years. I recently sold the 7ii because I can’t justify the expense of shooting it, plus it basically became too valuable to use. (I also have a painting practice and make music and have a classic Mercedes... needless to say, money is spread very thin... no kids thankfully 😂) I’ve shot digital for years to document art/exhibitions but I have, on and off for 10 years, been trying to figure out a way to have the analogue experience that I love but without the bill and the annoying workflow of scanning and cleaning negs! I’ve never used a digital camera that I’ve wanted to leave the house with TBH. This vid makes me feel closer to realising that goal though. I have an X-E3 and I agree re fujifilm needing their own manual primes, bc zone focussing is big for me. Also, I had NO idea at first what u were saying when u started talking about JPEGs! Haha but I like the way u say it now that I’ve figured it out. Sounds way more cool and esoteric with your accent! I’m gonna pronounce it like that and see if it sticks.

Hello tudor! Thanks for your videos! I also have an Xpro3 and now I strted using vintage lenses. I just want to ask, may you explain why there are two white framelines/boxes when I am using a manual lens? 1 box have a thick white line then the other have a thinner line. Which one should I follow? Thanks!
@Tudor_Mateescu
@Tudor_Mateescu Жыл бұрын
I don't know exactly, didn't find nothing specific in the manual. I think the idea is that the two lines are indicating the margin errors for framing. Because they don't adjust depending on your focus. In general you want to frame and focus from 1.5 meters and beyond. Focusing closer will result in inaccurate framing with the OVF.

@@Tudor_Mateescu That's excellent, it's gorgeous. So obviously it is a 50mm F2.8 equivalent correct?
@JLStreetDoc

I’m curious that since there is a crop factor. What would happen if you put the equivalent instead of actual. So if you have a 23mm manual lens, but you tell the camera it’s a 35mm, would that make the parallel correction better? Just a thought.

You can still use the lens focus scale, for example set the aperture to 5.6 and use the zone focusing scale on the lens that relates to f8, this will be close enough……

It's there a way tu assign the fn button to change the framelines? Would great when changing manual lenses
@Tudor_Mateescu
@Tudor_Mateescu Жыл бұрын
You can do this with Fujifilm Leica smart adapter, or you can add a shortcut in my menu. I don't have at the time of writing xpro3 on me but I think it's possible to assign a fn button (the smart adapter is working just like this - it has an fn button that lets you switch between registered lenses).

I've no experience of the more recent Leica Camera s but I bought the xpro1 when it first appeared. I still have it and like the image quality but coming from a Leica film M, I felt it was a poor comparison regards an analogue experience. In a Fuji, The focus by wire in manual mode is awful and the optical view finder is redundant because you can't focus using it. I bought the Fuji M adaptor and used M lenses. Solved the first problem but not the second...no way to use the optical view finder and the EVF of that camera is garbage. I understand the focus assist tools are better in the newer cameras (I have an XT3) but you are fully dependent on the EVF which breaks the illusion of an analogue experience. I did borrow a friend's M8 and in use, it immediately felt like using an analogue camera. I like the Fuji cameras though, no question. I just feel a critical piece of the puzzle is missing as long as there is no rangefinder.

Totally agree, we don't have true manual focusing lenses - just the new voigtlander 35mm 1.2 - and and we also need some rangefinder system in the OVF to be there.
