I see the clinical vs character difference. I have the 35mm myself, and it’s my favourite lens. I recently tried the 23mm f1.4from the same generation, but thought it tipped over to too soft, and Borderline unusable at f1.4. I wish more lenses were made like the old 35mm f1.4. I’m finding it so pleasing, and I can see it in your professional photos.

Thanks for this comparison! I have the 23mm 1.4 LM WR and the 35 1.4. I just can’t bring myself to buy the 33 because I will never give up the 35. I’m not a professional just a hobbyist. The 23 mm is amazing when I need sharp, but I love the 35 for every day carry and for that certain look.

I recently bought a used 35/1.4 and use it with an X-T30 II. I love having this kind of low light capability in such a compact kit, and the great IQ is just icing on the cake. I can walk into a club carrying a cute little camera and get some top quality shots. A FF 1.4 lens like Sony's weighs almost as much as this whole kit! Yes, the FF would get even shallower DOF, but for half-height portraits and head shots, I don't think I want anything shallower. I hadn't used a 50mm FF equivalent in years and worried that it would be too tight for general purpose use, but this lens focuses close enough that for people photography, I'm finding it to be a useful EDC lens that even works indoors at fairly close quarters (as long as I'm not trying to get group shots).

Great video! but now I'm confused what to go for 😅 What lens would you recommend (for X-T5) for someone looking for compact lens, good bokeh but also sharpness please? I've currently just got the 18-55 kit lens which is good for versatility, but I'd quite like to experiment with a prime lens! (shooting a wide mixture of subjects from still life, street, travel, people) Any advice much appreciated.

I was there (but with xt2), started 35 then 56, 16, 23 (mixed f2 and f1.4). If I do it again would go straight to 23 1.4. However, I think we all change preferences time to time. Write down your perfect set (or few, there are always some trade offs) and review it as often as you like, for example 23 + 56, 18 + 35, 35 + zoom, 23 + zoom. My most used this days are 23, 35, zooms.

The onset glaucoma comment took me out….I have both lenses and I shoot with the 35/1.4 about 85% of the time and when I want something clinical where I can zoom in and marvel and what the new X-Trans 40MP sensor can do, the 33/1.4 is what I reach for. I’m keeping both because I’ll never part with the 35/1.4 again

I think that apart from the things mentioned in this video you could at least add two additional ones. First is that 35 f1.4 has a specific field curvature (I am not sure about 33 f1.4) and this thing along creates different look to the image, creates more sense of depth wide open. Second is how both those lenses work against direct sunlight. More haze , flare in the old lens.

I own the 35mm F/1.4 it is probably my most used lens, just not recently. On the 16MP sensors this lens was glued to my camera, these days, I'm using the 23mm and 56mm F/1.4 from Sigma for almost everything and the 35mm really does not get that much use. However.... I've got a photoshoot on Wednesday and I'll be using it for that as doing some soft light portraiture, probably stopped down to F/2 or 2.8 which really helps the 35mm F/1.4 If I was to add another 30-35mm, there is so much choice Straight away if i did not own a lens and was buying 1, it would be the 33mm F/1.4. But since I got the 35mm F/1.4 another "normal" lens is not top priority, but I really want to test the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm F/1.2 (i could never justify the price of the 0.95 Nokton) But if I put my practical brain on... the Fuji XF30mm F/2.8 Macro just adds something no other lens i have can do I worry about how good that is at F/2.8 for none macro work and is it too detailed to double as a normal length portrait lens... doesn't matter not getting rid of 35mm F/1.4... but I really want to play with Nokton... although that may drive models mad using a manual focus lens and i imaging at F/1.2 it'll not be easy to nail focus on the eye

First of all, I love your videos and you're probably my favorite Fuji content creator. But I'm generally confused because you talk about the 35mm having character, yet when you do a side by side they look exactly the same and you even mention they look exactly the same. So this "character" and "magic" conversation just sounds like a reddit hivemind mentality to me. P.S. I'm talking strictly outside of sharpness and "zooming in" which 99% of photographers don't do. And 99% of people looking at photography won't even notice
@Iamtongue9 ай бұрын
So ya, looking at the side by side comparisons I don’t see much difference. But it’s the set of circumstances that probably made it so. Flat lighting, shot it at a certain distance etc. But if you were to use it for actual shoots like a portrait photoshoot like I would. You’ll see how the lens performs. I saw a pleasant softness to an image that I like from the 35mm and there is a certain “look” to it ie the character. Again it’s hard to explain online and with KZbin’s compression it’s harder to tell. If I can sum it up…33mm much sharper, 35mm is much vibier😭😬😅😆😂 I hope this helps haha

Little bit wider, but I find the Viltrox 27 1.2 has one foot in each camp, while the wider aperture compensates for the loss of DoF the wider FL would otherwise have brought. As sharp as the best of the new Fujis, with the optical flaws that bring some character (flares when not out of control bad and swirly bokeh. Shame it's so big and the AF lacklustre. Could I be tempted to swap the 33 and 27 back to the 35 1.4 ... Maybe. I'm certainly in the "it's a bit boring" camp of the 33.

For me, shifting from the 16-55 f2.8 to the 33mm f1.4 has been a huge challenge, but one I'm working at. I just found the 16-55 far easier to use (apart from being heavier), because it's just easier to get 'photographic looks' from things like short focal lengths. The 33mm is so close to the natural human eye that the drama and interest relies even more on creative/silky compositions or subject matter. It's a tricky lens, for me, but one that will make me better.

@@Iamtongue that's fair, the look is definitely why this lens is still being talked about all these years later. I will always lean towards the cleaner "clinical" lenses since some of the work I do is for corporate clients and that works better there, and I can always dirty up the image if they ask me too. But if they ask me to clean up a dirty image? May not be as simple. To me it's a lot like adding salt to your food, you can always add it later but you can't take it out if you've gone too far

Contrast, sharpness falloff, chromatic aberration, vignette, depth of field transition, bokeh rendering (bokeh balls, onion rings, cat's eye shape, closed aperture shapre, etc.), flare performance, coma aberration, color rendering and more. All together it gives a certain characteristic to the final image. The difference is far beyond just sharpness.
