Hi Maarten! This is a very helpful review. I've rented the 100-400 + the 1.4 extender twice and was very impressed. I almost bought it, but I don't really do the kind of photography it's suited for often enough to justify the price. I am surprised that the new lens is as close to the 100-400 + extender price as it is. I also appreciate your acknowledgement of those who were here before us. It sounds like you've done some research. My wife is a direct descendent of John Ross, the Cherokee chief who helped his tribe on their Trail of Tears journey after displacement. I did a little checking about Canada and ran across a book, "The First Peoples of Canada" written by Alan McMillan! There's only a few KZbin reviewers of Fuji who I read regularly and you are one of them. Keep up the good work!

Always nice to know that my work (and the details) are appreciated. When I’m out in a canoe, it’s hard not to think of all those who have travelled the same journey - and who’s care for the land enables us to enjoy it today. Hopefully we will be good stewards and leave this lovely bit of Canada’s history to our children.

Hi Maarten! I have no need for such a fine lens ... but I was intrigued to watch your video regardless after coming across some of your other Fujifilm video reviews. You have a wonderful non-patronising manner and it was a very enjoyable watch as expected - keep up the great work! I hit the subscribe button without hesitation. I had no idea where you were based but I'm from the UK but will be visiting Canada in a month and I'm all set to capture some of the beauty of the Rockies with my Fujifilm X-T2 and modest set of lenses. I have to say I was somewhat choked with your words at the end and felt compelled to write. Massive kudos to you for recognising and respecting those native tribes of the land - truly wonderful of you to call this out. And I agree the meaning of that greeting phase is beautiful. 🪔 I won't get to see you in person Maarten but I would like to say "Aaniin" back to you.

After my comment on the other vlog (About the H2-s,) I found this review about the lens. I find it interesting, I am used to Tamron- Sigma long lenses. Yet they have one less stop at the end of the range (600mm) How odd that the lens doesn't have a stabilization button? Is it always ON ? Despite the fact that I was waiting for a lens with one less stop, thanks to the cameras being able to take isos up, I don't think that will be too hard for us birders. Birds are mostly shot during the early morning or late afternoon. Thank you very much! I will await your final comments about both lens and camera when they are released into the market! Best from distant Uruguay.

I suppose there is no stabilization switch because there's no point in turning it off? Thanks again for commenting.
@PhotographerSen
@PhotographerSen 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to say, sir, there are at least two situations of long-lens use where turning the lens stabilization off is crucial, and both of those situations are quite common in birding/wildlife situations. 1stly, when set on a tripod stabilization needs to be turned off, otherwise it fights the natural stability from the tripod and often resulted in blurry photos. Now, if I presume this lens detects the tripod automatically (like the 16-80), 2nd question arises regarding panning. Lenses like these from other brands mostly have a panning mode in stabilization switch, that turns the horizontal axis off for a smooth panning shot. Now again, I suspect if XH2S does that in body or not, but I certainly know that many fuji bodies can't do that. So making a stabilization button on the lens does make sense, for a lens of this category.

@@PhotographerSen The stabilization (and I'm well aware what a disaster it is on a tripod) can be turned off in camera - I assume that leaves some optical system in place, but I didn't detect any issues. Panning is also accounted for (Fujifilm has been held to task for this issue) in the settings. An advanced non-panning mode is available. Hope this clarifies.

Thanks for your kind words. I do know what caused that. I'm using the Zoom F2 external recorder (so it's not an effect introduced by a camera) and even with 32 bit float (and no ability to set the level) an occasional gust of wind over-drives the processor. Next time - a better wind sock or mic inside the shirt.

Just got back from the Porcupine Mountains in the UP, since I am heavily invested in Fuji, will have to decide to sell my 100-400 with the 1.4 teleconverter giving me 840mm, or buy this new lens, which I like that the Zoom is internal and gives 900mm without a teleconverter. I will wait until this fall when Fuji's 40 megapixel camera comes out and next year after seeing extensive BIF birds in flight testing to buy the New Fuji Camera or jump ship to the Sony A1 or Nikon Z9...Thanks for another Great Video

This lens arrived yesterday and so far so good. I've attached it to an X-Pro 3 with a 1.4 converter. However I am unable to use the Focus Preset function. I think it is because I am using it on an X-Pro 3 which is not subject to a Firmware update that allows use of the preset function. I don't think it will be a huge problem for me because the automatic focus seems to be pretty fast. I'd be glad to receive confirmation/advice on this.

Thanks for the nice video. I was wondering what your thoughts are concerning the aperture of the new lens at 400mm being F7.2 vs the F5.6 on the 100-400mm. That's something where I'm wondering if it's not best to hold onto my 100-400. Then again I love sharpness and I'm hoping the new lens is overall sharper, especially at the long end? It's also a bit longer but I do own both teleconverters so it's not that big of a difference again, except for hopefully sharper images as teleconverters aren't ideal? Best regards from Bangkok

I was so happy to see a review from you on this lens Maarten. Was worried I would only find the usual suspects with nothing but good things to say. Looks like a great lens, but high iso noise in low light on the X-H2s was my primary concern, which you confirmed here. Lack of parafocal was the final blow for me personally. I wanted to want this lens, but have to be honest with myself. If I could afford it the 200mm F2 would be more in my lane.. Still considering X-H2s, but need the right lens for it. Coming from Z6 with 200-400 F4, it is hard to see the path...

Now that’s a focal length in my wheelhouse and kudos to Fujifilm for producing it because, as you say, that focal length in the APS-C arena is a rarity. Terrific introduction to the lens and, again, kudos to Fujifilm for making it “affordable”. Not wanting to sound petulant, I do wonder to whom Fujifilm is targeting this lens as it seems the bulk of sports/action/wildlife photographers (for whom this would be standard arsenal) are shooting “Canikony”. Then again, paired with that XH2s, it may just be a killer combo for the video/stills shooter. Props to your daughter too on the paddling coz it looked like you were moving at a pace based on the rippling of…the Humber?

Unless the focal range is really longer than specified, then this amounts to a crop factor of approximately 1.524? Are these "odd" numbers listed by Fuji, or did you figure them out based on observations? I'm not surprised you had little success at 600 mm in the canoe! You might have mentioned it in the video to warn potential buyers.

It is to me. I still don't understand why Fuji standard lenses exhibit this behaviour - the wobbly sudden loss of focus while zooming - when the competition does not. Suppose I wanted to use this lens for video at a motorsports event. There's going to be a lot of zooming in and out during recording. I wonder if the new X-H2S solves or at least mitigates this behaviour or if it's a "chronic" video issue with Fujifilm. So far the only Fuji lens that does well in video is the new powerzoom and parfocal 18-120mm...
@MaartenHeilbron

It is an artifact of the lens, not the camera. I find the XF16-55 to be usable, even if it's not strictly speaking parfocal.
