It hasn't been brought in to replace the X-T2 though, the X-T3 will do that. The X-H1 is in addition to the X-T2 for those wanting the image stabilisation and video features etc.

Yes. Maybe I could have worded that better. Ie replacing the XT2 and X-Pro2 at the top of the Fuji Mirrorless lineup.

Im curious, what features are you hoping for in the xt-3 that you didn’t see in the xh-1? I’m deciding whether to wait for the xt-3 myself.

"If it were not for this stupid, stupid screen on the back and don't really know what good that is...." I will tell you how good this Fujifilm screen is, it is perfect. For a vlogger no it's not as the flip out screen is better, but for a proper professional photographer who has no need to vlog, then the flip out screen like Canon, Panasonic et al is a complete waste of time and a hindrance. For a pro photographer, especially a wedding photographer it is a nightmare, it's not discreet enough and it near doubles the width of the camera. For example I am shooting bride preps and I want to get low down for a different angle I would have to take hold of the screen, flip it sideways and shoot with it away from the camera, instantly everyone knows what I am doing and then I would have to keep it out to continue shooting, as taking it in and out is so inconvenient and defeats the object. Imagine, flipping it out to get a low shot, then to continue I have to turn it and flip it back in, then out, then in...Grrr! The screen we have here on the Fujifilm (and on Sony) is so discreet, I can shoot people without them knowing , it's easy it articulate up and down and it stays behind the camera so nobody ever knows what you're doing. As I lower or lift the cameras I can just ease it out with my finger, then ease it back in as I bring the camera back to my eye, impossible to do with a stupid stupid flip out screen like on a Canon. Try an articulating flip out screen like Canon's and try and shoot quickly and discreetly, it makes it so much more difficult..honestly. This is the simple reason I will stop shooting Canon as I have had the taste of the Fujifilm rear screen now and it just works in a fast moving, stressful environment. I enjoy your videos and you have a great presenting style, thank you.

Wow great response. Thanks for taking the time. I shoot all my weddings with the 5D Mark IV. At times I use a cropped sensor Canon camera to catch some different video angles, I find the flip screen very useful. I just pop it out and and have total control. I have never found a bride, groom or guest was that bothered about what I'm doing with the camera and a pride myself on being discreet depite my 6'2" size. I love hearing different options like this though and hearing about how other photographers shoot. If this Fuji screen was perfect though I guess it would cater for all our needs.

I was suspecting this as well. I use my flip out screen a lot to do low angle, high angle, out the car window video and only occasionally to frame myself for a vlog. I think this screen would be better for most uses and the Wi-Fi pairing MIGHT allow a fast frame up...just not sure how fast it pairs. That’s always a flow-breaker!

Totally agree with David. I hate the flip out screens with a passion. Not only are they annoying for weddings, but totally indiscrete for street too. Fuji has a perfect screen for stills.

I bought an XT 10 kit with 2 xc lenses 3 years ago. Am very impressed. A few months ago I bought a 16 - 55 f2.8. XT 10 looked stupid on it!😊 Actually it kept switching itself on and off because of the weight! This week I went to my local camera shop to buy a tripod. Asked about the XH1 in the window at baht 45000. Yes I live and work in Thailand. She said body only, no battery, no card no nothing. I went ugh! And began walking off. She said 5000 baht gets you battery. I thought thats an expensive battery! Nah! It was the vertical battery grip! XH1 and grip for £1150! Been playing around and am very impressed. Love the silent shutter. Still getting used to the touch screen, have to use left eye in virw finder, which is awesome. 1 downside...... tooo big for street photography. So keeping my venerable XT 10 for that! Nice video.

Hello, would you recommend the x-h1 or the xt3? I like the idea of ibis as I shoot portraits and weddings but the xt3 is newer and better af. I'm leaning more towards the x-h1 (ibis and it's cheaper) but I don't know if I would be making a mistake getting one over the xt3. Thanks mate :)

Excellent video Adam, I really enjoy how you do these reviews out on location. Being an x-shooter myself, I’m very interested in the X-H1 mainly for it’s video features. It’s very frustrating that it doesn’t have a fully articulating screen, as you said it would be perfect for vlogging. It’s a shame about the focusing issues, but hopefully Fujifilm can resolve that through a firmware upgrade. Thanks for sharing mate! 👍

First Man Photography Also thanks for this review. All X-Shooters I know are missing a flip screen like on Canons. As I understand the Canon manuals, the dual pixel AF only is available at live view but not on normal usage shooting with mirror, is it? (FYC, I’m Nikon + Fuji-X shooter, that’s why I’m asking this dual pixel question...)

I don't know one single Fujifilm shooter who would prefer a flip out to the side screen like Canon. Why on earth would you want one, they are an absolutely pain. They serve only one sinle purpose, the film or shoot yourself. See my response to Andre's video below. I hope Fujifilm never ever bring in a daft flip out to the side screen.
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 6 жыл бұрын
David, I think you must be just thinking of Fujifilm still shooters. As a Fujifilm still shooter myself, I don't need a fully flip around screen. However, as a film maker who uses Fujifilm there are advantages to having a flip around screen and as a vlogger who’d like to use Fujifilm to record vlogs, I’d say it’s almost essential. By not having a flip around screen, Fujifilm is saying they are not interested in proving a solution for these needs. I sorry to disappoint but it’s not a matter of ‘if’ Fujifilm brings out a flip out screen, but when…and I don’t think we’ll have to wait very long! :)

I'm an architectural and landscape photographer, the former as my business and I'm glad the screen doesn't flip all the way out. That really is for vlogging and this camera is far to high end for vlogging. the screen tilts out sideways for when shooting in portrait format. YOU don't need a bulb mode, this camera is better than any other as the exposure can be set way beyond the 30 sec limit of others. the dials are a great advantage and the menu system is intuitive, I think you just need to get used to it. Dynamic range may be less than a full frame, but thats just not an issue if you are bracketing for landscape shots and I would have to disagree that its mushy, the fact that it doesn't have an AA filter gives it a huge advantage over the Canon 5D MK IV. Lastly, I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the quality of the Fuji Colour profiles, they are simply the best in the business. I think you should have another go with this camera, especially now that the autofocus has been fixed.

Hi Adam, another good video and was interesting to see you shooting a Fuji. I made the change to Fuji 2 years ago from Canon and have enjoyed my photography so much more...from the dials, the size and the fun that it put back in taking pictures my experience with Fuji and their awesome lens has made me so happy I went the route of fuji over the other mirrorless offerings. If your trying to decide Fuji you may want to wait until Octoberish as the X-T3 should be coming out and that might be more to your liking. I'm holding off buying the XH1 until I see what is coming out in only a few months.

thanks for the upload adam. fuji focus process is a learning experience that takes longer than a short trial to understand, tracking is usually spot on if you've chosen the appropriate AF custom setting to the scene being captured. Great videos! I love the tilt screen of the xh1. Imma wedding and landscape photographer so the tilt screen is perfect especially for portrait format. The flippy screens on xt4 and xs10 are tricky in handheld photography because they shift the axis making reportage shits very difficult. I never use a tripod unless I’m after long exposure. I consider the 6dmkII a better value for this type of usage: - flippy screen for vlogging plus dual pixel autofocus - no 4k, but do you really want that extra processing time, and storage ? I prefere the story telling than the image sharpness of your videos. - good image quality (even with a better dynamic range sensor, HDR is still necessary anyway) - you already have canon lens and stuff... - single SD card... right... that can be a problem... but if you backup your card on the go with a Memory Card Back-up Device, you should be fine

Thanks for the solid review, Adam! I am curious regarding the flip screen for vlogging. I have an 80D and G5 X which both have the side screen and I find that I use it to frame myself up and then generally forget about it because I want to address the lens. What I’m wondering is how good the Bluetooth and WiFi connection is, e.g. if the Bluetooth makes it any faster to get the Wi-Fi paired to use the remote app. Point being you could frame up and remote control using the phone and put it in your pocket and do your thing. But if it takes as long as the 80D to get connected then it’s possibly not a viable alternative and would slow you down. Is it something you tried? It might be too messy a process but if it’s fast then it might be worth it for all the video upgrades. I myself find it hard to get away from Canon because of the look of the footage, especially the warm colors and skin tones. I’ve tried to match it in post to get my G5 X to match my other Canons (I think it’s a Sony sensor) but it isn’t as simple as a color curve. I don’t think people realize the impact of what they call “color science”, but the way color is interpreted is baked in and grading has to work on top. Unless you like that cold, sharp Sony look, (which I personally don’t), it’s hard to turn your head from Canon. Fuji just might be the one though! The film simulations allow you to really hone in on a look you like. I want to love this camera haha but I still love my Canons. (Sorry for the over-explanatory comment but I’m sure you understand if you say “Sony” followed by anything critical on the internet be prepared to get hit hard by the gear heads hahaha. Sony always wins on paper but the reasons against it like ergonomics, usability and color interpretation mean a lot to some of us. Extended dynamic range and flatter video profiles don’t mean shit if you can’t get healthy skin without spot coloring or making the entire image too warm 😏)

Nicely put together video, and it's too bad the conditions didn't work out for you; however, I have to say I disagree about the screen. While not great for vlogging, this type of screen is fantastic for landscape photography because it allows you to angle it upwards in both portrait and landscape orientations. I think it's really well designed for its intended purpose, which is preventing you from having to lay belly down in the mud when you're shooting low to the ground.

Great review Adam. I am looking at going mirrorless, but it's such a huge expense, especially here in NZ where camera prices are so over inflated it's not real. I will have to sell everything in my current arsenal just to buy the body and a couple of decent lenses. I currently have a canon 7dmk2, canon 70-200 f4 a 17-40 f4 a 10-18 ef-s and a nifty fifty plus all the other bits and pieces that go with it. I am waiting for the right one to come along and although the XH1 looks really impressive I might just wait to see what the Sony AIII's have to offer before making a decision, I might still just go for a 6dmkII. Any advice you could give would be appreciated!!

I moved from a xt2 to a Sony A9, as the Sony is a lot quicker in practice. The image review took ages to come up on the lcd. I use the A9 for street photography, and it is amazing. The Fuji would miss a lot in comarison. Also, as you say the high iso is better on full frame. I still use my canon 5d4 for landscape work as I think it has an edge on dynamic range and overall quality. The weight isn't much different as the Sony lenses are massive - but amazing too! I use a little sigma adaptor to use canon lenses on the Sony. I find you do lose some functionality though. Also, get the little grip adaptor for the Sony. I have large hands and my little finger keeps 'floating' without it, which is actually quit uncomfortable and annoying over time. The grip adaptor makes a huge difference. I had the battery grip too, but sent it back as it made the camera unwieldy in my opinion. Had the A7iii been out at the time, I would have bought it instead most likely.

Maybe it’s just me, but I got the feeling that this was your first time hands on the camera with this outing. 1st you mention the disagreeable noise when compared to full frame cameras, yes it’s APSC, but your still on the mountain, so you did not examine the shots for noise yet, my understanding this camera does really very good with low nois high iso performance . 2nd, one of the neat features is switching back and forth between video and still, which I have understood the camera has to completely different setting storages that the camera remembers, and that with a bottom push you can go from one to the other. But you stated fiddily. Well, good luck.
@Firstmanphotography

I had been using the camera solidly for two weeks to bring you this review. I stand by my conclusions. My issue with noise was in low light at higher ISO. Its not bad, just not as good as a full frame camera like the Canon 5D Mark IV. The camera switches between video and stills very easily. To change any video settings though, one must enter the menu and that becomes fiddly when youre out on location on the job. There is no easy access to custom settings which I have become used to with other cameras.

It is not the top of the range Fuji, that would be the GFX, secondly it is not a replacement for the XT2, that will be the upcoming "XT3" Re your vlogging issue, why would you need such a large and relatively heavy camera??
@Firstmanphotography
@Firstmanphotography 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe I wasn’t as clear as I should have been. I did say it is the top of the range mirrorless camera, not the outright top of the range. I believe that is their medium format camera. I should have said it has been brought in to replace the xt2 at the top of the mirrorless range. For my vlogging camera I want a camera that does 4K, slo Mo, high quality and also has a flip screen. Such a camera does not yet exist that can become an infrared part of my other gear and lenses. This cam really close so I was disappointed.

The bigger size makes the selling point for mirrorless cameras a moot point. Might as well go full frame DSLR and get a better image quality from a bigger sensor.

Solution to the, apparently huge, vlogging issue is to just get a phone holder and mounting it to the hotshoe. Wont be perfect but you'll get a nice comp view using the app.

Buy a cheap compact camera with a flippy screen for your blogs, put a decent compendium hood on your lens to cut out the stray light from the front lens element and radically increase your image micro contrast and please don't shoot at f/16 when f/8 will give you sufficient depth of field as diffraction will soften your image!

I guess the Sony 7MIII won't become your main vlogging camera as well: it's got just a flipscreen which you can turn up to about 90 degrees and down for about 45 degrees and no turning to the left/right at all. However, for photography it is a very capable camera indeed.
@Firstmanphotography

Without testing it and having full knowledge i feel ill be more inclined to keep the Sony. With the full frame it's got a better chance of replacing my 5d and the Sony video features are top notch. I wouldn't use it for vlogging but it could fulfil several other video needs.

Nice real life review, I would be crazy happy with these weather conditions when visiting the Lake District :-) Cheers to this nice vlog (as usual!) and no i will not replace my 5DMKIII with this one, I am waiting for the news canon will one day bring and invest in lenses like a Tilt shift or 100mm macro cause the 5DMKIII is still capable for the job and since there is an A7RIII maybe a refurbisch A7RII with adapter might apear allthough I hope the 5DMKIV will sinc in price as well soon ;-)

Good to see you back online Adam. You said it could possibly be your vlogging camera if the features were a bit more appealing but looking at the price, is this not quite expensive for a vlog set up? Appreciate the review and nice images as well

Yes it is expensive. At the moment though I am using the 5D Mark IV for most of the footage and then switch over to the 800d to film myself. I'd like something that can do it all......great quality, 4k, slo mo, good focusing and a flip screen.

Hi Adam. I moved to the XT2 and 16-55mm & 50-140mm lenses from the Nikon D800e and usual heavy but quality lenses. I'm getting on in years 64 and was struggling with carrying heavy gear especially uphills. I did all the usual comparisons before the change over and to be honest the Nikon (full frame) did come out better BUT not by much and once you learn to slightly alter your sharpen workflow with the Xtrans files I couldn't tell the difference with my old eyes. I miss my dslr of course but sense had to prevail if I was to get to the places to take my landscapes. Long exposures are doddle with the 'T' 15 minute feature on the XT2. So for me so far so good. Great video Adam very informative. Jim

Nice review Adam. The Fuji looks like a nice camera. I too use the 5D Mark 4 and enjoy the dynamic range it offers along with the great focusing for video, things like that would stop me making the switch. However for the right person the Fuji would make a great choice.

Why would you compare Fujifilm's top X-Trans camera with the 6D II? I'm sure Fujifilm sees this as its alternative to the 5D IV. Before committing to Sony, do your due diligence on it's support. Also, ask yourself what you'd gain. I lot of people think mirrorless cameras are lighter. In truth, mirrorless camera systems are only lighter if they're APS-C, they're designed for APS-C lenses and equipped with APS-C lenses. Under those conditions, DSLRs too could be lighter.
@Firstmanphotography
@Firstmanphotography 6 жыл бұрын
I tried to compare it to the 5D Mark IV all the way through and to be honest it doesn't come close. I compared it to the 6D Mark ii because it basically the same price. When it comes to testing cameras the only thing im interested is what problems it solves for me and how it performs in the field. This is what I try summarise and show in my reviews.

Once you start using that weird Fuji portrait angled screen for landscapes or astro on a tripod you won't be able to go back. Incredibly useful. I also looked at Sony before slowly selling my Canon FF's & L glass but the Sony lenses are massive & very hefty for long hikes.

I finally have the H1 on order. I have the 18,27 and 35mm primes which I have from the Xpro1 deal all those years ago. I also have a Canon 60d with grip (no point selling as it's worth £150). I need a nice zoom lense for the fujifilm, perhaps the 16-55 as I can wait a year. But the question is what should I do with the 60d? Perhaps a 50mm 1.8 prime to keep the cost down.

Agree about the future. I'm not sure if they have CaNikon 'on the run' though. Nikon had a bad year, but Canon is still massive, and both of them are currently working on full frame mirrorless solutions that we'll see either at the end of this year or early next. Sony is definitely cutting into the pie in a major way, but I think CaNikon will probably respond with good equipment. The Canon M series is already started to get relevant; they just need a few more lenses to be taken seriously. But the sensor is there, and the dual pixel af is very good.

Looks a good camera but again flawed like my Sony with the non flip screen. Have both the A7R2 and A6300 which I can share my lenses between. However maybe sell up both for the new A7iii. Never had an issue vlogging without the flip screen to be honest. The new Sony looks a staggering camera for the money and with early reviews may beat your Canon in a lot of areas.

Why is everyone going on about video, why does every camera have to be vlogging compatible??? I try and make good still images, if I video anything it will be on my phone, therefore all the chatter in these KZbin vids about vlogging is pointless for me. What I what to know is does the IBIS work for general photography, if I am out and about on a photo walk taking pictures, will the IBIS help me get a better image, will it help reduce camera shake and give me more 'keepers', how does it work with older Fuji lenses. I have already worked out that an APS-C Mirrorless system is lighter than my FF Nikon, I have a small Fuji system for those days when I don't want to lug my Nikon gear around. What I really, really, really, would like to know is whether the XH-1 is worth investing in as a good general camera for a variety of photographic subjects, yet all I hear is whether Fuji is better than Sony or whether you should swap from Nikon or Canon to Mirrorless and if so should it be Fuji or Sony and which one is better than Nikon or Canon, oh hang on we are going round and round in circles!!! Could someone who can get a loan of this camera from Fuji or has this camera do a vid on whether the XH-1 is a good general purpose camera for lots of different subjects please. Thanks.

Thanks Martin, thats detailed. Lots of people care about video I think. Before too long more people will be shooting video than stills. To answer your question, it is a perfect all round camera for stills.......they pretty much all are these days. Image stabilisation isnt something I worry about with stills anymore. I just up my shutter speed and ISO.

No sir! I refer to an indefinite amount of people who seem to judge cameras based on the ability to flip that screen around. My comment was an overreaction to the sheer amount of youtube people crying about a non flippable screen on a camera which I personaly feel is primarily made for photographs and especially certain reviewers who I feel have zero clues (I don't claim to have more) about photography but make a drama out of the non flip screen. I edited my comment to be less offensive and rude. Still from my recent experienxe the is a certain connection between people complaining about a non flip screen and the ability of a cam to take great photos. Still you're a great reviewer. Sorry for the rudeness and have a nice day.

@@pr0toncat Lol. I really appreciate that. You're probably right that the flip screen is only required for video creators and probably only vloggers. That being said those tilt screen make me nervous and I am always afraid they are going to break. I have more confidence in the flip screens. Flip screens also do everything the tilt screens do and more. I definitely dont need a flip screen for my landscape work though.
