I often use my Mamiya7ii with the panoramic kit! I have the 43mm and the 80mm and i use them both for the format. Also love shooting without the mask to get the sprocket holes exposed

It's like two different worlds. GFX shots like feel like a cold post-apo future world, while Mamiya feels way more romantic, like from an old movie. But I actually like the Mamiya crop more, XPAN format often feels a bit too wide for me.

Films can have very high native resolutions, but about half of that is lost due to processing and lens quality (lenses performing best at certain apertures). Digital sensors can have pixels from 1.6 nm to 5 nm, which are selected to match the lens/optics or sensor size. Larger sensors, like the GFX (43x33) can take advantage of lower noise and light gathering of the larger 5 nm pixels. Better low light performance, less noise, and greater dynamic range can be seen in portraits and landscapes. I shot a landscape with 4x5 Vericolor Kodak film, 160 ASA. It was a 12 second exposure through a very sharp Japanese superwide. It may have been the processor's fault, but the grain prevented any print larger than 8x10, 11x14 really pushing the limit of grain taking over the image. It took ten years to afford a quality scan of the negative, and using Neat Image (an early noise reduction tool) to create a digital image file able to print 360 dpi grain-free images up to 40x20 inches . . . the grain and color noise gone without loss of sharpness. Film may measure as sharp, but loses detail through the lens, in the grain and dye cloud layers, through the enlarger lens, and finally limited by the paper it is printed on. Digital is a shorter route from lens to pixel size (x4 due to RGGB Bayer Filter), i.e., sensor size determining how much to enlarge or crop, and base l/mm, dpi, or ppi. So, which is better? Film or Digital? That XPAN format gives the GFX a run for the money, but 'pixel-peeping' the final prints with a loupe will be the final measure.

@@leonarddaneman810 Great post, thanks for sharing. The GFX resolves more detail than Kodak gold, but film handles light much better I think.

@@RH-adventure I have the Pentax 645z which uses the same SONY sensor as the GFX50 . . . you can see the superior tonality and sharpness compared to a OMD 20mgpxl.

I used to own both and sold the xpan, which maybe gives you a clue as to what I preferred. I would also agree that with the panoramic adapter in I almost always use it with the 50mm. You can always edit the colours on the film anyway, if I was printing those I would have cooled them down a lot with filters, so why not do that with the white balance when you scan if you want something more accurate.

The Mamiya 6 film images are soo much more than the GFX. I personally woudl have probably pushed the GFX images a little more in post BUT film really does have a dimension'ality to it without looking crunchy or crushed that is hard to do in digital. Especially with the higher resolution digital cameras I feel. Also Mamiya lenses are incredible and as good as the best of any brand. I had an Mamiya 645 AFDii that I shot almost exclusively with film and that kit lens it came with is awesome. I have a Mamiya 7ii and really need to get this adapter for it as I have the 50mm and your shots look great! Anyways my vote is obviously for the Mamiya film images over the GFX, Lol.

@@bvaccaro2959 Agree,I can push the GFX files much further. But before I developed the film I was kind of happy with them. Shows that shooting film can improve digital photography.

A better comparison is with a Mamiya 7 and the 135 adapter kit, which gives you the same 24x65 format as an Xpan.

@@mike747436 True, bur the same crazy price as the xpan, and no frame lines for panoramic which is a deal breaker for me. But I would try it if I could get my hands on one.

Last time I looked the xpan was at least as expensive as a Mamiya 7 if not more, and of course you get a top medium format camera too. There are frame line indications for 135 in both the internal viewfinder and the 2 external viewfinders for the wide angle lenses.
