I’ve seen your videos about not putting the wall board down into the pan. But why not bring the wall board down to the mud bed, mesh and thin set the seam there and then red guard? That gap there seems really counter intuitive. If you are water proofing properly, you shouldn’t be getting water down there in the first place.

Hey Bob, love your work. I do wonder if you ever had an issue of having water get behind the tile on the floor edges and lay in the trough below the wallboard and the edge of the pan. Even though it's waterproofed do you think it's an issue if water would get in there and just sit. Thanks for all your videos.

My belief is having a gap that would have air in it would allow for evaporation if it got through which I seriously don't think it would

@@StarrTile wouldn't it just pool back there and give issue to the wall studs? I do appreciate your videos and am starting on my walk in diy this week Also. Hello from fort bragg NC. I noticed that airborne sticker on your truck!
@StarrTile
@StarrTile 2 жыл бұрын
@@dianehachez8720 firstly I really don't think much moisture would get back there anyway because the water should shed off of the wall tile onto the floor and down to the drain, but even if a tad bit of moisture got back there as I said before, it has air to evaporate it, and the studs are covered by the pan liner so no it would not affect the studs... And yes, I was at Fort Bragg back in the day...3rd325

would it really matter if the wallboard sat on the mortar bed? I mean it’s all waterproofed anyways. Wondering your thoughts? Thanks Bob
@StarrTile

Yes if the bottom AND the back is waterproof then it wouldn't matter, but no 100% guarantee you can do that, PLUS I like my floor tile squarely inside that gap and grouted before wall tile overlaps it

I put 6" tape over the gap at the bottom of the board. 3" on board 3" on pan. Then red guard everything like you. Seals that gap. Only thing I do different than you.

Quick question Bob, What did you use behind the main niche wall? Just silicone? Also, would it be better to use durarock instead of drywall? Had some green left over but returned leftovers and got dura. Im gonna redgaurd everything so yeah just curious about your opinion. Great work! Thanks
@StarrTile
@StarrTile Жыл бұрын
I don't see what difference it makes to use durock, especially on a wall since walls are never the problem, and no matter what you use the niche and everything else should be waterproof before the tile anyway. The only time I use different products is if it makes the job better and in this case I don't see where it makes the job any better

With this method the water will saturate the thinset under the floor tile since the drain sits higher then the red guard and the water has no where to go (no weep holes). Thoughts? Will the thinset breakdown over time when completely saturated in water 100% of the time
@StarrTile
@StarrTile 2 жыл бұрын
Actually it's reverse, the tile sits higher than the drain..... Regardless once the pan is waterproof there is a little bit of thinset holding the tile, and yes that thinset potentially would be wet from taking a shower, however it is a small amount of thinset compared to the 200-300 plus pounds of mortar that you would normally have been saturated 100% 24/7. My assumption is that small amount of thin-set would dry out between showers.. given the two options and having torn out saturated pans over and over and over, I would rather have my option than the former. But regardless of what you choose to do whether it be a liquid topical membrane or a sheet membrane, everybody has moved toward the sealed system which basically this is.

@@StarrTile Yea but couldn't you figure out a nice way of making the drain flush with the pan or a hair below.? wouldn't that be the best of both worlds? I understand the tile will be higher but a slight more dramatic slope all around drain and with you tile cut at angle like you do around drain I think its do able. NO? Or on second thought a drain that has weep holes right under top edge that would be best.. I dont think good idea for water to pool around drain
@adde32332
@adde32332 Жыл бұрын
@@StarrTile First, thanks for the videos. This really helps homeowners and DIYers. Second, I believe you used to Redgard up to a foot from the drain, because you were still utilizing the mortar bed and pan liner underneath to evacuate water. Now you are still using a pan liner, but Redgard all the way up to the drain, essentially not relying on the pan liner. What made you switch over? In this situation would not siliconeing or Redgarding the area around the drain allow for the mortar to carry water down to the weepholes?
@adde32332
@adde32332 Жыл бұрын
@@clg_pro2009 I think that would be ideal. But he could also have not siliconed it, or Regarded up to the drain. That would allow the pan liner and mortar to wick the water down to the weep holes. Your thoughts on that?
