Rat Rods are hot! So, Joe and Mike explore the lifestyle and go on a mission to find the perfect Rat Rod body for our "Raunchy Rat". First, they visit the annual Street Rod Nationals in search of a chassis for their '29 roadster Rat Rod body. Then, back at the shop they load it with suspension, brakes and a steering box. After that, they show you how to channel the body to make it ride right on the frame before building and installing a vintage Ford Flathead motor, supercharger and transmission as Raunchy Rat gets closer to completion.
Then Joe and Mike finish the brakes and clutch, also creating a floorboard with road signs, installing some off-the-wall seats and finishing touches. A rat rod is never finished, so it seems. However, Joe and Mike finally put the finishing touches on their '29 Ford before Mike takes it to a local car show to blow people's minds.

Couple thoughts: 1: The title should be .. "How To Spend Way Too Much Building A Rat Rod"! 2: Finish the fab work before painting your chassis! 3: Shop for cheap used parts so that the finale cost won't be a LOT more than the finished product is worth! 4: Learn how to fab some Rat Rod parts .... especially a grill because that one sucks worse than anything ever sucked before. 5: That's not a 9 inch ... someone lied to you .... and you should know your rear ends before getting on TV and talking about them! 6: And last but most important: Watch Rat Rod Bob Builds before building your Rat Rod.

7. don;t bolt on $50,000 worth of brand new parts onto shit that has 50 plus years of rust on it, I mean damn.... noone doing that at home. even the novice builder id gonna ATLEAST hit that shit with a wire brush and a cheap can of flat black/clear coat wal-mart paint.... Atleast TRY clean it up and make it look good. It can still look rusty without actually BEING rusty.

@jalopyranch6859 3 жыл бұрын
Its a street rod with a rusty body, you guys just don't get it, sorry, "A" for effort but real ratrods aren't built with store bought parts and a shop like a ladies kitchen, they are scrounged from junk piles and built on a greasy garage or even a dirt floor by talented backyard engineers

I think Welder Up is in a class by itself. The stuff they build that you don't see is better than the cars they show. Some of their rides border on clown cars. Agreed he does have some pricy cars. I'm kind of a purist, rats are built buy working guys in their garage. Build for fun.

See, that's not what rat rod means anymore. Like every other automotive fad, it is exploited by the rich and TV. It is completely contrary to the origins. Rat rods were just cars built with either money or motivation as the limiting factors.

This ain’t a rat rod. It’s just part numbers that you buy. This is disgusting a little bit. Nobody built it - they assembled part numbers.

Got to love these sponsored shows right where they have a team of pros all the time and money in the world because it's a big advertisement for tools and parts... It's neat to see something done the right way. on the other hand sometimes the jokes get stale and the presenters aren't the best personalities so the home built DIY vlog is also pleasurable.

I get it "Rat Rods" are built with used parts but this is how you pay the bills on a TV show like this. When advertisers are putting up 100% of the money you have to appease them with promoting their products.

Nice rat rod style Car. But I would have to agree with others here that I true rat rod it is not. Kudos to the original lads that put together What they could with what they had and couldn't even afford paint but would have loved to be able to. These cars were and still are entertaining Personally though I've seen enough beer bottles, skulls, and rubber rats To Last me a lifetime.

I think the scrap body steel is worth more than regular scrap steel. It’s got something to do with steel made before nuclear weapons testing. The aerospace industry has a great need for non radioactive steel for special parts of aircraft. That’s why old navy ships have a higher scrap value.

Top Tip: Save your money until you find something you like, then change it to suit your taste. It's a lot cheaper in the long run. I would definitely NOT run a flathead. They are prone to overheat and be underpowered. Even a blown flathead makes as much power as a stock sbc. I used a '64 283 for a fraction of the costs of their flathead. My trans was a Muncie M-21.

Not quite a "rat rod" in my book, as many others have said here. Sure up top things like the tractor grille and hood, the floor and the way fuel gets added, maybe has that kinda look. But, it's pricey under all that rust. Had it been done on a true budget or hacked together like a true rat, I'd like it better.
