My animal shelter I work at, has one of these. But with green LEDs and the card slot (it's bypassed btw, so you can just start it without anything, at anytime)

How did you keep the lid open when it was running?

On the right, at the rear of the machine, there is a thin metal lever underneath the panel. Depending on the setup, you can sometimes reach back there with your hand and hold the lever down. In this case, I held it down with a piece of cardboard (which I removed after the cycle).
