I like how the 2011 Carrier started up at almost the same time as the Goodman

That's the first time I've seen a central heat pump that stops the compressor when switching over to defrost. Very neat. Thanks for the video.

Mine has ice on the unit and it goes into defrost mode but it doesn’t completely melt off all the ice it only last about a minute in defrost mode, i called a a/c guy and told to use emergency heat supposedly because heat pumps don’t function well when it very cold
@Diy-For-Life2 жыл бұрын
So my furnace has an option to use gas heat to defrost the heat pump. Not sure how that works.

That sounded real nice! I'm glad you finally caught the cycle, it seemed a little stubborn to defrost.

Defrosting happened after I cleaned up my condenser fins with pressured water inside out and left water inside the bottom of unit because their is no exit hose in the bottom. Is my situation normal too with the white odorless smoke? Or it only happens when there is ice? I freaked out and turned off the units:)

Thanks, you saved me a call. First year with my Goodman hp and I was concerned about that noise.
@HVACAdventures4 жыл бұрын
Yeah all heatpumps will usually do this unless it’s broken it’s just to prevent the coils from freezing up or else it’ll have trouble heating and more trouble down the line

Same. I thought my unit was burning up when the fan wasn’t spinning and steam was rolling off of it 😅

Is it normal for the air handler to keep blowing air during this cycle? Or maybe it's a timing mismatch. Anyways thanks for this video I was pretty sure my unit was breaking and that it exhausted all the refrigerant or something.
@HVACAdventures Жыл бұрын
Yes it’s completely normal for this to happen as the air handler is commonly paired with an electric strip heat that will heat when the outdoor unit is unable to heat the house (defrost or too cold outside)
@pogtuber5146 Жыл бұрын
@@HVACAdventures ahh, my auxiliary is hooked up to a propane furnace though. I think it might be a bug in the thermostat, maybe it doesn't know the heat pump is going through its own defrost process and just sees it as "on" and continues moving air.

They have a 30/60/90 minute interval switch on the board. Every one I have seen comes with it set for every 30 mins. Crazy. I switched mine to 90. The problem is they go into defrost whether they need to or not, I think some more expensive units have an air flow sensor on the coil that would actually be looking for a drop due to ice build up and initiate defrost when needed only. I like the Goodmans, parts are easy to get I just hate the defrost when it doesn;t need it, it costs you more money and its wear and tear on the unit.

I wonder if this will survive in Canada at -20°c ?
@HVACAdventures4 жыл бұрын
Nick Crate probably not that’s pretty cold it make work it’ll probably freeze over a lot and slow down heating until it would stop heating

Wait until NG prices in Canada sky rocket, heat pumps are slowly creeping in as primary heat source down to around -8C and then switch over to natural gas burner. As the price of NG goes up that switchover point will keep getting colder. As far as the units holding up though there are no issues, most can even still heat at -20C, the COP just drops off and natural gas still by far cheaper. I believe by 2030 you’ll only need a COP of around 2.5 at -20C to equal the hiked natural gas prices.

No frost at start of defrost set for 90 minutes?
@HVACAdventures4 жыл бұрын
It’s an interval type defrost so if it just reads a cold temperature it’ll defrost and the time is set on 90 minutes I think I don’t remember if it was that or around an hour
@jeffhamula3 жыл бұрын
How do you quiet it? Anything you can do?
@HVACAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Only thing I can think off is a compressor blanket which is an insulated cover that goes over the compressor to block most of the sound
@DW-rw4yc4 жыл бұрын
Mines make that noise. Do I need to have it checked?
@HVACAdventures4 жыл бұрын
No this is completely normal it’s just defrosting ice off of the unit to prevent any issues in heating
@JustinMentionedIt4 жыл бұрын
@@HVACAdventures how does it know there’s ice on the unit? Does it have internal thermostat to tell what the outside temps are? Or how? Mine is brand new I don’t think anything is wrong with it I was just outside one day and realized it runs all day every day it seems but I guess this is normal and the reason I’m here is I wanna know how it works, why it works, and all that
@HVACAdventures4 жыл бұрын
@@JustinMentionedIt I’m not the greatest at explaining this but there’s a defrost board hooked up to the compressor and the fan motor and a few other sensors and once the run time is reached at certain intervals it’ll check the temperature and if it’s below a certain temperature it’ll kick into defrost to melt off any ice that may have formed on the coils. Hope this helps you can look more into it by looking up how an interval defrost cycle works!
