I know this is an older video. But I have had terrible luck with units. And just want to say thank you. I was afraid of this noise as I didn't remember hearing it last winter (though that could just be me) and you displaying the exact sound I was hearing and explaing it made me feel better. Newer Goodman & Amana units have "SMART Shift" Defrost systems that turns off compressor when reversing valve shifts from heating to cooling and back after defrost is complete. This is information for the younger HVAC techs Mike because I know you are a pro with many years HVAC experience like myself.Keep up the great videos. I wish I had time to record and edit and make some videos to post on You tube but just to busy. I love it when customers call and say that their outdoor heat pump unit is on fire because they see steam coming out the top of unit and mistake it for smoke lol. I have customers video record units with cell phone when they hear a noise that we cannot find at time of service. I had a Rheem heat pump outdoor unit about 18 years ago that would make a noise between 3-4 AM every night in heating season and I had customer record it and I was able to determine that it was a defective defrost board that was cycling compressor & reversing valve off and on for about 15 mintutes and was very loud and neighbors were complaining lol. Its gonna be -10-15 degrees windchill tomorrow night in Baltimore Maryland and heat pumps will be defrosting like crazy lol.

we have the same multimeter tester, had it for over 10 years and never fail, also just installed a new Rheem heat pump and is doing the same noise from the outdoor fan motor but is kind of normal and nothing wrong with it, but customer wont understand much since we transition from gas furnace to a heat pump system. Nice video and very self explained.

I am sure they slept through 1000 defrosts in the past and then heard one particularly loud shift which does happen. It's a great opportunity to tell them about units with variable speed motors and inverters that don't make those kinds of noise even in defrost. You might be surprised how many "budget" people will spring for low noise and improved comfort but are immune to the "higher seer" line. Pair it with a 10 year parts and labor that requires PMs and everyone does ok.

I posted the reply below but if you listen at 3:58- 4:03, the groaning sound is what our new carrier makes , and it is much louder than this one , you can hear it outside and throughout the house, in the lower level of the house , where the lines run, it is very loud. Even my neighbor has commented on it and they are almost 50 feet away. Ive had several heat pumps / air conditioners in previous homes (one a carrier for 10 years) and dont recall it being so loud , actually dont recall it making that sound at all. Any replies as to if this normal are appreciated.

The issue probably is the bearings in the fan. They need lubrication and probably a motor replacement. Here's a video I made in case it helps others.

It could be after it runs for awhile the bushing start making noise. Or maybe when it's in heating and the condenser coil starts to freeze they hear the condenser fan motor starting to cavitate due to the ice blocking the air flow. As always just an idea.

The noise is the Wiring harness to the electric fan. There will be a metal clamp that holds it to the top, it is loose and vibrating.

The noise was the bearing in the motor. When they got hot it made the noise.

Wish I had you diagnosing mine right now. Loud noise with hospice mom in law in the bed. But rattles the whole wall. Every 10 mins to 15 mins. I gotta do something. But heat guy just treated me like I'm stupid. And basically told me nothing he can do. Soooo,,, ,here I am.

Sometimes the fan blades will get a hairline crack and cause that noise. They are hard to see but can cause that.

That noise is the shaft, reposition the fan blades drop it down 1/2 inch and that noise will go away

Is it normal for it to go into defrost several times a day (like 10 at list) when temperatures are around 30?

It can do that if it runs long enough. If it is set to say 30 min and the systems has to run all day to hold the temp. Every 30 min's it checks to see if the sensor is closed it will go into defrost if the sensor is calling. Most defrost boards has a timer you can set like 30 60 90 min's if you feel it is going into defrost to often look to see if you can set it to a higher setting.

Pls help!: Those w heat pumps &/or knowledge.. does it make an “ultra sonic vibration radiating out sound around 3-7am? Our neighbors vibrates our entire bedroom (maybe oh 8-14ft away small side yard) every night from 3-7 at night & never used to. At this point we’re wondering if it’s indeed the heat pump or something else since there is 2 or 3 fan like things they have along our fence line with them 6ft from our bedroom & bed headboard wall. Pls help w what this could be. We don’t want to be bad neighbors but the sound is such a nuisance & we have never had any relationship w this neighbor as they never talk to anyone in the neighborhood & always park in their garage & stick to themselves & never go outside in backyard or anything. It’s pretty weird all around.

Mine sounds like a dump truck engine braking in my back yard. I haven’t been able to catch what stage of activity it’s in when it happens but the noise goes from a higher pitch to a lower pitch, literally like what an engine braking sounds like, and almost as loud. It sounds like the compressor was going and is grinding to a stop, not starting up like is in this video. I had them come out and get them to reproduce it but it wouldn’t make THE noise that it makes about 30 times a day (and night). For them it sounds like this, a normal defrost cycle. It does something else, randomly. And it’s loud as all get out. They dismissed me as overreacting. I’m like I JUST paid an insane amount of money for the variable speed high seer specifically so it would be quieter than my last unit and that noise is WAY louder than my old unit you just replaced and wakes me up 5 times a night out of a sound sleep.

Maybe somebody can help me, a week ago I came home after dark and my Goodman was sounded like a vibration intermittent, I have a thermometer in the kitchen supply to watch the temp. I checked the unite outside and couldn't feel the vibration when it did it like the fan or something. The thermometer on the supply said 65 degrees . House was cool. I turned off the heat and set it to emergency heat to warm up the house. After checking this heat pump for several days and using the heat strips mostly I've concluded that when its in the 30s and 40s the heat pump works as normal but below 32 or so it seems to not be working like its supposed to. It was installed in 2005. And have no problems in till now. I've checked it several times and seems to stop working when its below 32. One time while in defrost it did not do that swoosh, sound when changing from defrost to heat mode. I'm thinking it might be the reversing valve sticking in between? Sometimes.. sorry to be long winded.

Check to be sure the heat strips come on when in defrost.

@@Powlashvac they work and work well, it was 14 this morning I locked out the compressor at 30 in case I wasn't home to manually set to aux heat. When in defrost the heat strips do work because the heat actually warms up better. Could it be low on gas? I've not had time to just sit and watch it to see if its a defrost fault or something else. When its making this noise it makes, I felt the line sets and both were cold, and the air out of the supply was 65. Compressor sounded like it was under no load. I haven't checked the Amp draw yet. I'm.not a HVAC tech but I have been a apprentice and worked on several commercial and home units but its been a long while. Im thinking a bad reversing valve or sticking one ,or bad compressor. I cannot find my gauges to check gas.

Heat pumps are AWFUL. My neighbor has one and it prevents me from sleeping. WHY WOULD ANYONE PUT A HEATING UNIT IN THEIR BACKROOM TO BOTHER THEIR NEIGHBOR WITH NOISE POLLUTION? It seems selfish to me.
