Ha, I am 70 and still have my dad's old vise grips....don't know how old they are, but they work great......good video and well explained ...you got my sub for that.... I had to replace the coils on my horizontal Kohler Command sp27hp which is in a Toro Z Master. This was at the start of the pandemic, and no one would work on anything for you....did it in a barn stall using a headlight, and dang what a tedious job to lean in and get access. I did manage to talk to a mechanic by phone who told me to be sure to set to .010 using a metal feeler as business cards can vary too much. It is actually recommended to remove the entire engine to get access, but I had no place and equipment to do that. Now the same mower is starting to have some bogging when turning uphill and I wonder if the valves or a head gasket might be the problem....I have kept the head clean of debris as you explained to help dissipate heat.....BTW, I think you should recommend replacing both....going to cost more later if not, and most reasonable folk will understand that...if not, the ball is on their side.

Gotta let the customer make the call on replacing both or just one. Reminds me of that old commercial line " You can pay me now or you can pay me later." Nice job on the vid and explaining the process!

Great video! I may lean toward just replacing the one coil since the dirt seemed to be the culprit and the other side looked OK. Need to tell customer to clean as part of regular maintenance or else they will be back for another coil…or worse! Thanks for all you do with your videos.

I tell my customers that it is cheaper to do both now and there is no guarentee if he choses to do only one. Thanks for the great video.

It is best to replace both coils at the same time even though the other is not bad yet. All ways let your customers know this is the best thing to do because two days from now you could be back in there replacing it. I know it's a gamble either way. If I were a customer I would feel better having both new ignition coils.

The customer would have no idea about how clogged up that cylinder was unless he took of the shroud and thats not a normal maintenance job. that repair probably saved the customer hundreds of dollars if you didnt find the clog when you did the repair . Great job

Glad I came across this video. Had a cub cadet with a blown engine and bought another cub with a running engine to replace. The running engine had 2 new coils in it and the PO had cut the grounding wires and relied on the fuel solenoid to kill the engine. I rewired it correctly and lo and behold it would not run. If I disconnected the ground wire it would run on that cylinder. I replaced the coils with the older style from the blown engine and it operated fine. Could it be that the diodes are going bad or could it be the coils were bad. They did have very weak spark with the tester and I know the coils were exposed to high heat because the engine was very dirty.

I work on these for welding..linclons and millers. I was told they could run 5000 hours before an overhaul. Ch 23s and ch25s. When one side went gone I would just replace the other side as well. Company didnt care.😅 But we had some machines hitting ten thousand hours...

Thanks for your video(s). I have a Kohler CH25S 25hp Kohler v-twin on a John Deere Ztrak m665. It cut off while mowing with no obvious warnings. It would not start back. I sprayed starter fluid in it and it fired with a knocking engine noise. I didn't try anything else but if I have gave you enough info, what would your opinion be based on what I told you? I did notice that it had a new oil leak from the valve cover seal on oil filter side of engine. Thanks in advance.

I would definitely replace the second coil if it was mine, but give the customer the option and price.

I have a used craftsman with a Koehler 17 HP when I got it it was rigged with a kill switch because the motor won’t shut off at low throttle. Plus the mower will bog after cutting for a little while. Could that be coil related?

I have the same mower but has a governor problem. It runs wide open. I cannot find any governor videos on that particular engine. I have adjusted it every way I could imagine and nothing helps. I'm guessing the gear inside of the engine is bad. Any help would be appriciated. Thank you!
