Personally, my earliest memory was when I was a toddler in my high chair eating a boiled egg when I decided that I didn’t like egg. I have not changed that opinion in the fifty-odd years since. So my preferred cooked breakfast would be bacon, sausage (Lincolnshire or Cumberland for preference), black pudding (preferably the old fashioned kind that is like a sausage curled in a horseshoe, split longitudinally before frying), mushrooms and either fried bread (a traditional English staple that seems to be much less common these days) or hash browns.

Cowboy method, Scottish style. I fry the sausages (links and square) and the bacon (smoked streaky) first though and then let them stay warm under the grill while I cook all the other stuff like, black pudding, fruit pudding, egg, beans, tomato (fresh sliced, not tinned) and mushrooms. Then fry some bread while I'm plating everything else up and making the tea. I deliberately left out the haggis, simply because it is mingin' 😂

I used to be in the navy and we had a dish called “Train Smash”. It was basically the breakfast leftover sausage, bacon (both chopped up), beans and tinned tomato. If mushrooms were on the menu then they would go in too. Just warm the mix back up, fry a couple of eggs to put on top and you get the best of all worlds in a mouthful. It’s the breakfast version of a stew. Train Smash forever!!!!!!

@@eddiebirdie1545 Hope that you enjoy. Don’t be afraid to make it your own according to taste ie: ketchup, tabasco, maybe grated cheddar on top. Just don’t put the eggs in with the main mix however you want to cook them. Then again it’s your preference buddy. It’s a delicious and versatile dish. There is a vid on KZbin about it but he made it look like vomit! He was raving about it though like it was the best thing he ever had. He had scrambled eggs in with it and left out the sausage which hurt my soul but each to their own. It becomes a personal preference like how we like our tea and coffee. Edit: Recommend cooking the meat in the oven before adding to the mix. I’ve only ever known it to be made from breakfast leftovers bacon and sausage-wise, not cooked from scratch by adding raw meat to the beans and tomato mix.

Eggs, bacon, sausage, black puddin, fried beans are perfect, hash browns, a slice of fried bread, a couple of pieces of buttered toast, for a bacon buttie, brown sauce, and a nice cup of tea. Breakfast of champions! Tomatoes and mushrooms are okay, but not compulsory. As teenagers after clubbing, we went to a cafe that did all the above plus a lamb chop and roast potatoes and a slice of fried spam! It was a mountain of food, just the job after a night on the lash. Most of the ingredients are cheaper if you use shops here like heron foods, you can get 3 cans of Branston baked beans ( the best beans in my view) for £1.20, a pack of smoked or unsmoked bacon for £1 with 5 rashers, six eggs for 69p and a full size warburtons loaf for £1.25. Most unhealthy food is relatively cheap in the UK compared to a lot of countries. I was amazed back in 1996 we went to New York on holiday and I remember paying a dollar for a can of coke which worked out at about 62p but in the UK it was about 40p a can, though McDonald’s was about the same price but your servings were a lot bigger than the UK’s.

I suppose it varies in different regions bit I've only ever seen toast at those hotel breakfast bar things, in homes it's always bean (😀) fried bread. And again hotels seem to use the tinned tomatoes. I prefer the real thing but don't mind the tinned ones too much (and I fry them at home too!) Black pudding is a strange one personally, I think I have a deep psychological problem when I think about one of the ingredients (yes, you guessed it, the blood) but strangely if I'm given it on a plate I will eat it (but have never ever bought it). I hadn't thought of substituting haggis. As another tasty option try White Pudding- there's a few variations with the Scottish being different to the Irish versions. The only English supermarket I've seen it in is Morrisons (and it's different again). No blood in White Pudding. And if you look hard you can get red pudding too. Yum, tum rumbling.

In some parts of S Wales, especially near the sea, a "full Welsh" might include cockles and laverbread (puréed seaweed), which are fried in the oil left in the pan after cooking the bacon, eggs and sausages. Optionally, you can fry some finely diced bread with the cockles to make little "seafood croutons", which taste great and give the whole thing an interesting texture.

Fried or fresh tomatoes, cherry or full. Mushrooms. Minus- Get rid of the black pudding. Lastly, and this is a golden run. When you cook your beans, or if you put beans on toast, put a big knob of butter on or under the beans, and make sure it melts into the beans. Nuff said!

Ooo - going in early with the black pudding might be a mistake. It's already cooked, so in theory all you need to do is warm it up - suppose it depends if you like it really crisped and slightly burnt. This sounds good, but it's missing mushrooms and a bit of wilted spinach for me.

Woe betide anyone who dared to stab it and let the yolk run out before she was ready! Also appreciated your mention of my birthplace - it is famous for many things, not least black pudding, Sir Robert Peel, John Charnley, the doctor who pioneered the first hip replacement surgery . . . and Victoria Wood went to school there, too. (Random fact for you - at least 3 residents of Bury were described on the 1911 census as "black pudding makers".)

I'm not used to having a large breakfast but when I do it I like to go all out. As a caution for American tourists if you're only in the UK for 2 days or a long weekend don't have a Full English!! I know we aren't exactly known for our health choices especially here in Texas but the Full English you get at a pub or restaurant is an ungodly large amount of salty, carby, fatty goodness. If you're not accustomed to eating this much in the morning then you're going to feel bloated and sluggish until well into the afternoon. You'll be gassy too! This probably isn't how you want to feel for several hours while your out sightseeing and endlessly walking around!! I've lived in the UK and quite honestly the Full English is best experienced on a Saturday or Sunday morning when you can go back to your home or hotel and nap for several hours. Also I'd recommend HP sauce especially for the eggs and tomato.

@@ulysses2162 A1 to me is a bit less sweet than HP. I mean this in a good way to my taste. I prefer HP Sauce to the others. Here in Texas at least we can get HP in our normal grocery store at right about the same price as American bottled brown sauces and it's very popular to those who know about. Same thing goes with PG Tips and Twinings Tea. These are also in most larger Texas grocery stores.

Hi Alanna. I am English of Irish descent. My ideal FEB would be 2 Shropshire sausages, 3 smoked back bacon, 2 fried eggs, (not runny yolk) 2 uncooked tomatoes, 1 fried white bread and 2 slices brown bread + butter. I don't like beans and black pudding but cover everything with a LOAD of black pepper. Of course this must include a cup (or 2) of TyPhoo tea to wash all that grease down :)

Go to Morrisons or Sainsburys and pick up some soda farls, potato farls and a white pudding, along with the ingredients of a full English and you have an Ulster fry. I like the soda farl sliced horizontally and then fried, some people cut it into triangles and then cut it horizontally before frying. I like it my way because you can eat the white of the fried egg with some of the fry up and end up with the yoke spread over your soda to enjoy with the rest of your breakfast.
@allenwilliams1306
@allenwilliams1306 3 жыл бұрын
Toast no, fried bread yes! Beans have no part in the “full English” because they are not generally fried, but you seem to have gone ahead and fried them anyway, so have sort of justified your inclusion of them. The whole point is that everything is done in the same pan, and, if you do it properly (ending with frying the bread) you don't even have to wash it up, because the bread soaks up all the delicious grease and wipes it clean. Leaving out large flat mushrooms and halved fried tomatoes in unforgivable, though. Best Welsh breakfast is laverbread fried with bacon and cockles, by the way. PS stop using “medallions” - all they do is cut the fatty bits off ordinary bacon, and charge you for it. You want the fatty bits for liquefying and to soak into the fried bread in any event.

Full English with no beans ? You know that's blasphemy you would never get away with that in any B&B or cafe across the land . As for frying the beans , I don't actually mind that as they take up the flavour from the bacon and sausages , but I wouldn't do it at the same time as that would take the little crispy bits off the meat

my hints? pierce the sausage skins with a fork so the fat renders out a bit then put in the bacon to get even more tasty fat, fry the egg in that then use the pan to fry the bread (or potato scone) then fry the bread instead of toasting so it sucks up the flavor then plate up and add the beans as they will heat up fast if you want mushrooms put them in b4 the bread as the liquid will go into the bread as well(same for tomatoes)

A full English is made from whatever is available at the time so individual ingredients flit in and out depending on availability with the proviso that sausage, bacon,egg and beans are always there. I also have a ritual which as far as I know is unique to me. I always save the bread, egg and bacon till the end and make a bacon and egg sandwich out of them to finish up with. So satisfying.

The easiest way to cook a Full English is cheat. Specifically the sausages take ages compared to everything else so cook them first and put them in a ceramic oven dish in the top oven on a low heat. If you have hash browns do them before the bacon. Then do the bacon and bung it on top of the sausages. Beans can just be zapped in the microwave at the last minute. Black pudding next then eggs last so they don't go like rubber. Put the toast on at the point you start the eggs (I have a 4 slice toaster).

Adding the beans to the pan is a stroke of genius, I'm guessing the sauce mixed with the meat fat to create something truly delicious. I am a strong advocate for fried mushrooms. And, adding a potato waffle to the mix, with the fried egg placed on top when served, is an amazing alternative to other potato-based accompaniments.
