I've had my KME for almost 3 years now, and never thought to pinch the jaws first before snugging it... Now, I haven't had much trouble getting most blades set in the jaws, but that little trick would have saved some grief on a few rare exceptions. Glad KZbin recommended this video to me. Thanks for putting this out there!

I've owned the kme for a few years and it's a reliable sharpening system. I prefer to have it mounted on the base because it just feels a bit more accurate. Mind you my base is an old 1/2 inch drillbit and chuck of wood I had laying around.

Great video, bravo. I’ve had this system for a month maybe since the last time I asked you what accessories I should get along with the KME. I held off on the 9 lapping tape and the strop with the diamond juice lol. Instead I got the base and the 100 grit stone. I do have a strop so it’s not like I’m finishing with the stone. The KME stop will be my next purchase. I’m trying to walk not run if you know what I mean. Anyway I’ve done 4 knives so far and I love this sharpener. I had the lansky so this KME was really familiar in a way, plus I actually do know how and what to do as far as the process of sharpening. Thanks to you though for answering my questions and making these videos, it really helps. I apologize for the long comment but I had to let you know I appreciate people like you. Thanks again.

photag216 you should have no problem now. I do recommend getting a really coarse stone like the 50 or 100 grit if you plan on sharpening the more premium steels, they are a time saver. I just finally got the stropping set and lapping film set , that takes it to a whole new level (PANTERA) enjoy the kme friend.

Very informative. I ended up buying the wicked edge go system over this but now I wish I would have bought the KME. I love the WE system but the KME seems like it would have been better for me. Live and learn. Sharpening is also a hobby in itself, as much a journey as collecting the knives themselves for me.

Thanks- am writing this as I wait for my KME to arrive 8/2022. Good visual explanation. If this is not mentioned for full flat grinds in the KME instructions, then they are goofballs for not including it. When I saw the title, my thought was "oh no, full flat will be impossible with the KME", but then you went on to say it'll work just fine and showed why. Two other points to consider: 1) The rubber pieces also give some relief for the widest part at the spine, which helps the clamp do its work. 2) Even when the edge is mounted equally in hopes of a uniform width bevel, many get a widening bevel near the tip. This is usually because the material near the tip is deliberately made thicker for strength. Pushing the tip end in a little more toward the vertical post will help reduce this phenomenon. I'd heard to 'pinch' the clamp before this, but you showed where and why quite a bit better.. 🙂

This is exactly what I have been searching for! I have a few PM2s that I have relegated to the drawer because I couldn’t find an acceptable way to hold that blade. Now I just have to hope this isn’t a crazy expensive system, otherwise I am basically going to not use my Spydercos anymore
@bulldog71ss335 жыл бұрын
The KME is not cheap, but it's worth it. It'll run about $200~ If that's out of the budget then I would suggest looking into a Spyderco Sharpmaker for around $70

Just got the KME, thought I'd start on an Esee Izula that needed a touch up. Kept getting a lot of wiggle and movement. Even with the pen knife jaws it was a bit touchy with the full grind on a short knife with a full belly. I'll have to give it another try after watching this vid.

I’ve had an issue sharpening my Benchmade Barrage in a Lansky (I can’t get it centered well with the swedge, it like to walk free too easily). Will I have a similar issue with the KME? Any tricks for me to prevent that? I’ve considered taking it apart and clamping closer to the pivot section of the blade, where is flat, but I’m concerned it will effect the bevel angle overall.
@keithwilliams86614 жыл бұрын
With the KME system you don’t align the blade with the spine. Align with the bevel, otherwise the angle will change from one end to the other as you sharpen.

Some people have stated that when the diamond stones are new, they can leave behind some diamonds in the dust that collects between your blade and the stone carrier, resulting in scratched blades since they get dragged across the blade when you're making your strokes. Have you found this to be true, and if so, how do you avoid it happening? Thanks!
@KnifeKrazy.4 жыл бұрын
Yes. I Definitely find this to be true. On lower grits like 50,100 and 140. I would take a junk piece of steel/blade and get all the loose diamonds off. It shouldn’t take long.
@poopagore3 жыл бұрын
I'm confused. I set my knife up just like this but my stone is hitting the knife clamp before it can hit the blade.... I need to mess with it more I guess
@alisadigout56175 жыл бұрын
Clamped in the way you have it would give a varying angle along the blade edge....would it ? New to sharpening

I wonder if this works on ZT 0452. If you look at the design of that blade, you'll see what I mean. I have this knife and it is hard to clamp it down. I think I have to do freehand sharpening.
@KnifeKrazy.4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. It’s had to sharpen knives with full swedges like that. You could probably get it to work but it’s not ideal
@efrainperez82735 жыл бұрын
So do you still draw a line from tip to end and line up jaws on that line or line up jaws with spine like in this video??
@KnifeKrazy.5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Draw a line from heal to tip. I put the blade in the jaw this way just to show the jaw movement. I wouldn't sharpen it this way.
