Thomas Voss , I couldn't agree with you more. I've been a free hand knife sharpener for 55 years. I've learned just volumes from these to guys in the last few days on sharpening with a KME system. They've also cost me about $450 in equipment but hell I know it will be enjoyable.

Yep. He’s dead accurate. I just don’t understand why the instructions that came with the KME does not tell you to do it this way...because he’s right, and what he’s saying works perfectly. It’s like he figured something out before the guys that made the actual sharpener did.

Just so you know, as long as you zero your angle cube on the base, it doesn't matter if your table is crooked. If you zero it on the base and want a 20 degree bevel, the knife will already have whatever tilt the table had and you just need to set the kme to a 20 degree angle.

Two more pieces of information: 1) You've now measured the angle of the stone holder to the base, but you haven't made sure the blade is exactly parallel to the base, so the bevel angle may be different than what you're seeing on the angle cube. First, use a thin piece of steel in-between the flat on the blade and the angle cube, and make sure the blade is ZERO, or you won't have an accurate bevel angle reading. If the flat of the blade is perfectly parallel to the base, then no worries, otherwise, you're a little off. 2) Most blade designers thicken the blade near the tip to make it stronger. Even if you mount the blade nice and even like you've shown (good explanation 🙂), the bevel width may still grow because the material thickness is increasing toward the tip.

Yes very thankful for yr knowledge, passing it down. Much respect! I also just got a thin sheet of stainless, to I hope make my own version of yr magnetical stone holder top for the angle cube finder. Just hope I can cut it half as well as you, smoothing out the sides! Made my own base and turned out very well, but used a old drill and vice with various files to fine sandpaper to smooth out the bolt I used to smooth out where I cut the head off. Was so happy when I did that, finished my base and actually tuned out well! But yes, thank you for sharing yr skills, they are passed on for sure!

KnifeKrazy I've gotta tell you: you're explanations/demonstrations are solid gold. I'm getting better using the KME & can work up a ridiculously sharp blade. Your techniques when applied to my Lansky have made it twice the system it was to start with, so I guess I've improved a bit too!

There's an arc of constant distance from the bearing. One wants the blade edge to be as close to this arc as reasonable. This is a bit different from the straight line drawn on the blade since shifting left or right changes the displacement from the arc. But the basic idea is correct. Distance from edge to bearing should be close to constant for a constant apex angle.

I agree the method works, however, with or without the line drawn from heel to tip, and the knife mounted parallel with the line, the distance is not the same from the heel to the bearing and the tip to the bearing.

You have to keep working the smaller bevel side until it equals out the bevels.

The tip to heel line really helped, thank you for the video! Does the left-to-right centering of the clamp matter as well? I assume if you clamp really close to the heel, even if you're parallel to that heel-tip line, you'll have the same problem since now the tip is further from the pivot than the heel, throwing off the triangle you were talking about?

Not really. I have 2 different brands and they both work fine. Go to Amazon and type in Angle cube. $20-$30 range.

Love your vids. Maybe a bit off topic but do you think an knife with thin stock thickness(0.09") and low angle (15 per side) can be sharpened with standard jaws? Or should I get the pen knife jaws? Blade is about 1" wide.

Great info. Guessing this would also apply to wicked edge, would you set a blade up like this on an edge pro table as well for simplicity or would it be better to turn the knife as you get to the tip? The traditional way would be to move the knife so to keep the part you're grinding parallel to the edge of the table but I see people just holding the in one position.

No. Clamp it in the middle and roll with it. You don’t want to unclamp it and start again. You will not find the right angle.

Love this video; it definitely helps a new KME owner out. Once you have your blade lined up correctly (equal distance from the bearing) does it matter how deep you seat it in the clamp or does seating depth only come into play to make sure the blade is adequately secured?

I sure don't. Do the sharpie test to find the angle. Put the 1500 diamond on the KME. Clamp the blade in and move the angle up or down until you find the factory angle.

Sometimes when I sharpen a knife I end up with the center part of the blade tries to make a recurve. Sometimes I notice it where I clamp too. What am I doing wrong?

So knives that have a belly or a bigger gap when you have the heel to tip line are the ones you want to line the clamp up with the heel to tip line and knives that have a relatively straight heel to tip you just want to line up normally (straightest part of edge parallel to the clamp) correct?

The Rat has a big swoop on the front of the blade. on that one just put it in the best you can.
