Thanks! I'm competing with myself to grow more than I did last year. I had never heard of ground cherries until last year; but now I will always grow them. They have such a unique sweet flavor that you can't get anywhere. It's not too late to grow them this season.

Thanks for the info about the ground cherries. I looked them up and they sound tasty. Any suggestions on where to find the plants? I’m in Rockwall but can go any direction. You are an inspiration. My herbs and veggies are in grow bags but wanting to add raised beds soon.

I've never seen ground cherry plants in stores but you may find them on Facebook marketplace; that's where I sold my extra seedlings and there were other sellers as well. If you don't find any I'd be happy to drop some seeds in the mail for you; I have plenty. Last year I direct sowed mine and they did fine.

Thanks! I saw someone else do it and decided to give it a try. Last year was my first year doing it that way because before they would sprawl into the lawn and cause a big grassy mess. They do well on the trellis, but I have to make little hammocks for them with tights so they don't break their stems.

Impressive garden especially the tomatoes! We moved to Celina from West Georgia and one thing that was so surprising was how hot and dry June through August has been, and even with straw mulch and drip irrigation our tomatoes have stopped growing and fruiting -- any tips for midsummer tomatoes in north TX? Great channel!

You are an incredible inspiration! I am so impressed with the variety and volume of food that you are growing for your family. I am experienced in gardening but new to Texas (Alvarado) and it is quite a struggle for me. I found squash bugs on my pumpkins today and it brought me to tears. They are the first thing I have been able to grow here and now I'm afraid all is lost🙁. I'm worried that the vine borers are right around the corner. My cowpeas and sunflowers look great. Tomatoes and zucchini are healthy, but far behind yours. What have you filled your raised beds with?
@OurGiftedGarden
@OurGiftedGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and welcome to TX! Alvarado is only about 30 minutes away from me. Most healthy plants can survive squash bug damage so if you're able to kill many of them, your plants may be okay. I have never grown pumpkins so I'm not an expert on how squash bugs will impact them. I truly hate squash bugs, so I completely understand your frustration with them. I'm on the lookout for the vine borers...I think I may have found eggs, but I'm not sure. I'm spraying bt regularly on my squash plant to hopefully kill vine borers before they can bore...but I'm mentally prepared to not get any squash...I hardly like it anyway. When I first filled my raised beds a few years ago I used a 50/50 mixture of top soil and miracle gro garden soil. Last season I topped them with a mixture of black kow and compost, but I was turned off by black kow because I got a bad batch that wasn't broken down all the way. This season I topped them with one to two inches of compost that I got from a compost supplier, living earth(much cheaper and of better quality than what I found at home depot/lowes) and mixed in some alfalfa pellets before planting. When I planted, I used 1/2 cup of Espoma garden tone for each transplant. I think our climate can be challenging because of the heat and insects, but because our season is so long we have time for trial and error; I'm sure you'll get the hang of growing here soon.

🤔 nice looking garden. The tomatoes would probably do better if you clip off all the suckers and if you water deeply either in the morning or the evening and add some slow release 10/ 10/ 10 fertilizer 3 time a season. I garden in the same zone and started doing these things and I noticed a huge difference in all my plants. Good luck with your garden.

@OurGiftedGarden
@OurGiftedGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yeah I was hoping for a little more fruit from the pear trees, but I just got them last season so I guess they need to spend that energy elsewhere. I saw a tip from a few other gardeners that you should tie the branches so that they grow more horizontally and that causes more fruiting buds to develop for the following season. I'm going to try it.

Thank you for watching! I've visited Cox Farms and Ruibal's a few times and really like both of them. I don't really visit garden centers much, though. I'm more of a "see a plant I like, google it, and then order it" type. Plus, anytime I do go I always come home with houseplants; I have a bit of an addiction.

@OurGiftedGarden
@OurGiftedGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yeah, i bought the soil. When I first built the beds I filled them with a mixture of topsoil and garden soil/compost. Each spring, I refresh them by adding a layer of compost, 2 or 3 bags per bed. The mulch and how densely I plant help the with weeds. I have a little more trouble with grass growing in my onion bed and strawberry beds, but I'm working on it.

I'm a new subscriber to you. A little behind the curve since it's Oct but I have a small garden mostly in buckets and pots with one small raised bed. I grow what I call a salsa garden. My wife makes a some really good salsa and I grow most of the ingredients for it. I just moved here from California 2 years ago and have a question about your fruit trees over the winter. I have a lemon, a lime and a blueberry plant that are still in the pots that I want to survive the cold. I don't plan on planting them in the ground until next year maybe or maybe even the year after as I just got them this year. How are you going to protect your trees from the cold? I'm in S. Dallas so it is going to get cold. My plan for this summer is to use part of my garage as a green house for them and so that I can start some other plants for next spring to have them ready. Are there any plants I can still plant now for the winter, or is it to late to grow and harvest anything now? Thanks for the video, I'm going to check out the rest of yours from this year to see how things are developing and what other tips I can pick up!
@OurGiftedGarden
@OurGiftedGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Welcome and thanks for watching and subscribing! For your lemon and lime trees, you may need to bring them indoors or into the garage when we get really cold temperatures. The level of cold they can withstand depends on the variety but I don't know of citrus that can be grown here without overwintering it indoors or some other warm place. My mom brings in some of her non cold-hardy things into the garage and turns on a space heater when it gets too cold. Blueberries tend to be cold-hardy, even in containers, but how cold hardy they are depends on variety. I grow all of my blueberries in containers because it's easier to maintain acidic soil that way, and I didn't protect them at all over the winter and they did fine. For my fruit trees, I selected varieties that grow well in this area so they can handle the summer highs and winter lows without needing to be sheltered, even the nectarine trees and mulberry trees that I have in containers did fine over the winter. As far as things you can grow now, you can grow pretty much any cool-weather loving crops that can take a light frost. If the weather gets down into the 20s you'll need to provide some protection, but you can grow all winter here since it doesn't get that cold very often and when it does it's rarely for long periods of time (use a tarp, sheets, blankets - whatever I have). I'm growing cabbage, collards, kale, beets, chard, pak choi, broccoli and other leafy greens. I have yet to plant them into my garden because I didn't want to pull up the summer plants that have only recently ramped up their production now that the brutal heat is gone.

Thanks for watching! I purchased mine at tractor supply and it came in a 4 by 8 panel. They also had 4 by 16 panels. I didn't have a way to transport 16ft so I put two 8 ft ones together for my arched trellis and muscadine trellis. I didn't need to cut it because the length and width were what I needed.

How often do you water your beds in the summer and what time? I reside in Carrollton and its getting hot
@OurGiftedGarden
@OurGiftedGarden Жыл бұрын
I'm still figuring out the right cadence. I have drip irrigation in most of the beds; I'll be finishing the rest of them in the next few days. So far, I've been watering about every three days, but that's only because it hasn't gotten Texas hot yet. When I was hand watering in the summer, I watered containers every day and the raised beds every other day. I usually did it in the evening, mainly because that was when I had time. Once I set up the timer for the irrigation I'm planning on watering them just before dawn every three days, I'm sure I'll have to adjust a bit to figure out the right time/frequencey.
