Awesome work Kayla. I home schooled my son for 1 year plus before that, he had done 1 year of Montessori. After the two years of this approach, he entered a private Catholic school. He was 1 grade ahead with schooling compared to rest of the children of his age. The thing is that after focused pre-schooling, he did really well throughout his school years. He eventually went to college and got a Master's in Music Composition. He is now a composer and teaches at 2 local universities. You are doing a wonderful job. The good thing is that you understand the process of cognition and learning in young children, and your kids are very lucky to have you as their mom. Congratulations girl!

Thank you for sharing this! Very helpful to see a *realistic* example of how to handle children when they are getting frustrated. Clearly you are doing a great job and your kids are thriving. I have one gentle observation to consider; multiple times you mentioned a particular activity you were asking them to do was a ‘distraction’ or to ‘keep them entertained’ or ‘busy work’. While I appreciate this is probably for the viewer’s benefit to know how to structure a homeschool day where you are trying to balance independent work with one-on-one work between kids, you may want to consider how your little ones might internalize this language if you make a habit of saying these things in front of them. You don’t want them to get the message that schoolwork is to keep them busy or that mom doesn’t believe what she is teaching is actually important (obviously you don’t think that - you picked out things where they are working on actual skills!) I don’t say this to criticize, just something to consider. One of the beautiful things about homeschool is that we get to foster a love for learning, and one of the saddest things about public schools is how quickly it makes kids resentful of learning once they realize how much of their time is being wasted. Kids desire meaningful work, so I humbly recommend being mindful of how you talk about the importance of their work in front of them. Just some food for thought. Again, you are doing a great job, and I can’t wait to see more!

Anyone else going “immediately no”. I think homeschooling is BY FAR the best thing you can do for your kids. The best kids I have met are homeschooled and I think it was so so so many benefits. But I just do not see myself doing it. I just can’t. 😂 just wanted to put this out there in case anyone feels guilty about how amazing Kayla is at this. All power to you and all the homeschool mamas out there! My kid is going into public school next year because I just can’t lol.

I'm homeschooling my 3 kids and it has been really difficult for me to even get started. I went to public school so I have been trained to think I need to sit down for 8 hours and teach my kids. I'm finding that to be totally untrue. When I first started with my 5 year old, I actually MADE him sit and do his writing. It wasn't good. I didn't realize that it should only be a few minutes a day. I didn't realize that I only needed him to do a few worksheets. Me and him had a fall out because he wouldn't hold his pencil right. Little did I know that kids his age aren't expected to hold things right. I have also been overthinking what my kids should be learning. It should be simple right? But for some reason it's not for me. I think I've been letting what the expectation is to overrule what I want to teach my kids. After watching this video and talking to my sister in law last night I'm feeling alot more confident and excited about teaching my kids. I'm going to do my best not to overwhelm myself and them. We quit homechooling for about 4 months, and now that we have finally moved, I'm ready to get back into with new ideas and I'm going to be alot more patient with him.

If she likes to draw and color, Draw, Write, Now is also a good option. They give them sentences for each picture that they copy onto the writing/art sheets and it shows them step by step how to draw a part of the picture.

if u buy some clear sticky cupboard liner- in a roll u could cut out a large square of that and tape it to the window sticky side facing you. Then the kids could put on those tissue squares. Yu could finish it off with a border of a shape like a heart, basically the outline of a heart and then add it to the picture. Finally curt around the shape- the heart and u have a stained glass heart or whatever shape outline u choose. I have done this using the outline of a xmas tree!!!!!

As a fellow florida homeschool mom check into the step up for students pep scholarship for next year! It's meant for homeschoolers and it's not an income based program, anyone can apply! The funds can be used to purchase curriculum, field trip expenses and so much more! The only "negative" is that you need to submit a standardized test assessment for your child each year at renewal but there are options for this that can be done at home and results are just for their research purposes, not for qualification in program/grading. Our family has been able to purchase some amazing things with this scholarship!

Hi, you could look up fun hands on learning on TPT for preschool kindergarten curriculum. This is a great approach to move away from worksheets while still having the child learn. Im a huge advocate for learning at this age without worksheets, although i have nothing against worksheets every now and then as they will need exposure to them and are good for formative assessment of where the child is at just not needed every day as the only approach. This age children need to learn through their body. All the best!

Horizons look awesome but it seems really pricey for preschool! That’s what I love about TGATB it’s very affordable and good curriculum
@KaylaBuell5 ай бұрын
Yea horizons is pricier but it’s a much more complete, comprehensive curriculum. The teachers guide includes activities to do with your child in so many different subjects - Bible study, science, physical education. So in my opinion if you’re someone who wants a more comprehensive Christian curriculum that’s completely thought out for you, it’s awesome. But if you want something a little simpler, something that just focuses on early math and phonics, then TGATB works perfectly!
