This interview truly highlights Kobes ability to read people & his emotional intelligence.. probably gained from years spent people watching when feeling isolated as a child.. It also shows what an incredible coach he could of been in his later years, his ability to simply break down mistakes they made in games years ago is outstanding. RIP the black mamba 🖤

Just realized I’m watching a lot of Kobe Bryant videos on 8/24. 😢 still can’t believe he’s gone. When the breaking news hit that he had passed away I was driving and my girl at the time said OMG. She couldn’t even tell me because she knew how much he meant to me growing up. So she said “you need to pull over” so I did and then she told me. I cried instantly, took me awhile to get myself back. For a man I had never met he had such an impact in my life. Love always, Forever Kobe!!!

Someone needs money, relationship/marriage advice, a foot in the ass when one of us is stupid (real friends hold no punches), a place to crash, food, whatever. Man, I did security for Kobe during his trial. I had had just left MARSOC and a buddy who owned a security company offered me a job. About 18 months after, during his trial, he needed full time security. I refuse to make judgments on what happened, I wasn’t there, but Kobe treated me with great respect when I was with him. He was funny, intelligent, and would have been a great soldier if he wasn’t so damn tall. I never got to meet Shaq. At that point, the rivalry was in full swing. Although, outside of the press, I never heard him say a bad thing about Shaq. He dubbed me the “White Death”, because he was fascinated by my military career as an operator. One night he made me spend hours making drawings of how our team would have breached and cleared the home he was renting. Literally spent 3 hours drawing maps and explaining to him how we kept each other safe. It was never the killing aspect he wanted to know about, it was always the team aspect.

When you live in LA, these 2 were all you hear about in school growing up. Watching all the games even in my 20's. Kobe was LA's icon. LA lost an icon but his death transformed the city with art. You can't drive for more then 2 miles without seeing this mans face on a side of a building. He will always be remembered.

LOL thats why shaqs 04 finals numbers are a fraction of what they were in his other finals appearances during his prime? Shaq's finals averages during the 3-peat were 35.9/15.2 and 3.5 blocks, his stats against Ben Wallace in the finals were 26.6/10.8 and 0.6 blocks. Obviously still great numbers but no one played him better than Ben. Even against Olajuwon just 3 years into the league in '95 Shaq had better finals numbers; 28/12.5 6.3 dimes and 2.5 blocks.

The thing is, during that time teams would either double or triple team shaq and he would put up the numbers he would. Ben Wallace was able to guard him by himself and keep him within the same numbers other would have to double/triple team him to keep shaq to. Being smaller than shaq (like pretty much everyone in the nba) he was able to do that with his excellent defense. Now, did he shut down shaq? no. Of course not. Possibly no one would be able to do that. But Wallace was able to guard him by himself. Which made his team able to focus more on the outside. Which kobe described and is what lost them that series. No one else in that nba at that time and very very few would be able to do what wallace was able to against shaq.

YOUniverse1234 dude what are you talking about. You had Kareem Abdul jabbar, Bill Russell, dave covens, Mel counts, Walter Bellamy, Nate Thurmond . All solid centers that are either 6’10, 6’11 or taller. He played against Oscar Robertson, Elgin Baylor, and against and for I’m pretty sure jerry west. Just because we have no footage of these guys as much as we do modern nba players, doesn’t mean they are trash.

The laughs and smiles they share throughout this prove the love and respect they had for each other. 100% certain Shaq is thankful he took the time to do this interview with Kobe and it's probably one of his treasured memories they made together. Sure, the accolades mean a lot, but this was sitting down with a best friend and brother and spending some time together enjoying being in the other's company. Makes what Shaq said on air the day Kobe passed that much more impactful.

When Shaq apologized to him it was so real and heartfelt. Kobe was so overwhelmed all he could do was smile, but you know it meant everything to him and to Shaq too. It's beautiful and almost cosmic that the universe let them have that before Kobe left this Earth.
