First and foremost, congrats to Timo, he worked hard for the win! It’s a privilege to still watch him on the court. Now for the service issue. Although Timo was frustrated with Lin’s serve and rightfully so, the umpire should have dealt with the issue long before the 8:7 point. Penalizing Lin, or any athlete at such a crucial point of the game heavily disrupts the flow of the match and the players, especially after a timeout called BY Lin. Yes, the umpire has warned Lin previously, but also has turned a blind eye to the service until it was absolute crunch time for Lin. Timo called it at 4:4 of the third game; until 8:7 of the fourth Lin used the shovel serve. The penalization was the correct call, just call it earlier.

Most players using a shuffle serve, do it to hide the point of contact behind the shoulder or the head. It looses it’s effectiveness immediately, once you can clearly see the point of contact. Ruwen Filus as asked some time ago, who of the worlds top players is having the best service game. His reply was surprisingly clear. He didn’t want to give an answer to the question, since all top players try to hide contact point to make it tough to read the spin. The only thing, then umpire did wrong, was to call it out so late in the game. Timo is one of the best players, when it comes to reading the spin of the ball. If he misreads a bunch of serves, something strange is going on.

This is a match that every advanced player should watch. It will be studied and shown millions of times by Chinese coaches - millions of times !! Timo is smooth as silk on all dimensions - Tactics, Technical, Mental and Physical. I can only imagine how many more brilliant players could benefit from his coaching talent !! (Like Jorgen P., Ma Lin, Rossi, etc). Timo has proven over and over again that he can turn a match around in a blink of an eye. (ex: Lin G. Y. - 10-6 in a final and lost it) Kudos to Lin to be able to play so strong at his age. I love his demeanor ... so mature -and he will win many many finals !! Kudos to the ref, as they must put the pressure, so players don't take it to that type of "dirty" tactical level. Kudos to YOU TIMO ! Just inspiring to watch.

In the first half of the match, Timo just wins so many points due to the spin. Lin kept blocking the balls out or when Lin tries to counter, the balls fly out. 09c is a spiny rubber.

Lol, almost every serve Lin Shidong threw the ball slightly backward, shielding the ball with his body or shoulder, and he acted like he was surprised when the umpire finally called it fault? That toss and serve motion by Lin was not an accident, it's by design. I am glad the umpire finally called it. The better player in this match, Timo Boll deserved the win in spite of the unfair serve from his opponent throughout the match.

Timo demonstrates 2 VERY IMPRESSIVE things in all his matches in the last few years: 1. The sheer amount of experience of the man. I mean when the opponent hits the ball, I instantly feel that Timo has already seen this exact return, with the exact amount of spin, power, placement a million times and he can win points just by selecting the "right response" to the shot. 2. The way he continuously refines his technique. I mean in this match, his movement, and shots were better than ever, it really shows how he never settles for a certain level of play, and he is constantly pushing himself to become even more skilled. A true testament of how humility and the principle of lifelong learning applies to all human activities. No one would think you can play like this at his age, but he's not having any of that! He doesn't care about what anyone thinks, he is focusing on himself and his technique. And he will NEVER STOP! Timo, you are a true inspiration for many many of us! Keep it up!

I've seen lots of disrespect from (presumably) Lin Shidong fan towards Timo in the comment section, and honestly Im disgusted. From viewer's point of view, I can see his services being illegal and the Umpire's call was absolutely correct. I understood when your favorite player lost and his service being called out can make you feel unfair, but that's no reason to berate other players and their fan. It just makes you (and your goat) looks less favourable and worse to everyone else. I'm not fan of either, just love watching the sport, but I respect both of them and they both showed good perfomance this match. Please don't show hate because it just ruins everything for everyone.

Bad game from lin. He seemed to really have problems with the rather slow game of timo, probably bc he's used to playing against chinese players who mostly play really fast. Bc if you look at the fast rallies, lin was almost always the winner of them. This loss was in my eyes just due to a lack of experience. And that's the thing with chinese players, going back to what adam said, yes, timo did reach the stage of pro one year earlier than lin, but not bc he was better, but bc german players play against a big variety of playing styles, so slow, fast, spinny, and hard, since up from the regionalliga, there are a lot of foreign players that participate in german league games, unlike in the chinese super league, which is also not an actual league system (i think at least). And there are more good chinese players that german ones, so it's harder for them to get real experiences in big matches. That's also why felix lebrun currently has a higher rank than lin. In a confrontation, lin would win in around 7 out of 10 matches, but he gets less playing time since there are players like ma long, wang chuqin and fan zhendong who have more experience and therefore are picked before lin.
