That brings back great memories ! I haven’t done a big crab boil in n years but back in the day I’d get a bunch of crab and shrimp to make a boil. Huge pot on an outdoor propane burner. I’d cover a picnic table with butcher paper and pour the boil out on the table for everyone. Those were the best parties !
@CookingWithClamsАй бұрын
I wish I caught enough to do a whole picnic table!
@DaveinccАй бұрын
I had crabber friends. Usually traded venison for the crabs crabs. Same for the shrimp. Beer was better trade for shrimpers offshore. Also trade with shrimpers for chum and bait.

Have you ever tried foraging your own sumac? I tried it this summer and was pleasantly surprised at my results. It is a lot of work separating the seed coating from the seeds but also somewhat therapeutic. I made the sumac aide from the leftovers and it was also delightful.

I'm now expert here, as a matter of fact, I've only crabbed once, and that was when I was a kid and it was in Cape Hatteras. Somehow, we did catch some though. Dumb luck However, I think, if you want bigger ones, you might have to get on a kayak, or a John Boat or something and get away from the dock, where every Tom, Dick and Harry are fishing! You might also have some luck with crab traps if you got away from the docks a little bit. Many youtubers, including your buddy Tug use this technigue. Just a few suggestions like i said, I'm no expert. (By the way, we caught those crap, cooked them (an older cousin cooked them, and man were they ever NAAAAASSSSTY. This was before the internet, so we had NO IDEA WHAT WE WERE DOING! Thanks to people like you, we may have been able to make them edible, (If only youtube was around then. It seems like we took out a row boat that the hotel that we were staying at allowed guests to use, went out in what I think was a canal, and just hand netted them. I dont remember using any bait or anything and we caught a giant pot full! Ohhhh to be young, dumb and full of myself again!
@CookingWithClamsАй бұрын
Yes! Definitely bigger ones out deep. One day soon I’ll get myself a small boat
@goodun2974Ай бұрын
@@CookingWithClams, as a 70's teenager we could easily net a bucket full of keepers in the tidal rivers of Long Island Sound, scooping them off of dock pilings or slowly rowing up into the shallow feeders while somebody stood in front of the boat with a long-handled net. Probably a lot fewer of them now......we even netted Diamondback Terrapins a few times just to admire them for a few minutes before releasing them (they are an endangered species due to nearly having been hunted to extinction for soup over 100 years ago ).
