And when I truly sought for many years, by reading the Bible itself, not outside book somethings become obvious. I did find that I believe because I had been guided to believe. I did find While Jesus did exist, believing Paul (one man who is a writer who uses the first person pronoun too much)is the same as those who believe one man, Joseph Atwill. How did Paul supplant those who were said to have been with Jesus. Believing "Paul's story as told by him" is no different than following Joseph Smith who 2K years later did the same thing. I do not believe Atwill's proposition. However, some parts of the Roman influence, such as the way the books are blatantly written to remove the responsibilty for punishing and killing Jesus away from the Romans, and place it on the Jews. This is obvious for the uncoached-minded reader, and it is historical and factual. It is also obvious the reason Paul became popular, was that he in his own words, "taught what gentiles (then and today) itching ears wanted to hear."

This documentary essentially focuses on how Christianity was adapted to Roman traditions once the empire adopted it as the official religion. The message of Jesus is clear, direct, and repeated: no earthly power, no material good, including one’s own body, has real value. Additionally, they sought to ensure that the scriptures were not read by believers by prohibiting translations into local languages, making a monk the necessary intermediary between the believer and the book. These measures certainly do not support the idea that the scriptures were inherently favorable to Rome, even after choosing the writings that were less critical of Rome and more adaptable to the empire. The dark humor, as described by this documentary-whether Titus Flavius entering Jerusalem on a donkey-reaches its peak when northern peoples, unrelated to the Jewish people in any way, ended up bringing down the Western Empire. Material conquests aside, it’s evident, as far back as Diogenes of Sinope, that happiness and peace are internal. No Roman emperor was ever able to live in peace and harmony. People have been taught to only understand it in a serious, historical way and not in the comedic, clever satire, that actually mocks religious beliefs, that Atwill discovered it was really written as. Remember their "immortal soul" (where's the proof a "soul' even exists, right?) hinges on Christianity being "real" for them. Fantasies die hard. If you read it, what's your favorite joke? Here's the biggest question I have about this idea that they never addressed: If Jesus Christ was supposedly a Roman invention, how do you explain Christians being persecuted by the Roman state into the 4th century? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Also, if the Flavians supposedly invented Jesus and Christianity, why did they need and, indeed continue to, endorse and practice the Imperial Cult that directly contradicts Jesus' own claims about the nature of his divinity, his relationship to God the Father (the Jewish Yahweh), and his stated purpose for his followers? What seems more likely based on ALL of the historical evidence (especially the fact that Christians were persecuted by the Roman state both before and after the Flavian dynasty) is that the Roman state gradually co-opted and corrupted the original Christian movement in order to control it. That doesn't mean Jesus wasn't a real person or that he was invented by the Romans.

Christians refused to respect Roman gods. The Romans didn't care about belief but right works (rituals). Christians refused. If Christianity was about Roman power why would that very religion reject the gods of Rome? Not doing so is a rejection of Roman power since their power is grounded in their gods. Sadly, this will never undo the brainwashing for some to the literal interpretation of the Gospel story. Starting out, there is a contradiction in gospels as to the year Jesus was born. No one can point to a Hebrew or Gregorian calendar and give an exact day and year of when this Christ figure was born. According to Matthew, Jesus was born during the reign of Herod the Great (Matthew 2:1). According to Luke, Jesus was born during the first census in Israel, while Quirinius was governor of Syria (Luke 2:2). This is impossible because Herod died in March of 4 BC and the census took place in 6 and 7 AD, about 10 years after Herod's death. Which one is it? Some Christians try to manipulate the text to mean this was the first census while Quirinius was governor and that the first census of Israel recorded by historians took place later. However, the literal meaning is "this was the first census taken, while Quirinius was governor ..." In any event, Quirinius did not become governor of Syria until well after Herod's death. Face it, the Bible is not a recording of actual historical events. It's literature. The gospels are written in third person and by anonymous authors. The earliest found gospels were all written in Greek, not the native languages of Aramaic or Hebrew of the purported events.

None of the contributors to this video would be able to defend this ridiculous theory in a debate. The Jews rejected Jesus/Yeshua as messiah but they have never tried to say he didn't exist or claim to be the messiah. Virtually all major historians acknowledge that Jesus existed, based on the testimony of multiple historical sources from the 1st and 2nd century such as Flavius Josephus, Tacitus, Lucian of Samosata to name but a few. So we have Jewish, Roman and Greek sources from the first two centuries testifying to Jesus existence. The Romans didn't get on board with Christianity until the 4th century. Suggesting they would just suddenly invent a saviour, not based on their own pagan traditions, but based on the Jewish concept of a messiah is completely laughable. Remember the Jews had been mostly dispersed from their homeland after 70 AD and were a declining cultural force. This theory is utterly ridiculous and I would love to see it's promoters attempt to debate this with any half decent historian or Christian scholars.

None of this explains Paul, who was an Orthodox jew who converted to Christianity, if you know your bible in the slightest, you know that Paul met the original disciples who knew Jesus and he made sure that everything he was preaching agreed with what they preached about Jesus' life. Unless the apostles were lying to Paul about Jesus I don't see how this theory adds up at all. Seems highly unlikely the apostles were all lying to Paul about Jesus especially as they were very devote Jews who believed that lying was a grievous sin especially lying about faith. No serious historian subscribes to this view. To make any sense of this conspiracy theory you have to say all of the figures in the New Testament are entirely fictitious and all the letters and books were written by Rome ( despite the fact historians universally agree that we have Paul's letters which were undoubtedly written by him). Even if you subscribe to this crazy idea it begs the question, how did the religion start? You have to believe that Rome paid jews (who were deeply religious, faithful to their religion and opposed to Rome) to go about spreading the Gospel on behalf of Rome in Israel? The other silly thing about this documentary, Rome had no reason to do this, they had the most powerful army in the world they weren't afraid of a few zealous Jews, they didn't need to invent some convoluted way to covert them to the Roman way of thinking, they could force them to obey, and they did. Furthermore, the New Testament isn't exactly flattering of the Romans (like this documentary claims), they still crucified Jesus on a cross, also if Jesus was supposed to represent the Roman Emperor, I find it very hard to believe that the story the Romans would make up would involve their Roman Emperor (i.e. Jesus) being crucified like a criminal. Moreover, Christianity was nothing like Roman philosophy, which revered the Roman emperor and Roman Gods, and valued pride, strength, honour - conversely Christianity did not recognise Roman Gods, did not revere the Roman emperor (early Christians were put to death for this by Romans), Christianity is about humility, hope, love and faith, so the premise of this documentary is totally false (that Christianity is Roman thought made palatable to Jews). I could go on, but I won't, so many problems with this "theory".
