Full Range of Motion is KILLING Your Gains!

If you’ve been lifting for any length of time you have likely hard how you must lift through a full range of motion. In this video, I’m going to show you how the advice alone could be costing you some serious gains and how you need to clarify the difference between a joint’s range of motion and an exercise’s range of motion in order to understand it properly.

Performing your exercises through a full range of motion is supposed to be how you place the maximum amount of tension on the muscles that are working in that exercise. That is not true however. In some instances, the continuation of a joint’s full range of motion actually takes all of the tension off of the very muscle you are trying to work and grow.
For instance, with the triceps kickback with dumbbells on an inverted bench, how many times do you see someone lift the dumbbells at the top of the movement almost into a curl. What exactly is this part of the exercise doing for your triceps besides letting them rest while you actively contract the biceps. In order to perform this exercise correctly, the “full range of motion” is actually half of the full range of the elbow.
Think about it. The elbow is capable of flexing and extending. You can bend your elbow until your wrist touches your shoulders or you can extend it until it is straight and in line with the upper arm. Of course, you can stop at any range in the middle of that path as well. That said, just because the full range of motion of the elbow is that it doesn’t mean that a triceps kickback should emulate that.
For the kickback to be effective, you have to use just half of the range of the elbow in order to keep maximum tension on the triceps. In this case, you would stop with the dumbbell pointed towards the ground and the elbow perpendicular to the floor. Squeeze up to the top by extending your elbow fully and come back down again to the half way point. Full range here would be half the range of the elbow.
It goes beyond this however and can be said about the shoulder press with dumbbells. When the purpose of the press is hypertrophy you want to maximize the tension on the delts and not the triceps or assistance muscles of the press. So in order to accomplish this, you want to stop the dumbbells when the upper arms are parallel to the floor and press up from there. Keep your press short and you will dramatically improve the results you see in your delts while performing what is full range of motion for the exercise.
Lastly, the side lateral raise is another that you want to keep the dumbbells slightly away from your sides when you perform them. On the other hand, if you use cables instead of dumbbells you can let the arm go across your body and you still have tension on the muscles of the shoulders.
The key is understanding that full range of motion is only pertinent to an exercise and not the joint involved in the exercise. If you want to make your best gains you need to stop letting the two overlap when they are not supposed to. If you are looking for a complete training program that puts the science back in strength head to athleanx.com and get our ATHLEAN-X Training Systems.

ATHLEAN-X™ hey Jeff great video, but one question though. Aren’t you not supposed to go past 90 on a shoulder press (if you’re going heavy) for the reason of not putting all that weight on your Supraspinatus and risk injuring it not just to keep decent tension on the shoulders?

Where can I ask Jeff if my way of training is correct or good enough? Ex. Laying on my chest in 15 to 30 degree and lifting a barbell in front of me! Is it good for my shoulders and so on...?? And training my biceps by twisting my forearms - how is it done best?? Thanks for helping and inspiration. 🙂 Anders from Denmark

To be honest, the most important thing to keep in mind is to know how to do an exercise with correct form to avoid injury, (possibly permanent injury) in the long term. Beyond that, you can do reps and sets however you want, and if in doubt about how many reps to do, go for high reps with lower weight if you're worried you can't lift heavy weights with correct form. This video is just about how to do an exercise efficiently to see results faster, and not waste time so I wouldn't worry too much about any possible injury with these exercises, besides the behind the back shoulder press which Jeff mentioned

When training for hypertrophy...think FULL RANGE OF TENSION on the exercise rather than FULL RANGE OF MOTION of the joint or joints involved in the exercise. Make sense? There's a BIG difference and it makes all the difference in your gains.

ATHLEAN-X™ With all due respect but this is confusing. In most of biceps exercises we go full range of motion related to joints and not to tention, that's wrong now! It's clear if we go half-rep then muscles are more tensed but that's not what you taught us Jeff.. I'm sorry but out of hundreds of your great videos, this is first time I find contradiction with older videos and is confusing.

Four fundamentals of hypertrophy and strength training. 1. Mechanical tension (intensity). 2. Metabolic stress (constant tension within an exercise specific range of motion). 3. Muscle damage (volume). 4. Progressive overload (more sets (volume), more weight (intensity), or more often (frequency) on 1-3).

Sure they are longer, but they go into depth and reveal subtle details that I would never think about. Jeff video's on the other hand talk about self-explanatory shit like don't do triceps kickbacks through so long ROM that you are doing a hammer curl the other way. Like duh. I have gleaned one useful detail from this channel from the many times I've checked it out, and that's how to do lateral raises safely. Besides that, this channel is nothing more than a decent starting point, you get no complete picture about the best way to train for your goals from these videos, just a varied bunch of self-explanatory things...

Wrong. Full range of exercise isn't "full range of tension". Take partials, bench press from pins, pulls from blocks etc. All of those aren't "cheat reps" or improper exercises, it's the exercise that specifically requires shortened range or motion. And no, it's not about tension in that case.

Not really, he still advocates for full range of motion, just not on the joint, because often times it lets your muscle to rest in-between reps which takes the tension off it for a second. Which in turn lets you do more reps, that's why everyone and their mother does it.

diahys732 nah it's correct. If you drop all the way down you end up using momentum to press up again. Forcing the muscles to stop and control the weight within the range of motion will challenge you so much more.

I love to see these kind of tips and tricks (eventho i know many of the tips). I have injured my left shoulder by doing bad benchpresses a few years back and have now reached a point where i can no longer train chest/shoulders without pain. I have tried several ways of lifting and several doctors but noone can find why my shoulder hurts.... Gonna try a few things from your channel after i've rested my shoulder for a few months.

You're overall recovery should be fine but I won't recommend doing them every day, especially if you're going to failure. If you do them every other day, the extra recovery should help.

2:30 Hey Jeff, If the middle delt isn't kicking in until that perpendicular degree point, I was just wondering, what is doing the work to actually raise it up from those bottom 30 degrees up to that perpendicular point? Thanks!
@Nutellafuerst
@Nutellafuerst 6 жыл бұрын
Douchy69 its the supraspinatus muscle, a muscle you cant really feel from the outside because its buried deep underneath your delts. it basically does the abduction of the arm almost alone all the way up to 60 degrees, so its actually a really important muscle.
