That's true, "underpowered" cars are cool to drive beacause you have to push youself to the best, I kind of learned to race in an old VW with more or less 100 hp, you had to switch gears so fast and preciley if you wanted to reach some speed, It was all the time switching gears. A more powerful car just make it unnecessary, there is most of the time enough power.

Personally, I like the sound of naturally aspirated BP engines over the aluminum block engines from hondas. Its the iron block and iron exhaust header that helps give it a deeper tone rather than the sharp high-pitched metallic sound that aluminum blocks and aluminum exhausts produce. Aluminum is better ofcourse, but the sound just doesn't hit right for me. High-pitched tones give me headaches. But that's a personal preference.

"Slow car, fast" is a combination that I feel not many people evolve, as enthusiast, to ever really appreciate. The internet influences guys to feel irrelevant if they aren't 350hp/2200lbs or 800hp/3700lbs, etc. 185hp, naturally aspirated, great balance, in a light car without a bunch of momentum to get you into too much trouble...it's a beautiful thing. With proper gearing, 185hp in a light chassis is purely amazing...I've had many. My import days have mostly passed (car wise...but I own early 90's Jap SUV's now), and my enthusiast car is a C5Z with remote res coilovers, sways, square 18x11 setup on Michelins, etc. It's in the 390whp/2980lb category...I actually stepped it down from 590whp. Finding purity...true balance...it's something the Japanese understand, that not many Americans often do...and that's a shame. Everyone likes going faster....but you make many sacrifices when the hp goes up, and it takes a purist to understand what those sacrifices are. Many people have no idea what that means...
@TheSlipAngle5 жыл бұрын
Very well said and I absolutely agree! I grew up and evolved with the slow car fast principle. While I'm past that point and do appreciate having more power to hoon about, a car like this is still very entertaining to drive. I also owned a C5Z for a little while and know exactly what you mean. The Japanese really incorporate "Balance" into their build philosophy so while usually underpowered out of the box they all drive very well and are easy to operate. The C5Z was a really fast car, but there were definitely shortcomings in the whole balance department. I didn't keep it long enough to see what I could do with it via some suspension tuning. With that said, everytime I see a clean C6Z driving down the road I am taken back by them. They have aged really well. Cheers brother :)

@TheSlipAngle5 жыл бұрын
The problem is that by going with a forged bottom end I would only gain about 400 RPM, the difference between 8k and 8400 RPM is just not enough for me to go through with that much work. Look at the crank girdle on the K-Series vs the mains on the BP. There is just not enough support for high RPM. Honda cylinder heads flow better than just about everything else, which is the ticket for all motor builds. I'd also gain low end back being able to use VTEC, right now I am basically VTEC all the time which hurts the low end power lol. Plus they are lighter :)

@@TheSlipAngle I'm also a bit concerned about driving this fast on public roads, you just never know whats behind the next corner. The guy who commented was just right, you should at least get to a road where Ou can see a bit further

My NA was on the way to a build with this ethos. Suspension and engine were done. Interior was next. But alas, it was sold for an ND. And I'm now inspired to do interior on it!

Already knew about this video, but I had to watch again to remind myself what a good NB naturally aspirated build looks like

You are the one that inspired me to do something different other than turbo and build my miata for ITBs. I thank you for that

It's like the embrace of ideals behind gt-lite and production-class Austin Healey Sprites: no frills, one purpose, no compromises, within a budget. Super cool.

That engine is crazy. Look at how much the shifter shakes when cycling on and off the power.

I'm still so envious of this car. I am a NA miata guy personally currently loving a ND 2019. I would love this engine in a comparable 97'model

You can have all the power in the world and not be able to use it. This is a true drivers car and a fun one at that. It looks and sounds the business. I really love it, superb job.

I remember seeing pics of this car back when I had my NA in 2009 and it’s always been my favorite build next to marlins black NA. Could never decide between the two lol. So cool to know it’s still around.
