I will always call BS on the “Yes, we stole your money to give to so and so. But if you agree not to press charges, we’ll give you the money back or pay your bills/schooling costs ourselves.” If they had the money to do that, they’d have had no need to steal someone else’s money in the first place.

Its possibly a trick. If OP accepted they would have paid for some time than stop, claiming financial difficulties or smth. Not to mention the money would be most likely spent so reclaiming it would be hard and they still could claim in court that they had some sort of agreement in place using the payments and the fact OP not sued them from the start as proof. It would at least lengthen the case to possibly bankrupt OP.

iirc, what the parents did was VERY illegal. Just because you're the manager of a trust fund that is entailed in someone's will, as an inheritance, does NOT give you the right to touch that money, never mind give all of it away! in cases like this, many good lawyers will actually work for no fees up front, and you can also request the judge to assign payment of the lawyer's fees to the criminals once the case is won against them.

Fora anyone dunking on OP, when you are dealing with an inheritance, you can't go against the guidelines in the inheritance. It is not a laughing matter. My family had to take their siblings almost to court to get out of the inheritance battle. It was still a pain for all of us.

Also, chloe should buy a house in her means, she should have known her parents weren't just getting money out of nowhere, and if she wants the house, sell the jewelry or the estate the parents got? Why is it someone not involved that has to lose their money, whole the ones choosing to give money, and the one getting the house get to keep their money?

Seems like she did. Chloe in this story isnt even an active actor. She completely oblivious to everything. She didn't decide anything to make this situation brewing. She even capable on buying it herself. She is neutral side that can defuse the situation by simply refusing the money. Which is another factor that making the parents returning the money, as the only choice. She maybe knew, and trying to wash her hand. But even that, at least she didnt hasten things up to complete the purchase and make court battle become much more torture. If she is this kind of actor, at least she is the one with a brain. She know when to stop and saving herself from much more complicated situation. Also, maybe the amount of money isnt that much. Its big enough for a teen to have a college and maybe start on a better footings after graduate, big enough to buy an okay house for a small young family, but not worth the battle against a lawyer of a respected military person. It was all on the parents selfish decisions, they have their own vision on how things should go and try to execute that. The uncle might decide to get involved not because the money but the principal and ideal he have. Military people usually have a high degree of idealism and willing to hold it even if its for small amount of money for them. The uncle is awesome, the parents is suck, and the sister is okay/harmless. Good thing the OP move fast and refuse to stand silent, to defend what she deserve.

If the couple doesn't have the income why buy a fancy house? A 1/2 room aptt is enough for a couple with low income! Move to a bigger place when your income goes up

OP's parents shouldn't be allowed anywhere near OP and her kids. OP should announce in the family group chat, that she proposed to uncle and aunt that she call them dad and mom (without OP having any inheritance rights) and THEY AGREED! YEAH!

Like, why would anyone believe the parents will actually cover the expenses? How about op cover her own expenses with the money entrusted to her? "we already gave the money to chole and she's buying her house and it wouldn't be fair to ask for it back" well that sounds like a you problem

i know someone who is over 18 and the parents just kept the money. they know their kid hates them so they just kept it and whenever the kid asks them they just ignore. they assume the kid won't take legal action.

You reap what you sow. OP's parents can not be trusted. His sister is greedy and entitled. Sue them and be comfortable with the decision. Let his parents pay for their theft and fraud. NTA. Let Chloe and her husband sell some jewelry. A lso, the parents inherited a big estate, so use that money to help Chloe. The parents caused the whole situation. Why in the world would anyone think buying a house $100k over budget is a great idea. Great, they get the house, but now they still have to pay closing costs, homeowners insurance, taxes, etc. based on the purchase price.
