bill Thomas racing built about 16 of them for chevy in 63, the shop burned down and never reopened. the cars were so short they didn't have a driveshaft, the motor hooked right to the rear end

It's technically a front/mid configuration, and one of the only examples of such I've heard of.

It's classified a mid a engine rear wheel drive car. The seat is just at the rear or the car giving the impression of a front engine rear wheel drive. If you look closly the engine is more than 2 feet back feom the front of the car.

@Cemi_Mhikku The SLR and SLS Mercedes are front mid as well. The Panoz Esperante GTR is a great one too.

Air flowing over the uncovered Webers was sucking raw fuel out the stacks

actually the cheetahs were electric fuel injected. those are not webers but itb's. what you are seeing is the heat shimmer from the air being pulled from around the engine and being sucked into the throttle bodies. these cars used a 327 from the late 50's early 60's corvette race cars which were the test beds for GM to test the reliability of the new electric fuel injection system (ramjet) during racing applications as mechanical fuel injection didn't work as gm intended during their Corvette debut in the 24 hours of le mans in the early 50's and went against in the late 50's with fuel injection.

It is worth driving this car just because of the fuel mist over the greedily sucking air funnels :-)
@mdemers767

I don't think that's fuel, I think the engine is sucking air in so hard the vacuum it's creating is causing temporary condensation to appear as the drop in air pressure slips below the dew point for a split second. Or I could be wrong. I'm just guessing. But I think the fuel is introduced much further down those velocity stacks. I doubt it has the pressure to overcome the incoming air velocity.

If only their shop wouldn’t have burned and the production cap wouldn’t have changed to 1000, they would have beat the sh*t out of Cobras .

Chevy didn't really have a choice onces the shop building them burned and they changed the racing rules to 1000 Instead of 100 so chevy had to pull the plug since they didn't have the ability to make that many at that time. If they didn't change the rules I bet chevy would have been doing great with them

Some kit cars are cool man. My dream car when I was a kid was a sterling nova. Didn't know it was a bug. But man... they even had one on the movie cannonball run. They are very hard to find now. But I would still like to buy a nice example and build the engine. I would drive it buy the school as it was letting out and busses are hitting the road and watch the kids go crazy over it. Ahhhhhh yes. Sweet dreams are made of these.

Ahh yes… You know that a Bugatti type 51 replica only cost a fraction from what the actual real deal cost ? And it’s the exact same car as the real one, if I had the money to buy both I’d go for the replica without a doubt, I can race it, drive it like I stole it and if I crash it, I can easily sent it back to the shop for repairs . So between 200k and 10millions what would you chose ? It’s a no brainer unless you just want to let it sit in a garage taking dust .
