2019: Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: FFH all made a billion dollars. 2020: COVID-19 2021: Wandavision, Loki, Hawkeye, Shang-Chi and Spider-Man: NWH were all huge successes. The only real flops were Eternals and Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Black Widow was average. 2022: Moon Knight was garbage. You don't know if what really happened is Canon or if it's all in his mind. Doctor Strange: MOM was trash. Thor: Love and Thunder was too goofy. She-Hulk was unwatchable. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was beautiful. 2023: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had no stakes. Everyone lived and Kang didn't seem like a big villain after all. Guardians 3 was the best movie since No Way Home. Secret Invasion was almost as unwatchable as She-Hulk and lastly marvel needed The Marvels to be a big hit. *SPOILERS AHEAD* All they came up with was an average movie that has highs (Ms. Marvels character, high stakes with Monica getting stuck in another universe and Kate Bishop showing up) and lows (A movie that doesn't know what it is. It even turns into a musical at one point.) It's been over the last two years, not four years.
@chadbrisco4042 Жыл бұрын
@siddiqsmouse5004 Not really. 2019 had Endgame, Spider-Man: FFH and Captain Marvel which all made over a billion dollars. 2021 had Wandavision, Loki, Hawkeye, Shang-Chi and Spider-Man: NWH which were all major hits and the Eternals is kinda growing on me (mainly because of how bad the movies have been in 2022 and 2023) but Eternals is still messy. I'd also consider Black Widow kinda average but it's weird because it came out five years too late. I'd say the last two years were trash with projects like Moon Knight, Doctor Strange: MOM, Thor: Love and Thunder, She-Hulk, Ant-Man and The Wasp Quantumania and Secret Invasion all flopping.

@@chadbrisco4042 Four years is 2020 to 2023, you shouldn't be counting 2019 in there at all. It falls beyond what @litcomicsproductions5359 was talking about. And Shang-Chi was a flop, not a "huge success". It probably lost $100 million, about as bad as Antman 3 actually. While Disney tries to blame the pandemic for the weak box office (for Black Widow and the Eternals as well), that's very disingenuous. NWH premiered only two months later, and it nearly broke $2 billion. The lockdowns were over well before SC's September 2021 premier, with most states having opened up a good year earlier than that. Also, while we'll never know the real viewer figures, it seems likely that Hawkeye was also a flop. It had no buzz online when it aired and even less since. At least people made videos about Loki's issues and Wandavision's poor ending. Hawkeye is much like Moon Knight: totally forgotten.

Well stated. That is a definite issue. The point of nixing all the other Marvel projects was to bring everything under one umbrella and make shows to fill up the Disney + catalogue but all the creatives were not on the same page. This could have been a phase of team-ups. Alas

One thing the MCU did during the Infinity Saga was hold some kind of event, around the end of each phase to connect all, if not most, of the prior characters in the phase. Phase 1 had the Avengers, Phase 2 had Ultron and, let’s face it, Civil War, and 3 had Infinity War and Endgame. The new phases don’t really have that, they just sort of expect for all of it to come together in Kang’s Dynasty and Secret Wars with no prior development. Most characters in the MCU now seem like they don’t at all exist in the wider world. Characters like Shang-Chi, The Eternals, and Moon Knight are so unimportant to the overall world, and so little mentioned, that it makes you wonder why they were even made. Sure, the Infinity Saga had that with Guardians, but those films atleast had a reason and would also help to expand on Thanos and the Infinity Stones.

Aside from No Way Home, the two seasons of Loki is the best thing post End Game. No doubt Covid threw a wrench into things. I feel like Marvel might have been too eager to create the next big threat. Having a few lower budget, lower stake, and less interconnected movies early on post End Game might have been a good way to prevent the current catch up fatigue that many viewers feel. Then slowly build the big threat back up. Back to basic of Phase One. Only Thor and Captain American actually felt like required watching plot wise for the first Avenger movie, the Iron Man(s) and Hulk were more character introduction rather than contributing to the plot.

Really spend some time identifying who the core characters would be going forward, what their main themes would be, and a general starting location for everyone. Right the characters in the Infinity saga symbolized something and they grew from their starting flaws, the current movies..don't do that? You can't continue characters' journeys and not pin point where it starts and how it ends, it's directionless, there isn't a thread woving the movies and characters together to a climax and the viewers can SEE that. To be honest some Infinity saga movies had this problem also but those problems got fixed in later movies that upon a rewatch, you don't even see it as flaw. But currently they're not even bothering to tie the threads together and the viewers just sit there like "what's the point?" it's frustrating. Because it was fixable, perhaps still is actually but with their trackrecord these last 4 years, I don't see them fixing it. Such a bummer.

Apparently, Tobey Maguire, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds are the main stars. That feels just like old times. Remember when Spider-Man and Wolverine would show up on the front covers of stories that had nothing to do with them? The feeling you’re talking about in this video is why I envy the average everyday viewer who doesn’t really spend all that much time on social media or KZbin and isn’t inundated with the constant news and rumors and theorizing and discourse. Marvel Studios is definitely in a valley following the peak of the Infinity War/Endgame era, but I feel like their woes have been grossly exaggerated by the internet discourse machine that’s hungry for their to be a “big story” about the franchise, when if you look at their history what’s happening lately isn’t too far off from business as usual. As you said, it’s not really a matter of quality at this point. KZbin and social media create a poisonous, cynical cloud of circular discussion about the franchise that’s more tiring than the movies or shows could ever dread to be in a vacuum. Whenever I find myself resenting my status as an MCU fan, it’s never because of what they put out, but always because of the inescapable fandom baggage. But that’s just how I feel about it.

"Whenever I find myself resenting my status as an MCU fan, it’s never because of what they put out, but always because of the inescapable fandom baggage." You think The Last Jedi was NOT a direct response to the fan theories that plagued the internet for 4 years? Even SOUTH PARK acknowledged that Kathleen Kennedy is basically just another part of the "fandom wars", and that her stories are just shots in said war. One of the strengths of the early marvel films was that sharacters were introduced slowly and they waited for the core characters to be well established before adding in other characters. If they'd started with Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Strange, Ant-man, Black panther, Guardians etc. all in phase one before an avengers film it wouldn't have had the same charm. I'm still on the MCU train, it just seems to be very hit or miss, especially this year. I think the best thing for them creatively to keep people invested is to make it so you don't need to watch every show/movie to get the overall narrative, obviously as a business they want to get as many people into seats as possible so they will continue with that model.

Found myself starting Loki S2 last night and it's really the only thing that's breaking the Marvel Formula. It was frustrating at first to see an extended scene of two guys eating pie and talking, but, after Secret Invasion being slavishly dedicated to the Formula to its extreme detriment, the wackiness, the far-out concepts, and the focus on characters in Loki are truly refreshing. I also very much appreciated Werewolf By Night explicitly saying it was in its own separate universe. Marvel cannot just be people punching each other + firing energy beams if it's going to keep interest up, and the multiverse concept can't be more important than good character work

The phase 4 disney+ shows should have followed the example of agents of shield and branched off in their own direction, telling an isolated story about the remaining secondary characters while have a clean slate of new movies with new hero's to establish. This way, audiences wouldn't need to watch every piece of content for major plot points. Instead, the shows would be small, contained stories that provide context and nuance to the mcu universe that's interesting but not necessary. And your point about re-establishing old characters from other universes absolutely makes sense since they're all mcu cannon now.

I think that some of Marvel's woes don't have anything to do with Marvel at all. It's viewer fatigue that may be temporary or may be a paradigm shift altogether. Up until COVID happened, there was a significant trend of making movies BIGGER, FASTER, STRONGER all the time and the insane success of the MCU and the superhero genre was probably the peak of that. You could see major franchises and directors trying to emulate that and failing to do so(like Star Wars, although quality-wise I'm not on the anti-Disney bandwagon, more like sitting on the fence). But I think this way of doing films and doing business in the movie industry actually peaked with Endgame and before people were even past the post-nut clarity phase, BOOM, here comes the lockdown and everything slows down to a previously unimaginable point. Our lives changed and people changed a bit, too. I think the initial series attempts, like WandaVision were well-received, because they were somewhat the opposite of the cinematic form that people got accustomed to, but Marvel has yet to find the formula that would work best long-term in the cinemas of the post-COVID world, because what worked during the 2010s, doesn't work so well now. Audiences starting yearning something different and that is hurting the big franchises, because when it comes to them, many people who were fans previously, always want to get the same feeling and vibe from them. They have expectations towards a franchise, based on their previous experiences and previous selves that those franchises may not be able to fulfill anymore, because the lay of the land changed, the franchise changed, the fans changed. Big franchises are struggling, while OG stuff, like Barbie and Oppenheimer made HUGE box-office hits this summer and were also mostly well-recieved pieces. We'll have to see if that was a flash in the pan or not, a lucky circumstance or good guerilla marketing, but it's a warning sign. As a wrestling fan, it's also a warning sign of changing times, that WWE has been able to grow their business through slowing the F down and pacing the storytelling a lot differently than wrestling has been doing it for the past 25-30 years. They're taking the time to build, and earn their success through creating anticipation, instead of shocking and wow-ing their audience. Patience will be key for the MCU as well, because if current trends in entertainment have any longevity to them, we may find ourselves in a world where audiences have very different triggers than they used to.

Yeah. I never was a big hyped fan of MCU, but I was keeping up with main characters and story. After the War the whole multiverse feels like such a disjointed mess that there's no anchor of interest. There was a couple of somewhat OK standalone movies like Shang Chi, but I don't have any idea what the overarching narrative is or who is it for. It's just a blur of characters and plots which are too complicated to care about. It feels like either "closing the unfinished point from previous phase" or "ANOTHER new IP". Fuck that.
@RoastymyToasty9001 Жыл бұрын
I remember I was looking forward to the Multiverse Saga almost as much as the climax of the Infinity Saga because we’d get to see so many beloved characters come to the big (or small) screen either for the first time or returning after so many years, She-Hulk, Moon Knight, America Chavez, and the return of characters like Garfield’s Spider-Man (don’t care what anyone says I have a soft spot for those movies), and Jackman’s Wolverine. Even the opportunity to reinvent characters like Shang-Chi and the Eternals both of which come from either convoluted or controversial pasts. Many of the characters I’ve mentioned have either been okay but most have been absolutely butchered. It’s actually impressive to take a character like She-Hulk who has such a rich history, great and quirky personality and absolutely ruin everything about her. Marvel has significantly dropped the ball and you’re right it may be too late to save themselves which is truly a damn shame.

Marvel's decision to release one film next year would prove everybody wrong. Cinemas needs Marvel for their appeal to audience. Their films are mostly events. I can predict that the total box office revenue next year would be lower than this year.

The thing that annoys me is the Multiverse Saga should be my kind of jam, I like when comic book films go into the weird and strange and comic bookish. So far though it’s been meh. I love how people are still talking about Maguire and Garfield’s Spider-Man. Has no one thought that maybe they don’t want to another one. That doing another one will just lead to typecasting in their resume. Why hang a dead horse? If you truly loved the performances of these actors appreciate that and let it go because if they listened to the general public they’ll be saying “just one more” until goes stale and as memory serves me I don’t remember fans begging or excited for tasm 3 film before it’s cancelling. I feel that a lot fans just want this character back and to have films like this again. Like do you not want an exploration of new characters. Yeah, I 100% agree with you, there’s good MCU projects, but there needs to be more interconnectivity, I’d suggest delaying some projects that don’t connect to the multiverse for after Secret Wars, and start making more movies set in other universes, I’m glad there’s movies like Cap 4, DS3, DP3, and SC2 to help build up the teams and establish the relationships, Sony and Marvel should be working with each other to make the Sony films good, and also connect both universes to each other

It isn't really the fall. X Men 97 is doing really well and Deadpool 3 is going to be a success. That's 2, maybes 11 if you count every single episode of X Men 97 on it's own, successes for Marvel in a single year. That's better than what Sony's doing with their stand alone "Spiderman" movies with them only having 1 success every few years, that one success being the animated Spiderverse movies.

Ah yes, the classic approach of, "the MCU would be fine if they only followed my very specific vision about what's cool and ignored IP ownership, how long it takes to make movies, and actor role preferences" Seriously, all your takes are right, but they're impossible, so they're wrong. The MCU *needs* to establish new actors in new roles. No one wants to play the same character for 20 years, which is why franchises eventually die. You're right that they're doing it wrong now, but your proposed solution is ludicrous. Marvel is just facing the exact same problem every other studio faced when they tried to create a cinematic universe in that they aren't just replicating the phase 1 release schedule exactly with 4 new heroes. Endgame essentially pushed a hard reboot of the franchise, but they're making the same mistake as every other movie studio in the past 15 years in thinking that the phrase "cinematic universe" will get butts in seats
@philovermyer6166 Жыл бұрын
The Achilles Heel of the MCU right now is, from my perspective, that we went from a shared universe with a building plot and films that borrowed from other genres to get us a cohesive world and a grand finale to "well what do we do next?" and a bunch of films and miniseries without a tight narrative and theme that helps us want to see the conclusion. The summing up of all the problems in one movie is The Eternals. A group of characters that we're introduced to late in the game, with a backstory that they have to run through quickly to get us caught up on who these people are and why we should care about them, we have to go through why exactly they sat out the big bad of Endgame, quickly set the cataclysmic stakes of the film, introduce a villain, and then the movie is over the world is saved and we wait for a post credit scene that...sets up a sequel to that film and a teaser for more characters to be added to the MCU. As opposed to something like Captain America: First Avenger which did only marginally better box office. We get introduced to who the main bad guy is, what the stakes are, who our hero is, all in the first little bits of the film and then we transition into a WW2 period piece style of film that we get to explore who these characters are and what they're about. We wrap it up with the day is saved, we have some threads that aren't tied up but also aren't direct sequel bait, we don't introduce tons of cameo characters, and the post credit scenes tease a larger plot that our boy Cap is going to get wrapped up in and we're itching to see the big team-up. We've seen Kang a small handful of times, only about 1/3 of the content or less has been setting us up for our next climactic milestone, we keep getting more and more characters added to the MCU that nobody asked for. We went from Iron Man, Cap, Hulk, Blackwidow, Thor, and Hawkeye to The Eternals, Thor, Hulk, She Hulk, Shang-Chi, White Vision, Iron Heart, Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, Kate Bishop, 2 iterations of Ant-Man and 2 iterations of the Wasp, Cassie Lang, Spider-man, Doctor Strange, America Chavez, possibly Black Panther, the new Guardians of the Galaxy, Valkyrie, and hints at half a dozen other characters like Daredevil existing alongside those characters not to mention the slate of adding 2 more whole teams and a whole new concept of powered individuals to the world with Deadpool 3, Fantastic Four, and the X-men all being pushed in. And we've still only seen or heard about Kang in the MCU like 4 times!!! The big bad and his context for being the big bad and we've barely been teased about it and how it effects alllll these characters. In the first 3 phases we at least got proper teased with Thanos just really really wanting the Infinity Stones and each movie gets us a little closer to what they can do and why Thanos wants them culminating in Infinity War where we get to see Thanos proper and all the payoff from each film gets delivered on. With Kang we get none of this, the first time we see him it all gets spelled out and then we don't see him for great swaths of releases at a time with his next big showing being Quantumania which honestly if they hadn't shoehorned in Kang as the baddie for that film it would have been much more palatable. I don't know if it's Disney trying to clog the box office or them not proper vetting their writers and directors or Feige not really knowing what to do with the media post Endgame but at this point the MCU is a bloated mess amalgamating everything it touches into itself like Tetsuo after attempting to absorb Akira.
