The wait time is based on need here in Canada. If you're waiting it means some else who is dying is ahead of you in line. My appendix bust in 2009, and I had surgery the same day. Total bill: $0.

I had a minor eye infection. The visit to the doctor's office lasted less than 10 minutes. He wrote a prescription for an eye ointment which cost about $8. The bill was nearly $2,000 (I did contest it since I had a very high deductible on my insurance, but that is another story of extensive paperwork, time wasted, frustration, and, ultimately, exhaustion). My wife, a Canadian, broke her wrist while we were in Canada. So, we went to the hospital and the bill was $0. There was no paperwork. She went to the hospital, they set her wrist, and that was that, except for the follow-up checks which were also free. It was fast, efficient, and free. Oh yes, if she wanted a pink cast instead of the standard white one, that would have cost $10, but she opted for the white one. So, there were options. Lesson learnt: marrying a Canadian might be the best investment you will ever make.

All employees want to offer now is the high deductible health insurance that do not cover any medical visits until you reach your $2500 or higher deductible. I paid out over $400.00 last year for two doctor's visits, one for a urgent care sick visit to get a doctor's note for work and one for a UTI I needed antibiotics to get rid of infection. Also, had to write an extra long repeal for my mother who has an Advantage Medicaid plan (like an HMO for Medicaid). Her pain doctor's office told her they took her insurance. The doctor did two procedures in his office that took about 20 min. each and charged her $15,000.00 for each procedure. Insurance said they would not pay as doctor was out of network. After multiple calls and going through the appeals process, they finally paid (though I know they paid the doctor no where near the $30,000 bill they were going to charge my mom).

So medical tests including having a camera down my throat and Nexium for recovery, I paid the whole bill. Ever cost out of pocket. I paid 50 bucks. Top level care and quality health services with brand name medicine and I paid 50 bucks and my cousin was furious. I was giddy. I had an ulcer diagnosed and repaired with medication for recovery that wasn't generic and it was 50 bucks. When I lived in England my health care was free. It was not bad care either. I did have to pay for dental care though and that was pretty cheap. So all in all I know that the US is getting shafted when it comes to health care.

"Free market system" with many small insurance companies is the disaster for working people, the system failed to provide basic consumer protection and must be transformed into single insurance company with private medical providers. Only single insurance company has the power to negotiate a fair contract and fair prices for consumers. Common problem in many medical plans: pre-existing conditions denial, don't cover basic/essential health problems, bankruptcy of people/families who even had medical insurance, problems with payment for out of network providers in emergencies, huge/unreasonable deductibles, very low annual limit, service denial, etc. Add to above the highest prices in the world we are paying for services and medications.
@davidstorrs4 жыл бұрын
It's a disaster mostly because health care *cannot* be a free market. Free markets require, among other things, price transparency (hospitals do not disclose costs), competition (in many places there is only one hospital available), and elastic demand (in the short term you cannot afford to NOT get emergency health care and in the long term you cannot afford to skip health care altogether).

We need Medicare-For-All/a single payer system here in the U.S.! What's more "Pro-Life" than ensuring that every person in America has guaranteed affordable healthcare? Also, if we all had access to basic healthcare, we'd all have the "freedom" to live long lives and rarely have to worry about medical bankruptcies. Sure, taxes will go up, but the overall cost will go down so much that everyone will be paying less and saving thousands of dollars every year. Furthermore, if some of us need additional healthcare than Medicare, then we have the "choice" to get additional insurance, but for others Medicare would be more than enough. Finally, if every other developed country (Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand) can implement this system and save money, then why can't the U.S. do the same and help "Make America Great Again" for everyone at least on the issue of healthcare?
@rvdb73634 жыл бұрын
One other major difference between the USA and other developed countries is that the USA government does not negotiate with pharmaceutical companies about drug prices. My government does negotiate with these companies. That's why my EpiPen costs $50 while in the states you pay more than $300 per injector. And a vile of insulin costs $23 here, instead of $275 for the same vile in the USA. A government is in a much better position to negotiate than individual insurance companies. If my small country can negotiate these low prices for 17 million citizens, the government of the USA must me able to get even better prices for its 300 million citizens.

Plenty of people in America who are "fully insured" by major insurance companies wait longer than they want to for needed care and procedures. When we get our single payer system, we need to look at all the other nations that have already been doing it and employ the strategies that are working best. America can create a great health care system that will save both lives and money.

It's because universal health care would make things a lot easier for small companies that could eventually challenge them if they were not saddled by the high cost of insurance. It's one reason why a lot of modern day startups need a lot of VC money up front and have to get big fast vs start small in a niche and slowly expand the old fashion way.

Bernie Sanders M4ALL is paid for with a 7% income tax. Aka 1,400 a year if you make 20,00. 14,000 if you make 200,000. For comparison In 2017 Americans paid $10700 on average for health care and the average Wage was $48000. Under M4all it would have been 3,300.

This is the problem when trying to explain free health care to some Americans. They see taxes going up but fail to see how it could save them huge in the end. And maybe you will never need to go to the hospital (that is wonderful) but also knowing your friend with cancer or sister who is pregnant arent going to go bankrupt is pretty wonderful also. The government has done such a great job training people socialism is bad that people will lead worse lives and fight against all improvements.

Australians pay about AUD4000 per year for health insurance, $10 co-payment for a doctor consultation $35 for drug prescriptions. Doctors often waive the co-payment. Why can't a similar scheme work in the US?
@gabemolentino74 жыл бұрын
I really don’t get how so many Americans are against universal health care. I’m Australian...we have a two tiered system. we have Medicare which provides universal health care. We also have private health insurance which people can enter into and depending on your income helps avoid paying extra tax. It’s not a perfect system but it works. Here’s my actual lived experience recently: my sister in law gave birth mid last year. They had private health insurance which provided private hospital cover. They received a private room in the hospital for 4 days post delivery, their choice of an obstetrician, and everything else you would get in the public system including meals, medication and nursing care. At the end on their admission they had to pay a gap fee. A few months later my wife gave birth to our baby son via C section. Although my wife and I also had private health insurance we opted to go into the public system. We received a private room for 4 days, the hospital also provide me with a second bed so I can sleep in the hospital with my wife and baby instead of going home, we got allocated the same obstetrician my sister in law got when she gave birth, and etc food, medication, and great nursing care. This didn’t cost us anything. Now can someone explain to me why so many Americans are against universal health care.

The average American needs to be convinced that 'instead of paying Insurance Companies' they will simply pay the Government and it will be LESS and get MORE..... I keep seeing people doubting they can 'afford it' when in fact they ALREADY DO.

MediCAID also pays for seniors in nursing homes long-term. MediCARE does NOT. No, most people can NOT save up enough to pay for that or buy insurance. Long-term care insurance is EXTREMELY expensive and only pays HALF your expenses for three years. The average nursing home charges $ 8,000/month. Home care averages $4,000/month PLUS living expenses. (rent, food, heating, electricity, etc.) The MAXIMUM social security benefit is $3,700/month. If you have to quit your job to care for an elderly relative 24/7, how do you pay YOUR rent? Many elderly people don't even have family to care for them.
