For this product showcase we spoke to Charlie O’Donoghue, Head of Product for
Easee UK, to learn about Easee’s innovative solutions for domestic and commercial
EV charging.
Easee was established in January 2018 by 3 Norwegian entrepreneurs with a vision
of creating the world’s smartest electric vehicle charger. Today the company
continues to develop their solutions for charging and power management
technology, to provide an ecosystem that will give customers a seamless experience
from A to Z.

I've had two of them sharing a 20A circuit since they came out (actually I preordered them a few months ahead of release as the Norwegian EV association had a nice offer at the time). In the beginning (two and a half years ago) the load sharing was rather primitive, just halving the available power to each car if both were plugged in regardless of whether the cars wanted to charge or not, but it now works very well and happily gives one car the full 20A if the other has finished charging. Also, while remote diagnostics was mentioned I don't think he mentioned that they automatically update their software with no intervention required. I also have the "equalizer" in my fusebox reading the meter so it can throttle charging if it gets close to main fuse capacity - a necessity as it would otherwise be easy to overload it since my house has electric everything (ovens/cooktop/boiler/underfloor heating etc.) and only a single phase supply sized back in the seventies. I'll be getting a third one for the cabin soon. 🙂👍

They should allow the home units to have payment processing which Tesla appears to be doing with their wall chargers. That will allow entrepreneurial home owners to set up chargers in their driveways and get recompensed for allowing others to use it.

They support RFID authentication. My neighbour has two stations to share with their tenant. They have different RFID to activate. Whenever they want, they can extract the sessions for the tenant, with the hourly tariff applied, for them to pay. I don't use RFID with mine, because it's just extra hazzle when I only use it myself.

There are some solutions to allow an app to activate charging with payment too, but the public charging infrastructure in Norway is fairly good, at least in my area, there's no need for it. I haven't looked into any details for it.

I have recently fitted 12 of these 22kW Easee commercial chargers at my workplace. They are amazing chargers. The app is great. But the load management sold it for me. It has drastically reduced the infrastructure cost of the installation. Now 12 chargers share the available 40kW of the supplied circuit . Which is plenty as employees are parked up for 8 to 12 hours per day.

@@samrawson8763 at the moment there are only 6 EV owners. So usage is recorded via the Easee portal with linked RFID's. We have 15 of these Easee chargers in our car park. Cleraly the guy isn't going to tell you the downsides for Robert's commercial question at 6;35, so we will. These are two main ones: 1. We use Easee's own web interface to take payment - it's terrible. The reporting function is poor and the whole thing is not very intuative. You can't even change the order of the chargers on the display graphic - so whatever order your electrician put them in, that's it. They look like a bingo game, nothing sequential. We've reported this to Easee - they say "get people to pay via an App" (we don't want to do this) and "you can't change the numbering via software - you're stuck with it". 2. Despite having all the chargers on Permanant Unlock on the Easee web interface - they still lock customer's cables in so that they can't take them out. Highly embarrassing, it can take several minutes of messing around with locking, unlocking, start the car, stop the car, cable out of car end first etc etc. Nightmare. We are now having our electrcian back to permantly unlock the chargers using hardware in the charger; not really what we want as customers (some of them anyway) will just drive off without paying.

As far as I know, there's no problem for third party system to communicate through the API, to adjust charging rate and turn on/off according to PV production. My energy company use the API to control my charging according to hourly tariff, and disable charging while most expensive. If I had PV, I would add them to that ecosystem, and they would balance charging vs. house and PV too.

I should say that the UK needs to follow Norway in having a right to charge law. It took 2 years and me working to replace our development's factor to just be allowed to ask the other owners for permission to lay a cable under what's known as the common ground. The old factor didn't want to know despite a process for voting being in our title deeds. A right to charge law would allow anyone who wants to get a charger installed the right to get one. This would massively help people in flats who have their own spaces.

If vehicles are designed to be charged from a type-2 station, there is no issue. If vehicles are designed to charge from standard 1-phase or 3-phase sockets, you need an adapter, or special cable. The station will not be able to control the charging rate for load balance, except on/off. They will however be able to read the power consumption for each station, to understand if it is done and possibly cycle through on a timer, until all vehicles are fully charged.

Looks a good product. The only thing I don't get and this goes for all charger brands.......where is the V2G (or at least vehicle to home) compatibility????. It just seems such a huge opportunity and yet charger and vehicle manufacturers are largely ignoring it. This unit stops working if your input goes above 253 volts unlike every other appliance in your house it does not have enough voltage tolerance this maybe the case with all EV chargers but this is the only one I have so cannot comment on others but DNO's have a difficult job trying to balance the voltage supplies for EV chargers, so I would suggest check your incoming voltage and it's stability before fitting these expensive devices this will determine when and how long they can be used as cheaper off peak tariffs may not fall into a EV charge points operating periods.

The EV with it's huge battery (much bigger than the Tesla home 14kwh) should be connected to the grid 24/7. The self parking EV should 'nuzzle' onto a wall plug at every parking spot and stabilise the grid and trade energy for money. For example in Australia 20million vehicles and 20million buildings and if all connected to the grid, and with rooftop solar pv, none of the fossil fueled power plants are needed. Fossil fueled is 600Gwh, max 24hrs in theory. This renewable above is 660Gwh daily. The total EV storage is 2,000Gwh. The existing power grid is perfect. Somebody do the maths, it's lonely out here. Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha 😆 And every EV battery can be fully topped up ready for the long drive. Daily drives are tiny 7kwh. Now add wind renewable energy and existing nuclear and a few big batteries or community batteries and commercial community batteries to provide rapid charging. The world will follow because it is cheap energy daily and most national grids do not need to be expanded. $TRILLIONS saved. Decades saved.

Bollocks. In a domestic setting (that’s “home” to you), sentient beings charge overnight, using off-peak tariffs that are about 20% of peak-time; so in a 4-hour session you can add 28kWk+, and this equates to >100 miles of range. Is your daily commute more than 100 miles..? If so, get the 3-phase version, and potentially triple those numbers. I’d say it’s a no-brainer, but that’s obviously expecting too much of some people.
