Here’s our first song of 2023! Having ended 2022 singing about bleakness and strikes, we wanted to throw out some positive vibes to get going this year, and couldn’t think of a better vehicle than the Beach Boys. The subject matter arises because we’ve finally bitten the bullet: all four kids now have electronic devices, as of this month. There have been many threats and confiscations already, but dealing with digital hassle is just a growing category of 21st century parenting if you are lucky enough to have access to them, so we figured we’d sing about it.
The original contagious track was of course written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, released in February 1964 from their album “Shut Down Volume 2” and is about a teenage girl who goes hot-rodding around California - or perhaps Utah - in a Ford Thunderbird (until it is confiscated). The early recording session for the track was cancelled by the band’s manager until rescheduled by Wilson. Our version of this was having to give up on our first attempt to make the video because everyone was shattered in the first week back at school. There was an irony about having to get people off their phones to make a song about getting people off their phones, but it turned out it was grumpy irony not funny irony. Happily, we picked ourselves up and had another shot this week that was more successful!
It’s taken a little while to turn this around because as usual we’ve had an end-of-year chat about our projects past and future. Every human in the house was up for writing and sharing more music, though sadly our computer has called time. It packed in unexpectedly last week, so once we’ve figured out how we can fix or replace it, there will be an out-takes reel from 2022 to follow soon.

Adapted Lyrics:
Well, she thought she won’t be barred
If she uses it as much as she can now
Seems she forgot all about the real world
While it was stuck in her hand now
And with the audio blasting
Refusing when she’s asked “put it down” now
And she’ll have fun fun fun
‘Til our Daddy takes her IPhone away
(Fun fun fun ‘til our Daddy takes her IPhone away)
Well, the girls keep landing
On these apps, that are so commonplace now
(They’re so commonplace now, they’re so commonplace)
They make a body that’s normal look
Like a little Barbie Doll waist now
(Oooh…A Barbie Doll waist now, a Barbie Doll waist)
Inflated eyes like in manga
And with make-up hiding all the face now
(All of the face now, you can’t see the face)
And they’ll have fun fun fun
‘Til our Daddy takes her IPhone away
(Fun fun fun ‘til our Daddy takes her IPhone away)
Well, we knew all along
That our parents used devices too now
(We’re desensitised now, we’re desensitised!)
They tried to limit what we see
They’ve been setting rules that we just abuse now!
(The measures they’ve tried now, the measures we’ve tried!)
But since they’re staring at their screens
Hardly notice what the HELL we do now!
(We’re preoccupied now, we’re preoccupied)
And we’ll have fun fun fun now that
Daddy took our IPhones away
(Fun fun fun now that Daddy took our IPhones away)
And we’ll have fun fun fun now that
Mummy took our IPhones away
(Fun fun fun now that Mummy took our IPhones away)
Fun fun now that we all put our IPhones away [repeat]
