We are Alex and Jess from @tents.and.timber and this is our trip log video of our spring canoe adventure to Algonquin Provincial Park.
This is Day 4 of our back country canoe trip in Algonquin Provincial Park. We launched our canoe from Cache Lake 4 days ago and have been hanging out on Pardee Lake for 2 nights and Head Lake for 1 night. The weather has been absolutely stunning for very early May with temperatures soaring to the 30 degree Celsius range.
We woke up to the sound of light rain on our tent, but by the time we got ourselves dressed within the confines of our small tent the rain had quit. Knowing that today was the last day of our trip and of our vacation, we were moving slowly to pack up our gear. We enjoyed a delicious cup of white hot chocolate while we sat down on the rocks over looking Head Lake. Taking our time with breakfast also allowed our tent a little more time to dry out before we packed it into our backpacks.
Climbing up and down the big hill on our campsite as we brought our gear down to the canoe had our legs burning and we were looking forward to resting our legs while we paddled across the lake. Once again we took our time getting to the first portage and paddled the perimeter of the lake as we trolled our fishing gear out behind our little boat. Unfortunately we had zero luck with the fishing once again, but that's why they call it fishing, not catching, right?
We paused for a break at our first and only portage of the day and enjoyed some fresh, cool lake water and a quick snack. This was our longest portage of the trip at 1640 meters, but we knew what to expect as we had already crossed it during the first leg of our adventure. However, we noticed something different this time across and until we got close we couldn't figure out what it was. Through the trees we could make out a large orange tent, a few feet off the trail and could only guess at why it was there. A little further down the trail were a few more smaller tents, tucked a ways into the forest. We began to wonder if they had something to do with the potential forest fire we had witnessed the night before.
As we hiked the portage we bumped into a few people heading in the opposite direction and they informed us that yes in fact there was a forest fire in the park yesterday and that there might have actually been three forest fires throughout the park. It was not long after this that we began to hear and then see helicopters flying back and forth over our heads in the direction of the fire we saw. It seemed so early for fires in the park to us, usually at this time of the year the ground is still so saturated in fresh snow melt that it is difficult to start a fire.
The portage had only become more beautiful from a few days ago when we crossed it as more flowers had sprung up in the warm weather. We made excellent time and reached the other end easily. Using the large dock at the end of the portage that meets Cache Lake we set our canoe back into the water for our final paddle back to our car. We soaked up the sun and leisurely paddled up to the small sandy beach at Access Point 8 where we loaded all of our gear into the car. With civilization back in sight we had our stomachs set on some big juicy hamburgers and made a stop at ‪@deerhurstresort6655‬ for a burger on their patio. It was the perfect way to finish our vacation as we reflected back on our little adventure.
