Same as what Tom Waits does in depicting America's forgotten and down-trodden in a lot of his songs. Makes the bleak, mundane and everyday glisten with appeal and romanticism and a cloud of sadness hanging over it all.

Pulp are a brilliant band. Jarvis Cocker writes lyrics that are like little kitchen sink dramas. Stories of the lives of regular British people told with a little bit of humor and a lot of sympathy. He's a tall gangly awkward regular bloke and we loved him for it. Disco 2000 and common people were their biggest hits but standouts include Babies, Underwear, Sorted for Es and Wizz, This is hardcore and something changed. Also Jarvis mooned Michael Jackson live on stage at the Brit awards show for which we loved him even more.

The album this song is from is called "Different Class" and there are some fantastic songs on there. I think you've already reacted to Common People (also from this album) One of my favourites from the album and (in my opinion) one of their darkest is "I Spy". That's got some lyrics that'll get you thinking! Or even "Pencil Skirt", which Jarvis Cocker has himself described as "a dirty little number" :-D

Much of the lyrical content of Jarvis Cocker songs is based on his own personal experiences. 'Deborah' in 'Disco 2000' actually existed, and their respective mothers had been friends since the maternity hospital. Jarvis has admitted though, that he and Deborah were actually born a few hours apart on the same day, but that "within an hour of each other" scanned much better as a lyric. (Poetic licence, anyone?)

'A Little Soul' is just gorgeous. Probably Jarvis's least arch, lyrically. Please give it a listen, even if it isn't a recorded reaction one. Your souls will be enriched, fittingly, given the song title.

One fact you might find fascinating - this is song from 1995. Pulp got tohether in 1978! That's 17 years between them starting playing and when he wrote these lyrics. I don't know how old he was when they started (touch of mystery) but right now I'm probably at that age when he wrote the lyrics... Even that I'm not from England or close to anything I could call common people, this song just hurts bulls eye. 17 years. They are still around even now, planning 2023 reunion, and "even if it was the only thing they are known for," they still get singalong of tens of thousands people, because "it's a good song"... 27 years later.

Coupling was miles better than Friends. Funnier and went far deeper into the topic of adult relationships. Were Friends is a superficial comedy with a story-telling background but always fishing for cheap thrill laughs, Coupling on the other hand is comedy with a deeper meaning that isn't afraid to let the real belly-laughs build up through an intricate story line. For anyone looking it up, I should note that there is a failed US version of Coupling as well. Avoid that at all cost.

Went digging around in my music brain and came up with 3 other bands who fit into this category of story telling, (I'm sure there's many more but these 3 came to mind nostalgically) Squeeze (70's, 80's) 'Cool For Cats' or 'Up The Junction' Our national treasure Jools Holland was in this band. The Streets (2004) 'Fit but you know it' and Plan B (2010) 'She Said'

I love this song - i love the nostalgia of growing up with folk and seeing how diffierent we all become. Yes, it says 'lets all meet up in the year 2000, wont it be strange when we're all fully grown' - which is funny because i was closer to being the 'baby' in the story than being 'fully grown' back then - i was 5 for most of 2000, 6 towards the end. But its still has the warm melancholy . . . A bittersweet, cynical nostalgia that Pulp do so well.

More Pulp! Do you remember the first time, underwear, sorted for E’s and whizz, babies. All great. Do it! Balls, I forgot, Mis-shapes is great too. C’mon, more Pulp, great music and even better lyrics.

If you want a Pulp song with a good story check out I Spy Edit: Oasis and Blur always got all the attention, but IMO Pulp was the best of the britpop bands.
