Omg... I've been wondering why no one has reacted to one of my favorite bands/singers ever! I drove from Orlando to Toronto to catch them live in the 90s. So frickin worth it! Check out E's and Whizz, Do you remember the first time, Just Like a Friend, Disco 2000... I mean, This is Hardcore and Different Class are both amazing albums. Orchestral! That's a horn you hear, not harmonica. Jarvis has some great solo stuff, too. I find "cunts are still running the world" in my head alot! Thank you!

It's such a good story, this song, this video. It's all about play-acting, walking through life and feeling nothing. And it channels such great parodies of imagery from classic Hollywood, a sardonic love letter to that slightly sleezy 1950's age of movie celluloid where men wore trench-coats and women had improbable bosoms. Fun reaction, and I can't quite believe you reacted to it so good on you buddy, and massive props to the one who requested it! I love Pulp, and it clearly had been too long since I heard this song.

Pulp are definitely underrated. I say that despite them becoming huge for one album and pretty big for the one this song came from. What I mean is, they had great songs before Common People, and, as with this one, they had great songs after. My favourite comes from their final album, We Love Life, and the song is Sunrise. Jarvis Cocker, the lead singer, became even more famous for walking on stage at an award show during Michael Jackson’s performance of Earth Song and mooned the audience. But take nothing away from their acutely well observed peep behind the curtains into the private lives of ordinary people. His lyrics are so on point (again off this album with “Seductive Barry”). He’s a genius and Pulp were a great vehicle for that genius. Saw them live once and they were brilliant too.

They are not underrated. They won multiple awards. This album went to number 1 as well. They are revered as icons of British pop.

@@damienx0x I guess what I’m saying is they still never got the credit other artists around the same time did. Their first few albums were largely slept on until His n Hers and then obviously Different Class. Critics loved them and they had a solid fan base but they didn’t get the exposure of say Blur or Oasis or Suede. Despite the success they did have, I still say they were underrated. As for awards they won 2 Ivor Novello and 1 Mercury Prize. The rest were magazine level awards. Not the pinnacle of recognition.

Nice to see a reaction to a lesser known Pulp song. This is Hardcore is a fantastic album, didn't really get it when I heard it first, but revisited it when I turned 30 and it made sense.

Also I think, without checking Google, that the strings and orchestral arrangements were produced by Anne Dudley, the creative force behind Art Of Noise. Another genius.

You should do the Bowie song “Fashion” done by Trent & Mariqueen Reznor (Atticus Ross, and some of Bowie’s Band mates). Great cover.

Pulp’ “common people” or “mile end,” are the more common tracks people are introduced to Pulp through. Definitely check those songs out if you haven’t already done so.

Saw them in Brixton shortly after this album came out. So intense! I'd seen them a couple of years prior after Different Class came out and that was joyous. By comparison Hardcore was onerous, and I appreciate it nonetheless. It was the hangover after the party, leading ever downwards to the morose mediocrity of Coldplay and Snow Patrol. I treasure that album but even now I hesitate to play it.
