Giggles. I use to do neon sign work. I been shocked about 3 different times all from a 15000 v transformer and it is a big wakeup call. I'm not afraid of the things ,but I would absolutely never intentionally touch a live one. Even a 5000 v bar sign transformer. Have also been hit or arc'd to my knuckle once from a focus lead on an old color tv while i was doing a color alignment/convergence set up. That was 5000 v at 15750hz that burned a hole in my knuckle and another at the tip of my finger . The in and out points. You think that transformer bites it's only 60hz , 15750hz is rf it burns a path as well as shocks.

@clifftheoklitou5847Ай бұрын
@combycat they are hard to find now because most signs are LED and not the old gas Florescent tubes, I've had mine for fifteen years now , and they are really cool to play with but dangerous.

Wrap a lamp cord's stripped end to one insulator and have it wrapped around a PVC pipe and taped to it, then touch it to the other side to draw arcs! Just make sure theres no webs for the arc to get ya! Also, if you hook both ends up to some wood that has salt water soaked in it, it will burn into the wood and make COOL patterns called lichtenberg figures which looks like tree branches. As for safety, these things are only 30 mA and 6500 volts on each side, so each side is 6500 volts at 15 mA each end! So technically, it won't kill, but you WILL cry. It makes any man cry, trust me. Don't go and use this as an excuse to touch it though! This looks like a vintage transformer from the 60's to 80's!! What a find!!

Btw, someone asked about the amperage. Most neon transformers are about .03a, a microwave transformer (which some use ) is .3a…. It only takes .001a to kill a human.

I was bench testing an 30,000 volt transformer, got careless and I lit up. The arc cuts and burns you at the same time...not a good day.

I've used 2 of thoes transformers to demonstrate how high voltage transmission lines work by conecting the output terminals from one transformer across to the other output of the other transformer with cotton string soaked in soapy salt water 12 ft apart . Pluged 120 input on one transformer into wall the 120 input i attached a wall outlet and plugged in an ocalating fan in . The fan works well. Repeated the demo with the 12ft strings only just with 120 on the one end and the fan on the other end of the strings and nothing the resistance is to much at the 120 voltage traveling through the string to make the fan work. Did this for a science fare in 9th grade and got 1st prize blue 🎀

Output is 15,000KV but once that arc crossed that possibly 2-3 inch spark gap on top the voltage ⚡ possibly doubled. I'm betting he'd had yelped out much louder as well as pissed himself!
@anthonyvolkman23383 жыл бұрын
@@johnnyrottensr.6549 It was very dangerous I'll say lol! Since it's a 15kv midpoint transformer it's a wander it didn't kill him. How we the voltage was clamped by the spark gap distance and it's current limited as well.

Exactly why so many buildings caught fire, neon signs were so dangerous if they weren't maintained. That's why they're pretty much banned for commercial exterior signage. 😒

This would be an absolutely retarded idea. 15 kV would almost instantly kill any cattle or even human. You'd probably be punished for involuntary manslaughter if anyone walked into it.

No if you put up a sign so no matter where you were at the sign could clearly be seen stating the whole liability and warning thing than youd be ok... except in california.. you cant fart in california without the epa bitching or surgeon general telling you your causing cancer...
@JulianA-tr6pt3 жыл бұрын
@@gayusschwulius8490 late response, but it's not only the voltage that kills, but rather a combination of Volts and current (as well as the circumstances of a shock). Electric fences can and do operate at up to 10kV, but at a low current. 15kV isn't much more. I'd rather touch an electric fence than a 2000V microwave transformer. That puny 2000V carries about a half an amp, which will absolutely kill a human or cause serious nerve and muscle damage as well as burns. Hell, I took a 500V DC shock once and had a sharp nerve pain when I'd pull my arm behind me (as to put a jacket on) for over a year.

@OGGarrettsGarage4 жыл бұрын
I'll have to do an experiment!
@squidward7524 жыл бұрын
@@kingkendrik3497 No. The only factor for how fast it raises is how hot the arc is. The Jacobs ladder works by having an arc start at the bottom, and the heat makes it rise up in the air. The arc breaks at the top because it cannot stretch any more, and because the bottom is closer than the top, it resets to the bottom. wrapping copper wire around more copper does absolutely nothing!

Look up the names Strickfadden, Wysock and Aurandt. Strickfadden was my Godfather, Aurandt was my dad and Wysock was my "Uncle". Ken Strickfadden was the man who created the laboratory sets for the original Frankenstein movies and under the supervision of my dad and "Uncle" Bill, lent the same equipment out for Mel Brook's classic, Young Frankenstein. Trust me when I say that your careless behavior around high voltage parlor tricks like the Jacob's Ladder you've shown here, can and will get people killed if they're stupid enough to behave like you did. Yes, it may be high voltage/low amperage but to even simulate the touching of the coronal arc is done in poor taste. The arc can still kill a grown adult if he's not using proper shielding and to add water within 20 feet of the apparatus is just begging for disaster. I hope you have the common sense to take this down before you do find yourself a defendant in a "Wrongful Death" case.
