About this Türkiye 100th anniversary vlog:
In this episode, I made it to İstanbul, Türkiye for Turkey Republic Day 2023. I documented the events of this extrodinary day as a form of news reporting. I had these October 29, 2023 events circled on my calendar for a while as it is the Republic of Turkey centennial. As it was my first time in Istanbul, I hadn’t seen any of the sights yet and had a lot to see.
İstanbul was full of celebrations. I got to see Turkish flags and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk tributes everywhere. I even got to an MFÖ concert. I will add that I do not own any of the music played at the concert and am including it as fair use to document the events of the day. This Turkish history celebration was a blast! Some of the places that I go to in this travel vlog include:
- İstikal Avenue
- Beyoğlu
- Galata Tower
- Taksim Square
- Bağdat Avenue
- Maltepe Sahil Park
- Üsküdar station
About the 100th anniversary of Türkiye:
The 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye, celebrated in 2023, marked a significant milestone in the nation's history. Commemorating a century since its foundation by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the country engaged in various nationwide events and festivities. This centennial celebration was an opportunity for reflection on Turkey's transformation from the remnants of the Ottoman Empire to a modern, secular republic. Highlighting Atatürk's visionary reforms, from adopting the Latin alphabet to advancing women's rights, the anniversary was a tribute to the nation's resilience, progress, and unity. Furthermore, it symbolized Turkey's aspirations for the future, emphasizing its role as a bridge between East and West and its ongoing commitment to peace and development. The day was filled with cultural exhibitions, parades, and performances, reflecting the rich tapestry of Turkey's heritage and its hope for a prosperous future.
About the Republic of Türkiye:
The Republic of Türkiye, commonly known as Turkey, was officially proclaimed on October 29, 1923, with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as its first president. Emerging from the remnants of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, Atatürk introduced sweeping reforms to modernize the country. These changes spanned from replacing the Arabic script with the Latin alphabet to the secularization of the state, separating religion from politics.
Atatürk's leadership prioritized education, women's rights, and industrialization, helping to steer Turkey toward becoming a progressive nation. After he died in 1938, Turkey maintained its neutral stance in World War II but later joined NATO in 1952, aligning with the West during the Cold War era.
The second half of the 20th century saw multiple military coups, reflecting the tensions between secular and religious factions. Turkey also experienced significant economic growth, but this was accompanied by periods of inflation and political instability.
In the 21st century, Turkey has been at the crossroads of geopolitical challenges, especially with its strategic position in the Middle East. Turkey remains a pivotal country, balancing its rich history with its aspirations for the future.

You know what makes me real emotional about this? We've been facing so many problems as a nation, I mean so many. It's not something that can be easily defined as "economic turmoil" or things like that, that would be an understatement. Especially in the last 10 years, this nation suffered from a lot of things: terror, economic crisis, societal problems, violence... We've lost our reputation in the world arena, we've somehow become the unwanted people and nation in Europe or pretty much anywhere in the world besides some exceptions. The people of Turkish Republic have been going through a process of deep insecurity, facing with unimaginable uncertainty regarding their future and their place in the world. We've been trying to convince others that we are not bad, we are not a place where you would feel unsafe, and you know what, it is so freaking frustrating. But besides all these, all these negativity surrounding us for almost a decade now, what you see in this video is also real. As the citiziens of Republic of Türkiye, we may curse at each other, we may dislike each other, we may fight and we may hurt each other while trying to cope with all our problems. But when it comes to our nation, our Republic, we are united. We become one, we celebrate what we share altogether, with pride. We forget what makes our lives dark and unbearable, but we remember the light that we have always followed, which is still there, no matter what. And it is not something that only some of us are aware and enjoy, but even though most of us do not know about it, it's something every Turkish citizen knows deep down. So what you see in this video, is not merely a big group of people coming together, watching a concert and waving flags. It's much more than that, it's what loyalty exactly means, what a feeling of belonging is. It's what despite everything, what keeps us here, alive, what keeps us going, what gives meaning to our lives. There are so many things I dislike and disapprove about my country, actually not about my country but the way things are handled and executed here. But I'm still proud. I've been to 28 countries around the world, lived in some of them for long time. And I know wherever I go, there are certainly things that I would not be able to find, the things that made me "me", the things that this nation and these people taught me and inspired me about, the things that we should not take for granted and feel proudly confident about. I love my people, I love my country.

We, the Turks, do not celebrate the Independence Day, but the secular democratic Republic founded and left by Atatürk, which is his unique legacy, and the honorable struggle he waged against the imperialist colonialists by expelling them from these lands. As the Turkish Nation, we have never been under anyone's domination in history and we will never do so. Also thank you for your kind video recording.

Türkiye wasnt founded as neither a secular nor democrat state in 1923, Islam is defined as a state religion in the both 1921 and 1924 constitutions untill 1928 its halted, secularism came into constitution in 1937! Well democracy came after the WW2 in 1946 with Demokrat Parti, which later then win the elections in 1950. People simply celebrating independent republic which is earned by blood.

Islam is defined in the constitutions because of black proganda which was done by British empire to stop resisstance of Turkish nations so it was a politic move also yes an islamic country can become secular country with other people from other religions and simply Atatürk provided this . @@oguzhanozalp3817

whole idea of democratic and independent republic was born in 29th of october 1923. no one can expect a revolution that big could be quick after the collapse of 600 years old caliphate monarchy. took some time but it happened. this was the first step. people do celebrate it because of secularism and democracy. before 1923, we were just subjects of a bloodline. after that day we became induviduals. equals by the law. same republic granted rights to women before many western countries etc. it doesn't matter if it was granted later, the source is the republic.@@oguzhanozalp3817
@kazuhiramiller7491
@kazuhiramiller7491 6 ай бұрын
@@oguzhanozalp3817 It is completely irrelevant, Atatürk already mapped out on which ideals the Turkish Republic would go on long before 1923. He did not implement some reforms instantly because there was too much reactionary backlash. You are noone to speak on behalf of millions of people including me who explicitly celebrate the revolutionary reforms brought forward by Atatürk and disregard them as "they're just simply celebrating independence". These reforms were an INTEGRAL part of the republic, and their dismantling started when """"democracy"""" came in 1950 under the same reactionaries that opposed the very foundation of the republic at the start. And for 70 years they have failed to bring down what Atatürk brought in just 10 years.

I am glad we are not an oil-rich country, otherwise the money thirsty politicians of the west would try to make us unstable, too. I live in the States and planned my annual vacation to be in Türkiye on October 29th and November 10th. I was in between Uskudar and Kuzguncuk. Yes, it was a total madness. Because of the crowd, the cell phones did not work. Our view for the foreworks was not better than yours. But after all, it was all worth it. I am so glad to witness all on my lifetime. I am sad but my stay is temporary so i'm gonna pay off when i start to give lectures to my engineering students in my country. One thing about us: we are proud of our country and we try to do our best to sustain our freedom and indipendency and we try to safe our country from different threats every once in a while. This is literally a daily conversation in every meal table between everyone no matter where you are. Even in cafes, in universities and in our family conversations 😂 so i love us for that.

My advice to Turks is to never lose their love for their country. It's the only country who ever accept them as Turks, nowhere else. The only countries that would "accept" them are now struggling to accept themselves (like the US, where I've grown up). Find your own way of life, love your neighbors in the region, and don't ever believe you must live under the shadows of the West. The world is changing in a way that simply will not be true.

actually 29 october is the one of least important until 2018 when the presidental system changed and even if it's late some people realised country goes to very unknown important days and festivals; 10. november, 30 august, ramadan/sacrifice eid ( 23. april and 19. may; still important but not celebrated like 20 years ago)
@thehurricanegod
@thehurricanegod 6 ай бұрын
@@huseyinmehmetaltun2046 It is not clear what you are talking about, holidays such as Ramadan are religious holidays, you cannot compare them with national holidays. How much more important should October 29 be, the year in which the independence and republic was established? October 29 is the most important holiday in Turkey, there is no need to say much.
