We can also replace x by 1−x, f((1−x)^2+(1−x)+3)+2f((1−x)^2−3(1−x)+5)=6(1−x)^2−10(1−x)+17 f(x^2−3x+5)+2f(x^2+x+3)=6x^2−2x+13 Solving with f(x^2+x+3)+2f(x^2−3x+5)=6x^2−10x+17, we have f(x^2+x+3)=2x^2+2x+3. So f(x)=2x−3. Taking ax+b is not very correct.
