Desi had the same serious addictions when he married Edie, his second wife, but she did not work or have any career. I guess her job was taking care of Desi. He was working very little at that time and later had sold his shares in Desilu. Because of his drinking, Desi was making bad decisions, and the company was losing money. He had to sell his shares to Lucille. So she took over as head of Desilu - and was acting in and producing The Lucy Show. Desi had asked Lucy to make the show, since the company was losing money; so in the first year or two he was the producer, but left that role. It was said, he could not stand seeing Gary Morton do the warm ups as he once did. (That was a rumor not sure if it is true).

@LJ-ht4zs5 ай бұрын
Lucy always gave Desi credit. However, there is a continual dispute who did what vis a vis putting the I Love Lucy Show together. Originally, Jess Oppenheimer was the executive producer, not Desi. Also, the writers Jess O, Madeline Pugh, and Bob Carroll Jr all knew Lucy from the radio show, "My Favorite Husband". Also, Lucy knew Karl Freund the cinematographer from movies she appeared in. Also, William Frawley, who was also in films, called Lucy about being on the show and she referred him to Desi. Marc Daniels, the original director of I Love Lucy was the one who spotted Vivian Vance, and had Desi come to watch her in a play and all agreed she was the one to play Ethel. Also, Marc Daniels the first director of I Love Lucy, according to his son, told everyone that Lucille Ball was the greatest actor he ever directed and he directed people like Paul Newman, Sallie Fields, Julie Harris, Laurence Olivier. (Orson Welles who appeared on one of the I Love Lucy shows, said similarly that she was one of the greatest actors of the 20th century). So in that respect 3 people really made I Love Lucy: Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz and Jess Oppenheimer.

Desi, with all his gifts, was an addict: sex, booze, and gambling. His second wife Edith almost divorced him too. Any one of these addictions would be almost impossible to live with - but all 3 - don't know how Lucy and Edie made it through the many years they were married.
@Mark-yy2py5 ай бұрын
@@LJ-ht4zs he allowed his inner demons to control his life. Sad.
@retroguy94945 ай бұрын
@@LJ-ht4zs Well, Lucy didn't mind the gambling as much as she did the drinking and womanizing. That's what really got to her. With the womanizing, Desi always claimed it was a cultural difference. That men in the Latin culture always have women on the side for sex but are devoted to and love their wives. Even Desi's father slept around. But Lucy, who was from a very old American protestant family and had pioneer stock in her believed in monogamy. As for the gambling, she used to actually go with Desi to the racetrack at Delmar.
@LJ-ht4zs5 ай бұрын
@@retroguy9494 Another reason why Lucy did not mind Desi's gambling - they divided their finances early on. He was gambling with his own money - not with hers. His second wife Edith did not have her own finances and had a great problem with his gambling. Edie knew Lucy and Desi when they were both married; in fact, Lucy and Edie used to play cards together. However, after the divorce Desi played around a lot with other women, (acc to his daughter Lucie) then apparently went with Edie - though she was still married. Her husband hired a detective and had evidence of her adultery with Desi. I think she took quite a financial hit in the divorce. Her husband was financially well off. So Desi's gambling, which like everything else he did, was excessive and she was on edge, and almost divorced him for all the addictions.
