The genius of Johnny Carson is that he let his guests take center stage. It wasn't about him, the focus was on the person sitting in that seat. He handled her quips gracefully, and kept the conversation flowing. He was, and remains, the undisputed master of late night. Lucy's banter with him seems based on years of friendship between two comedians. But we're also looking at an aging Lucy - less filters, blunt answers. Still, she is a beloved legend, as is Johnny. Forever in our hearts! ❤

Now, the industry is so different. Lucy was not only an actress, she was the head of her own film studio after Dezi left it to her. She was "The Boss". She didn't stop being The Boss when she came to Johnny's show. She knew the industry better than anyone. She was intelligent, funny, kind, and tough as nails. She had to be.

Desi did not "leave it to her". He asked her to buy him out - at that time the stocks were down and losing money. She bought him out for 2.5 million (fair price for the deal). Several years later the stock value was rising and Paramount bought Desilu for 17 mllion, Lucy netted 10 million. All and all Desi had 20 million at the end of his life and Lucy had 40 million. I think the major difference was that Desi gambled a lot. He left his money to his two children; 250 thousand to his mother, who lived two years beyond him. Lucy's money was divided up between her two children and her husband Gary Morton (married almost 30 years).

@Kathryn Molesa I love Lucy & Desi & wished they could have stayed together. If you google, you will see that their son had a child, I think, when he was 15. We will never know what arrangements were made at that time (I was not alive then), but in finding this out recently, I was surprised. They hid it well. That baby daughter grew up to have challenging experiences & is now a mother herself. That young daughter which would be Desi Jr's. granddaughter/Desiree is now being photographed & compared to Lucille Ball as Lucy was a model & iconic beauty. It appears that Desi Jr. at some point got in touch with his daughter. No family is perfect & there are a great deal of things that we never really know about anyone....which is not to say that they are or are not wonderful adults...just that no family is picture perfect or completely wonderful as we are all imperfect. ---------"Daughter at 15 Desi Arnaz Jr. was a problematic boy. His celebrity parents lived their own life, and despite being treated “like a real son” on a TV show, the boy experienced little attention. Music and drugs played an integral part in his teenage life. Under the influence of the trendy dangers and due to the lack of attention, Desi Arnaz Jr. became a father to his daughter, Julia, at 15. He was immediately limited from his girlfriend, and it wasn’t until 1990 when he officially assured via the DNA test that Julia was his daughter." Desi Arnaz Jr. in his own words/interview: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHyymqGGh9agbKs My thoughts: Life is challenging for everyone, but sometimes we all become tooooo self-absorbed. I always wonder why someone who has every opportunity, who never has to worry about money, never has to worry about health insurance or clothes, food, paying bills, paying for college or paying for anything...doesn't help others. Think about helping others & making a difference for others & in turn yourself by helping others. cyndy rob I don't think 'nice' is the right word for Lucy. As a producer - and a woman- in the 1960s and 1970s she had to be tough. And so she was. Toughness in a woman then bred no real friendships and apart from Vivian Vance and perhaps a couple of others within the industry, these were thin on the ground. Talented, reliable, honest, a good mother yes; but not 'nice'.

@@foofookachoo1136 It pains me to say it because I was once a huge Lucy fan, but I'm afraid you are correct. I even went to Lucy's memorial mass years ago in Beverly Hills. Lucie Arnaz came in with Carol Burnett and went into the family pew just in front of me. Since that time, though, I have read many negative accounts of Lucille Ball. Several years ago, a memoir came out written by a man who had been Lucille Ball's personal assistant for several years. In it, he gives an account of how Desi Jr. at dinner one night was excited about telling his mother about a church he had found and joined because it was helping him very much with his drug problem. Lucy's personal assistant said he felt very bad for Desi Jr. because his mother wasn't at all interested in hearing about it and changed the subject. Another time, Lucie Arnaz on a talk show made the comment that she found it difficult to understand how someone (meaning her mother) could so often talk about how badly she wanted children and how many years she had waited to have them and then, after having two, could so easily leave them with hired help and go back to work. This was an honest comment by Lucie Arnaz, yet she was criticized for making it. I cannot help but notice that Lucie Arnaz did not then do to her own children by repeating what she had so disliked her mother having done to her and to her brother. She gave up her career to stay home with her children. She said she wanted to be home with them not just physically, but emotionally as well. One has to respect her very much for this. I certainly do.

There was a lot of creepy stuff going on anytime when people have power and money. But look at today's Hollywood. You do not hear one really speak of morals. Only virtual signaling. DiCaprio crying about Climate change but look how he leads his life. So yes back then had creeps and sickos but there were a few who did try to instill some values in their kids. Many people don't remember that Desilu, la production company started by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, her husband back then, produced series like "The Untouchables, Mission Impossible, and Star Trek. Also Desi Arnaz started the tecnique of filming sitcoms with 3 cameras on a sound stage in front of live audiences. The filming permitted the beginning of what we know as reruns, allowing Desilu Studios a hefty profit. So Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were not only successful sitcom actors, but were two of the most important developers of modern television. And who didn´t grow up watching reruns of "I Love Lucy"? It was an unforgetable part of my childhood. Great lady.

I remember as a child, about 6 yrs old being on the walk of stars with my family and I walked into Lucy. I don’t remember much of my childhood but I remember looking up at her 🤩 she was looking down at me with a big smile as I was in disbelief looking up at her. She had what I called sparkling eyes. It was as if I was looking at an angel. I knew who she was. I watched I love Lucy and would imitate her and laugh so much. I always loved Lucy and always will 💗🥰🙏

I liked when she told Johnny Carson - "Dont touch me"! She certainly was no ass-kisser like most of his guests were. Her whole demeanor is of someone who knows who she is.

Love her...Years of great entertainment and laughs...In 80s lived near USC student in Hollywood Hills.. He was communications major.. Lucy was one of his professors. He loved her and learned so much from Lucy. Johnny Carson was so outstanding! Thanks Johnny, Ed and Lucy for many years of high quality fun.
