I have a cousin who is a genius and he is so socially awkward his mom does everything for him like he’s a child, he’s 30 years old and could’ve gone to any school he wanted, but was too afraid to leave his mom. He became a professor at the school. He went to, but I think got fired because he didn’t really like going to work. He can’t even cut his own nails. His sister is also very smart and still lives at home with Mom because Mom didn’t prepare them for the real world.

@Robert De Pesci agree... and i think because when kid geniuses happen they usually lose their childhood when their parents allow them to skip grades and the child completely misses out on a very important part of growing as a human being which is social development.

When graduating high school is a big deal for most Americans, of course, they'll downplay Clovis' achievements. It's like shoving onto their faces what he has accomplished.
@ajtam05

Take his race out of the equation. He's just a smart kid and (whether unknowingly, willingly or forcefully) he is disciplined. All good qualities/traits! Now as a human going through this world and finding himself...I hope he has a breadth of experiences that provide him insight into his existence & helps him cultivate his own personality & social skills. On that note...the stereotype of being Asian + nerd isn't the most appealing (usually implying they're not socially skilled)...but he can be an Asian, a nerd, and socially apt! THAT would still be a well-rounded American human. :)

Nahhh, not all Asians maybe Indians but here, it’s always the Chinese folks lol. Even the Chinese here in PH are crazy academic threats from secondary school competitions to top universities, the Chinese or half Chinese kids are automatically considered the genius bunch. They are also known here to dominate mathematics lol even the business tycoons here are of Chinese ancestry (Sy family of SM Supermalls and the owner of Jollibee Food Corp).

Can I just say that 4 of the five degrees are humanities or arts related? I think that’s refreshing. Since one of them was math/science I’m sure he can function across multiple disciplines but honestly I was expecting all the majors to be stem related. To me he deserves more credit for choosing what interests him. It’s an unusual accomplishment. Great discussion guys. I think Clovis is fine.

Honestly. A lot of kids like this end up hating it. Kids raised as bodybuilders ending up fat, working to get into college and realizing you don’t care about it. It’s just a thing that happens. At this point in time we can’t do anything but hope that he’s spared from that. I hope little bro has a good life and doesn’t hurt himself trying so hard.

I am a believer in maximizing someone's potential. If the kid had the aptitude to undergo all that at his age, God bless him. I don't think it's necessarily fair to knock the fact that the degrees were associate's or were conferred at community college. The kid is 12 and juggling a heavy courseload when he should be in a middle school classroom. It's impressive for someone his age and graduating with 5 degrees in such a short time.

Associate Arts degree in history and art isn't going to make Clovis more marketable in the job market but the Social Science, Math and Science Associate Arts degree will help. The self development degree usually covers sports, physical fitness, diet/nutrition, some emotional intelligence topic, and sex education - which would prepare Clovis to be more emotionally intelligent than most of his peers.

When kid geniuses happen they usually lose their childhood when their parents allow them to skip grades like this. The child completely misses out on a very important part of growing as a human being which is social development. Also they miss out on making friends.... there is no one who is in college who wants to hang out with a CHILD after class or on the weekends regardless of the fact that kid has a higher IQ. It is extremely unfair for parents to do this if they have a child prodigy. A kid needs to be a kid. They have the whole rest of their life to be an adult.

Actually no. He is in my son's Civil Air Patrol Squadron and he is a pretty social kid who makes a lot of friends. He is also into basketball and archery. Clovis was home schooled before taking College course and therefore did not take any Advanced Placement courses because he never went to High Schools with Advanced Placement which is how GPA scores are computed over 4.0. USA academic HS are designed to create athlete-scholar but Chinese academia HS is designed for a pure scholar. This academia cultural different expectation/norm is what triggers many non-Asian comments doubting Clovis is not socially adapted. Many US leaders/Presidents have military background and are not child prodigies.

Why is his happiness or pursuits your business? Happy with your career? Happiness helps you get your career, but your career isn't about making you happy, it's about longevity, usefulness, having a roof over your head, having an impact maybe. Maybe he's following his parents' pursuits blindly, maybe he believes this'll make him happy when it won't, or maybe he's simply not an imbecile like others, and likes to learn just to learn, or wants the classroom insight for what he plans in the future, maybe it'll benefit him somehow, maybe it's what he really wants and is time managing this with having personal interests, a life and future goals. The jealousy for a fucking 12 year old by grown adults is real.

Only Idiots get degrees just to get degrees who should've just stayed in blue collar jobs, while everyone else enrolls in a program with a specific career and job market in mind and being realistic about expectations, and spend their time in college being informed and preparing for that.
