That is true but depends on where you are living. I come from a city where there is my countries biggest centre for mentally and bodily handicapped people and people with psychiological problems. Therefore people are so used to people having problems or acting "not normal" that they are cool and nice about it. But I often was and am so angry when I saw/ see how it was/ is elsewhere. I had a friend who had a cochlear implant and could not hear good. That was when I lived ca. 150 km away from my hometown. So often people were so unfriendly towards my friend because they did not get that she could not hear them. Only when I then made clear that she could not hear them, these people were sometimes a tad nicer. I wasn't used to such behaviour from my hometown. But sadly it seems to be very normal. 😑 it is sad. Every being should be treated with respect. 😊

Gray Wings Studios of course they are “doing their jobs” that’s why the doctor had to instruct the caregiver to check the residents feet once in awhile. This persons feet were in horrible shape, only because no one was checking them. If these residents are able to care for themselves they would not be in a care facility. I agree let them be as independent as possible but the caregivers failed this resident in foot care. If you don’t see that I hope your not a caregiver

I work in a group home and nail fungus is rampant especially with senior citizens. I am not a doctor or a nurse but am expected to cut these kinds of nails. Not only am I not trained to do so, the clients refuse most of the time, which is their right. After watching the Toe Bro, I contacted a state agency to make a formal complaint on this type of neglect. Lots of feathers were ruffled but they now see a podiatrist for toe nail trims. I love caretaking the seniors but some things are better left to the professionals. The Toe Bro has made life better for some lucky people he hasn't even seen.

I don't blame her, specifically, but I do blame the facility. They should be including foot checks regularly. They are a group home for vulnerable adults. If they were able to live independently, they wouldn't be in the facility. The facility dropped the ball; she admitted such when she said they knew he was supposed to go in for foot care, but his last appt. was canceled and then they "forgot." That's bad care. This situation should be reported as neglect of a vulnerable adult. The facility should be held responsible. They're lucky it wasn't worse for this gentleman.

I am really glad this caregiver brought this gentleman in. However let me say from the position of a Masters degree in Gerontology and 30 plus years working with the elderly and disabled that ANY group home manager should be including foot care in each persons overall care plan. No matter how independent someone is if they live in a group home they are not that independent. If they were they would be living on their own. Even individuals living on their own need reminding and often times physical assistance caring for their feet. It is obvious from how many elderly patients you see who have completely ignored their feet. I am so thankful that you are out there taking care of all these individuals who need foot care. I don’t know if you really do any advertising but you could create a flyer talking about elderly foot care and send it out to all the group homes, independent living facilities and long term care facilities to help them remember this important foot care and also let them know you are the Man to see for the best foot care in Canada. If you need a PR person just let me know. LOL 💖

Most of us ignore whatever doesn't hurt today. Think about it-- even people who are still relatively young and who are still perfectly capable of bending over and reaching their feet AND seeing what's there-- won't bother, just because after all, if nothing hurts, everything must be okay, right? Ask any dentist or a dental hygienist about the horror shows they see on a daily basis in people's mouths-- exact same thing. And anyone who thinks they can be "healthy" with a mouthful of periodontal disease and rotten teeth need to have a serious talk with themselves, even if they aren't in pain. I presume feet fall into that category too-- out of sight, out of mind. Until it hurts. Routine checks of feet? That'd be nice. But how about routine dental care too? Not gonna happen-- no one wants to pay for it.

As a former Nurse who trained and worked with people with Learning Difficulties, I find that listening to Michael's Carer made me believe she was more interested in her own feet than hearing the advice or Johnathan . In addition, she barely spoke to Michael and he conversation was mainly with Johnathan too. I hope the Manager of the Home gets to see this and both heeds Johnathan's advice about regular foot checks and also has a word with the Staff about including the Client in the conversation. Things have come a long way with the care of people who have learning difficulties, but it's plain to see, they still have a long way to go ! Hey Toe Bro, have you ever thought about going to a care/group home and looking the residents' feet and treating them then and there? Maybe some just can't get to you, or will be encouraged if they see their fellow residents use your services. I used to work in a care home and a chiropodist used to come in every 2 or 3 months. She got paid and the residents had their toes seen to, win win!

I have an idea he's working 40+ hours in his own office and has no time available to go around to nursing homes. It's all in practice focus-- some podiatrists or chiropodists want a nursing home practice, others would rather have an independent office and have patients come to them, and some mix the two. With the exposure Jonathan is getting through this channel, somehow I doubt he has much free time anymore.

What an AMAZING CARE WORKER & FOOT DR.
@JJ-go5sv5 жыл бұрын
I honestly didn't read all of the comments, but i do the exact same work as this caregiver. In my entire agency whether you are independent enough to shower and change yourself or not it is absolutely mandatory that you always go to a podiatrist. If we were to not make an appointment like that for that long, the state would come and kick our ass for it. Sometimes we can't even reschedule an appointment a couple days later if it will be considered "out of compliance." Listen, I'm glad she took it upon herself to get Michael the help he needed, of course. One of the biggest parts of our job is to advocate for our clients for what is in their best interests. I'm just saying that house manager, agency and state all need to be looked at because even with us if the manager didn't catch it, then the agency didn't catch it in the audit, the state goes through everything with a fine tooth comb and will SURELY find it in their once or twice a year audit. Once the state gets it, you're in trouble. Anyway, i'm glad Michael is ok, but depending on how the agency handled it, in my field this is considered neglect and the entire house staff was probably written up for it with a house retraining too.

@lisapace96044 жыл бұрын
You are so respectful and make all your clients feel at ease and educated. I’m thinking, you may have to have a field trip to the home to educate everyone and get the process going. You would have the authority for them to implement a process.

I worked in a nursing home. I wish they gave caregivers more training in nail care and better tools to do it with. The most training I had during my caregiving class was pretending to trim another student's nails, not even actually trimming nails. A lot of the residents at the nursing home had very thick or damaged toenails, and it was hard to know how to trim the nails without causing pain, cutting too much of the nail, or nicking the skin, but podiatrist visits were few and far between.

This is why I always examine my gramps for issues and ask if he’s being treated well when I visit him! Caregivers are spread so thin that they sometimes just miss the simple things like feet. Feet are important but they’ll just gloss over feet. I love how he wiggles his toes. I do that in the chair too.

Could you send a letter to his home where he lives? She seems more conserned with her own feet than yours. As a mother that will face having her child in a group home I completely agree with you they should be checking them head to toe as parents don’t last forever and some don’t have siblings
@steppy37365 жыл бұрын
I thought it would be a good idea if Jonathan contacted the director of the home. I'm sure *some* in the home are capable of understanding to tell someone if their feet hurt. For the others, it would be great if the director was aware of the seriousness of the problem and work something out. Maybe the home has a field trip to Jonathan's office? Or Jonathan visits their home?

I agree, if she had questions she should have booked an appointment on her own time. As someone who has worked with intellectually disabled people I will say that the higher functioning people value independence and might not want anyone inspecting them, even family. We always watched to see if there were any signs like limping or complaining about feet.
@loniamuckle84475 жыл бұрын
At the beginning, she said that she gave him her appointment. So that might be an explanation.

Gillian Harrison she brought him in though? Also if he thought this man was in serious danger and being neglected he would put disclaimers about the caregivers OR post this. Such an ignorant comment.
